The rotating of brushes without having to go into brush settings or rotating the whole ipad is huge imo. When I do upgrade from my oldier Air, it'll be a super nice feature to have.
Not for me. I bought a new iPad Pro, with the biggest memory I could afford, not long ago. Although I love technology I’m not one of those people who can afford to replace every time a new one comes out. Love your tutorials by the way, always look forward to the new ones x
I’m much the same and honestly for the sake of my tutorials the difference isn’t even noticeable on screen. I skipped the last one and might upgrade because I need more storage but otherwise I probably wouldn’t bother. Thank you glad you enjoy them 😊
So I checked the specs and dimensions are the same as the 2nd gen pencil. The USB-C pencil was just shorter overall. According to the website it will actually be lighter. 19.15 grams vs 2nd gen is 20.7 grams
I was really hoping to get a used m2 ipad and this new pencil, sucks that my only option is one of the new ipads. I plan to use it for art so I guess am stuck.
I would just get a iPad that is compatible with the Apple Pencil 2 Gen and be happy, because Apple does this BS to have people buying stuff that they don’t really need to buy and I’m not understanding why they would make a Apple Pencil that only works for the upcoming iPad Pro and Air.
So, the new iPad is a 13" as compared to 12.9? Is this just semantics or is it ever so slightly bigger? That will make all the current iPad covers, and boards (like my Astropad Darkboard) obsolete.
I just bought a pro and im still trying to work out apple pencil 2. Its doing some things that i thought i disabled. But still way better than the first one.
I bought my first iPad just three weeks ago to learn Procreate. Had I waited another 3 weeks, though. Hehe. Nah. That's always the way nowadays. I'm among those who often feel limited by too many options and struggle to commit. The Apple Pencil Pro looks fancy, but your achievements with your talent on the same equipment I have prove once again that the artist is the most important, not the equipment.
tbf older ipads tend to get discounted heavily in price right before a rumored new version is launched, so presuming you got a good deal on that ipad it's not all that bad. The disappointment really stems if you had bought your iPad at full price when the new ones were right around the corner.
You need to return it! I’m serious. Do not keep it. Exchange it for the new one today!!! You won’t regret it. Apple should not be allowed to do this arbitrary lockout to begin with.
@@johnlocke3481 No worries. I understood from good comparisons that the price, compared to what one would expect, included this and that. I don't want to be in such a hurry. I got what I paid for.
The barrel roll feature is awesome. I have the M2. iPad has a way to try to push you into buying their new equipment I think that they would get a lot more sales if they made it backwards, compatible the chargers that change every time they have a new upgrade what a marketing strategy
Apple has a way to force people to buy things. I just bought my iPad Pro about a year ago and now they upgrade the pencil with the barrel roll, which I think if they’re going to do it for one pencil, they should make it for all the older iPads also especially the one before this newest one what a marketing strategy
Thank you for the info! I love your art and tutorials. This is a bit off-topic, but I find Apple’s presentation aesthetic to be getting rather old. It’s so squeaky-clean and technical. I don’t know…just not exciting or enticing to me anymore.
You’re welcome! Thank you. Yeah I agree, personally I preferred the live audience events with all the tension and flaws, not so much these slick video packages
The reason it’s not supported by older models is the magnet placement on the pencil to account for the new camera placement. It physically can’t charge on older models. (Although I’m sure apple would still make it exclusive even if it could)
Understood, but they could have moved the magnet to the end of the iPad? I’m sure they’d have figured it out if it wasn’t also an opportunity to put pressure on the buy the new iPad too
When I buy an iPad Pro, I always skip 2 or 3 versions. My 2020 iPad Pro is showing little problems with freezing, so high time to buy the new one. So, ordered yesterday the whole package. It cost me a leg and an arm, but each time I buy an ipad Pro, I start saving money for the next one. I saved enough to buy two, so no problem there, but still. With this price it's not for everyone. Can't wait to try out the new possibilities of the Apple Pencil in Sketch Club, providing the programmer implements the new features in the app.
2020 iPad Pro was the last iPad worth getting. Depending on what apple announces in the coming WWDC in relation to software, then this might be next one worth getting. The last 2 iPads (M1 & M2) makes you feel like a bird trying to peck a worm that’s in a transparent glass bottle. ( they could do so much, but Apple wouldn’t let them, but still marketed them and charged you for those out of reach capabilities.)
Ipad air 3 still usable for light use, watch netflix, affinity designer, lumafusion. Now already 6th gen? Did the usb-c make transfer file easier, have not keep updated with the news. If yes, worth it to update
I would be much happier if Procreate had just added some new features to the app which doesn’t seem to have had anything much since Procreate dreams. Apple developers having to get a new IPad and a new pencil is just not a very green and climate friendly development. Just give me something to organise my brush library in procreate, that will do me for now.Thank you James for adding perspective to the hype.😮
been wanting to upgrade my 2019 ipad and 1st gen apple pencil to a 2022 pro for a while now so seeing this new ipad air release with practically the same specs and a new apple pencil has def peaked my interest
I’m getting a new IPad Pro and the new pencil, why not - been saving since I bought the 2018 one! Decided to keep the old one too; giving it to my 95 year old Mom so she can play her brain games.
The only thing I am interested in is the gyroscope, not enough to warrant a new iPad imo. However, if apple is listening I would pay another $100+ for a new Gen 2 Pencil w gyroscope.
Do you have a video of the gesture settings? I seem to not have a few things running comparably together. My pro Pencil stops drawing middle stroke and will only work on anything with my finger. I am technically challenged but I am struggling with this. Thank you 0:35
Hello dear friend James, hope you are doing great ! I remember you suggesting more Brushes ,not the ones that Procreate has as default,Could you please give the link to get them? As always is a pleasure to follow your tutorials and I won’t be tired to say that I love your voice and accent 😊
I JUST got a new 12.9-inch iPad Pro and the 2nd generation pencil, upgrading from my older setup using 1st gen pencil. I guess I should have been keeping an eye on the future releases before investing at the end of last year. Oh, well, I can't see that I would use the new pencil features that much anyway. Thanks for this video. Having said that, I would look forward to seeing one in action, though, if you're going to get one and demonstrate.
The price of the new iPad Pros is a big letdown, but at least we now have a much cheaper 12.9 inch option (the new $799 Air) that's also compatible with the new pencil. Honestly I think that is as much as most artists should go for-not sure what features besides the OLED panel would really benefit them on the Pro.
I got an m1 12.9 ipad pro off ebay a few weeks ago. Perfect condition, 512gb for about $780. Got an apple pencil 2, and a paperlike screen protector. I couldnt be happier with my decision. The new ipad pros are way too expensive, and although the rotate feature is cool, its not worth the extra $1000 or so that a new ipad would be. And the air doesnt have thunderbolt, which i use literally every day. Are the new toys cool? Absolutely. Are they worth the money? Not even close.
I just bought a new ipad 10th generation with apple pencil usb-c. it's on the way. this is my first apple product. is it possible to use apple pencil and write on any web browser like safari or google chrome in real-time? i want to use it for religious scripture reading and learning.
so they added a few small features and called it the Pencil Pro, maybe I missed something but thats just pencil two with 2 or 3 more features and if 2 isnt pro then what makes the actual pro pro?
I got a m1 12.9 off eBay for $780 a out two or three weeks ago. Couldn't care less about this new stuff. Is it cool? Sure. Is it worth $1000 more? Not even close. The new form factor is also useless as most people run a case on their expensive stuff. If you don't, you're not concerned price, as you must be a millionaire, or an ijdiot.
I would be interested in a hands-on review (but will require a new ipad as well). I have the 2nd gen 12.9 pro - hence old pencil. I also have a 11inch M2 pro (mainly work orientated) with the second gen pencil. I think the difference between them is night and day. My issue is, that I like the bigger screen for drawing - hence am stuck with pencil 1. But to me, the 2nd gen pencil is far better. So maybe (maybe!) this pencil might be a huge jump up in feel and usability.
Yeah I’m not understanding why they couldn’t make the Apple Pencil Pro as a universal Pencil so everyone who have iPads regardless of which iPad you have could buy it because it would be capable with all iPads.
I understand that they had to move the magnet because of the change in camera placement, but yeah you’d think they could have figured out a solution that didn’t require a new iPad purchase
@@JamesJulier-Artist Well they could have made hardware (ipad) depending features optional i.e. let the pen work on older ipads with squeeze and haptic fedback, but barrel roll is only available on new ipads. But it's their strategy to make you buy a new ipad every year ;) Worst thing is an ipad user that has a 8 year old one - my olf iPad Air is getting slower and slower, but I only use it for "surfing" strange right? It was fast as hell at the beginning
Funny, the new iPad Air M2 chip seems to just be the remarketed iPad Pro M2, the one I have. I'm not going to upgrade. Bet the M2 Pro will go down in price and they'll sell more of those than the iPad Pro M4.
The greed of companies today is staggering. I was excited for these features but can’t use them. I had the latest brand new iPad Pro yesterday and an incompatible iPad today.
Wow. I’m actually done with apple. This is the last straw. What a shit company. They can easily make it work with last gen iPad pros, but instead it’s an arbitrary lockout because they can’t keep convincing people to buy a 10% better device for $2k every year.
James, have you tried Samsung tablets? How do they compare with iPads, hardware-wise? I hear about a lot of Android alternatives to Procreate trying to catch up, and some being quite successful (Infinite Painter, especially - from what I hear). Ive been using iPad Pro to draw comics for 4 years now, and I think I'm done. Apple isnt just taking their customers for granted, it's outright disrespectful to them. I see it in many ways - in case with iPad, for example, people have been wondering about how they can use the power of M chips on their iPad for awhile now. Apple takes a 18 month break only to come back with a new spec bump, and follow up on it with iPadOS update with new pride wallpapers... Literally becoming a parody of itself.
the prices of apple products have always been overpriced significantly. i mean 2k for the latest ipad pro. get fkd. think i will stick with my 350 quid version and 1st generation pen thanks.
@@JamesJulier-Artist I think that has to do with the camera orientation and where it can charge - because the self-facing camera is now in a different position.
