I think spatial audio is great if well mixed. One of the problems with Dolby Atmos is mixing to exploit Atmos as a gimmick with exaggerated effects. When done well it is excellent.

I agree, these formats really don't work good for just audio only applications. Personally I think the best use for both would be in VR. Imagine a spatial audio atmos setup with a concert in VR, it would be like you're actually there. My home theater room is also my VR play space and I'm still trying to figure out how I can get the spatial effect to work with my surround sound setup while I'm in VR, I think probably the apple solution is the only way to get it done right now.

I think spatial audio gets a LOT better when we can add head tracking. Like on the Audeze Mobius, you can anchor a point in front of you, and the 3D audio tracks your head position. It helps sell the illusion of surround a LOT better, but we'll need a LOT more attention from music producers to mix specifically for spatial for it to unseat a REALLY good stereo mix.

Very well balanced review on Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio. Thank you for that. For me it is all about what the format does for music creation. It is amazing to see when we play reference songs to artists at the studio that they immediately light up and start saying "oh, I can do this, and that, and bring that sound there, and . . . and . . ." and they are genuinely excited because they realize that the format transcends the inherent limitations of stereo. Being object-based and speaker agnostic the tech has nothing to do with older very limited in scope versions of multichannel audio that did not become the norm, and will only get better as the algorithms get better, and as both engineers and artists get more comfortable creating, for me--and of course I am biased--this is a new era of both creating and experiencing music in a whole different way, dare I say as or even more significant than mono to stereo.
@PAINFULLYHONESTTECH
@PAINFULLYHONESTTECH Год назад
Here’s the rub: it’s cool and fun for engineers, but if no one can hear it it won’t matter. And it’s a very few-minuscule-number of people who will ever have the means to reproduce an Atmos signal.
@womplestilskin
@womplestilskin Год назад
@@PAINFULLYHONESTTECH majority of music is heard on earphones. Atmos for earphones treats the multi channel audio elements to various transfer functions that psychoacoustic research says listeners hear as localized soundstage elements. Is it the same a full 12 channel setup, no. But it's certainly a buttload of people who are able to hear multi-channel Atmos on earphones. I agree with the decades of HRTF research, it's pretty solid. But there will be outliers that the models don't work for I imagine.

For me it has completely changed the way I listen to music. I agree with headphones statement, as its weird and isnt quite right. However through a dedicated Atmos amp with 7.1 etc plus an Apple TV 4K then its mind blowing and send shivers up your spine. I use a Denon X2800H, for dedicated music and use the Sonos Arc, sub etc for TV, and sometimes for Atmos. The difference is night and day between the Arc and the Denon, as the separation is far better on the Denon - For obvious reasons. I would check this out, then im 100% sure you will change your mind lol

Just a correction, a bit of wrong info about Spatial Audio - it’s not only that things stays fixed in space as you move your head around, but mostly for adding 3D stereo imaging. A very cool thing with the new iOS is that you can add Spatial Audio to all your music, say for instance Tidal HiFi, and it sounds way way better than normal stereo. If you walk around with it, the singer mostly stays fixed in front of you, if it fu*ks up a bit it will correct the imaging within 5 seconds so the singer moves in front of you. I agree some of the Dolby Atmos music is mixed weird, normal stereo tracks with the Spatial Audio filter added is often way better. Edit, just saw they added a function where you can set the “Spatialize Stereo” to either Fixed or Head Tracking. Very cool.

It should stay exactly where it was in the virtual soundstage just like the VR. I think your right is has no future for music only. Dolby Atmos mixes should be mixed again up from start to get the most of it. I doubt if all producers and record companies are willing to spend the extra money

Dolby atmos with headphones….very lame, however if you have an apple tv hooked up to a Dolby atmos 7.2.4 home theater setup like I do, GAME CHANGER. Apple TV supports Dolby atmos through Apple Music and my receiver reads spatial audio tracks on Apple Music as Dolby atmos. The sound is INCREDIBLE. True surround sound with the setup. Center channel is only vocals with all the audio coming through surround and overhead speakers. Bohemian rhapsody gives me chills every time. Headphones not worth a switch but if you have a Dolby atmos enabled home theater set up, game changing, friends always find it mind blowing. Worth it for that reason and that reason alone

I tried Dolby Atmos for the first week when it came out. Didn’t impress me at all. Lessened the artists’ voices and made background instruments louder. I’ve since turned it off and don’t anticipate turning it back on. I did enjoy spatial audio, though, in terms of watching podcasts or movies on my device with AirPods Max, but from a practicality sense I think stereo would be preferred most of the time. I’ll end with this: I hope that Bluetooth technology one day evolves and is able to transfer true high-resolution lossless audio.

atmos an spatial audio mixes are very variable. in movies it kind of makes sense but for audio people are still learning the ropes. the tools have only just become available for the home studio and people just don't know what to do. when you mix a band do you do it as an audience member, as the singer, the drummer? effects are a lot more involved, reverb for instance. spring type reverb on a guitar you may want to come from the position of the guitar, but a room or space reverb needs to come from everywhere. to calculate the correct reverb the reverb plug-in needs to do it from the perspective of the source. that's presuming you want your band to sound like a band in a room. you may not, this brings up all sorts of creative possibilities. basically though, the industry is new in music and people are learning. it may not last but if it does it will get better.

However, what I have noticed when listening to music now with the built in speakers is this: it sounds like the phone now has the front three speakers in a surround setup. Left, Center, and Right. When listening to music that is mixed well, I get the main vocals from what would be considered center, and other vocals / instruments from left and right. I think it has a nice affect, but of course, your mileage may vary. I'll say this though, since music, for the most part was never designed for a surround setup, the fact that Apple can add these effects and not totally ruin things is a good sign.

Spatial Audio is best when you are listening to music or watching movies that support Dolby 5.1, 7.1 or Spatial Audio specifically. If you listening to music designed for surround sound, then that music won't qond as good. When Audio is specifically tailored for Dolby, specific sounds are sent to specific channels. Listening to none specific Audio for Dolby, you basically get a concert hall like effect where the chip is trying to mimic Dolby and it just doesn't sound right.

That is why many of us in the 90's loved THX (I have an THX Ultra set up at home in my listening room). Atmos audio is a mixed bag for me. My Meridian designed satellites have upward firing drivers and have served me well for years. Not planning to invest in an Dolby Atmos set up until it makes sense to do so. My THX 7.2 setup is pretty fantastic.

Personally when Dolby stereo was introduced that seemed to be perfect. Everything else that has come since is a blip just as this is destined to become.

ya sometimes i get impressed at dolby 2.1 tricking me on my 5.1 setup, at some points i feel like 5.1 and especially spatial seems like a gimmick. I don't see myself upgrading pass 5.1 anytime soon... I plan to wait on even thinking about 7.1.2 until years ahead when more devices support dolby vision or DTS... but it seems dolby won the 7.1 codec wars since apple supports them? I just know that was a thing I had to think about when looking into surround sound... cos in the early years alot of blu ray supported DTS and my device only supported dolby
@fallenscsl

device support as in pc/mac not having surround sound unless you connect it to a audio receiver were as a gaming console it's just plug n play, gpu needs to start to have dolby/dts support so they and output dolby on hdmi. Until then i'm good with 5.1. Cause I do not see nvidia or amd supporting dolby or DTS cos their main focus and concern is graphical performance, I heard nvidia did support dolby once through hdmi but a patch killed it. It just sucks everytime i wanna hear dolby i need to switch over to my apple tv or gaming console.

Spatial audio for Apple AirPods Pro or Max really sucks, but for some very specific content. It does however not work well for normal scenes in a film with audio. It waters it down and makes dialog fly all over the place or sound tinny and for music it is just an abomination

When it comes to music, I've come to the conclusion that stereo still reigns supreme. More focused, more punchy. It seems like most Atmos mixes sound like you're listening to the stereo mix over PA speakers in an empty club. Not sure why you'd want that. I think Atmos for music is a thinly veiled attempt at gatekeeping by the major labels. Yeah, you can mix Atmos on headphones but you'll never truly know what you're sending out into the world. Then add the fact that Dolby and Apple use different decoders. What a mess.

Reminds me of people who said that the special effects in movies in the 90's were amazing. Crap script, crap acting and crap plot were irrelevant.

You can't fake dolby atmos that's the problem. Remember when surround sound amps had pro logic that would take stereo and try to mix it to 5.1 but it's more gimmicky. To get proper atmos it has to be recorded that way. So a lot of songs are going to sound garbage. But at the same time if you watch youtube and select pro logic some songs can sound good because of a good mix. So some songs with atmos will sound good to its a real hit and miss for a lot of songs at the moment unless they remix a lot of them.

things have moved on since pro logic. digital signal processing is much more advanced now, since things like fast fourier transforms can be done extremely fast on modern hardware. the brain is quite good at localisation at does it by a mixture of delays and eqs. having a model of the head allows you to predict the delays or phase differences of the different propagation delays through bone and air as well as the filtering effect of the different media. the brain does the rest. the big problem is that people are not the same. i don't just mean physically as in their head geometry but in their ability to localise. up further in the comments is a blind person who gets quite an experience from spatial audio, somebody who has spent a lot of time hunting or perhaps looking after infants may have different hearing skills. for some people spatial audio is great, for others not so much. the brain is the easiest thing in the world to fool. eventually you can fake anything.

ATMOS is great for video- especially with enough actual decent quality speakers. In contrast with music, ATMOS is vague, fatiguing, phasey, lacking in solid imaging and otherwise not at all true to any actual performance- especially with headphones or in-ears. This is not surprising, given that it was not designed for music. We have mixed in ATMOS and DTS:X for years for video, and audio for a few years. Even the best, like Nora Jones and Chris Jones are not good for the 45-55% who hear even good HTF compensated immersive as almost always behind you, instead of in-front of you. ATMOS has some serious problems to address to work well in music- especially for what over 80% of people listen to roughly 9-% of the time: headphones or in-ears. ATMOS rendered to binaural fails most people and most performances.

SEE…. Ever since Quadraphonic failed economically, four speakers and beyond have from the beginning, needed a rare quality of music engineering and mixing talent to really maximize the format. Likewise for 2022 even more with complicated D. Atmos and Spacial Audio. Fortunately, or not, the powers-that-be dudes keep trying to promote ways to make themselves money, moeny. The Quad Failure, though, is why I never fell for 3D HDTV either, which also ‘tanked’ (those 3D TVs were $3000 to $4000 in the beginning !!). But Quadraphonic has made a semi-quasi-comeback on DVDa and SACD (or some such) haven’t it?? (I just remember the exciting Quad mix of a Moody Blues 8-Track tape in a Pioneer player I installed under my dad’s Ford station wagon front dash, after the Ford parts guy told me it was “…impossible…”.)

Quad forever. Don't want any fake software generated "spatial audio", just give me four speakers, and a good quad mix. And the only way a bedroom artist could release an Atmos/ Spatial Audio is by cutting a very large check for licensing.
