Apple 'Sapphire' iPhone Lens - Whats it made of?

What is the Apple iPhone camera lens actually made of? Check out this incredibly in depth look into what elements make up the Apple iPhone camera lens. Why does the iPhone lens scratch at a level 6 on Mohs Scale of Hardness? Ill be using the Diamond selector tool, an XRF machine AND an electron microscope.
Apple has been telling us that their camera lens is made from sapphire ever since the iPhone 5s. That is 5 different phones now that have this lens. (5s, SE, 6, 6s, and 7)
Finding the elemental analysis of the iPhone camera lens was quite the adventure. A little outside of the normal repair and durability testing that we do here on this channel. But still a fun project.

Jerry, as even Samsung has noticed, you are not measuring hardness of materials. In a measurement process you do not just hold an instrument in hand and apply random force to it; you should strictly apply only 1 kg force, and the material has to be supported. So what you did doing through this and previous videos is crushing through the thin unsupported lens cover, instead of scratching it. Hence the cracks of the lens, not scratches. In real life scenarios, for example, you put your smartphone on a table or in a pocket and some sand speckle happened to be there against camera's lens, Apple's sapphire layer should work as intended.

Did you not watch the video? Both scans showed it was *over 90% sapphire!* Now obviously this was a joke, but it kinda just goes to show the vastness of the ignorance of people who shit on Apple. I, however, can shit on Samsung, for example, using facts - for example, the asymmetry of their newest phones and screen burn have driven me away, leading me to switch from a galaxy s8 to an iPhone 11 Pro.

I wonder if he ever saw this? Many music teachers start their studios this way. My first grand piano didn't come from a school, but those were definitely some of the first places I went after Steinway. I even visit my old teachers and ask if they have any resources that I could use and they often give it away or sell the equipment and books for a fraction of the price.

@georgiivanov61
@georgiivanov61 8 лет назад
It is not "real sapphire, just impure". It is a normal glass with a super-thin impure Sapphire screen protector on it. That watch was real Sapphire glass with no excuses. Learn to listen properly.
@SwiftHDX
@SwiftHDX 8 лет назад
Georgi Ivanov Did you even watch the video? 90% of the lens was sapphire. If it was "just a coating" it would be like putting a 5mm thick screen protector on a 0.3mm glass.
@ipadhacks1
@ipadhacks1 8 лет назад
Georgi Ivanov If you would know where you are talking about you would understand that sapphire is very brittle, which increases the chance of breaking the lens when the phone is dropped (which doesn't happen with a Watch, and which is the reason that the Apple Watch is made from pure sapphire). To make a lens scratch resistant only a thin layer of sapphire would be needed to get a balance between breaking and scratching. This will hold up perfectly under normal conditions, where glass would have more problems. The reason that the layer comes of here is because more pressure is used than in a typical situation. The impurities in the sapphire are to make it more flexible and less brittle.

A quick laminate test: slowly heat the lens up to about 500 F. Any adhesive material that is carbon based is going to fail. Bubbling, loss of adhesion, burning of adhesive, funny smells are all signs of laminates failing. Glass and sapphire have very different coefficient of expansion, so it is possible the thin sapphire coating would fracture badly as well.

This means the cost marketing the products is shared by all the new products they are marketing. Seriously, your dumb.

Man, the length you've gone to find out what's going on! Great job! Most reviews just follow the trend. If a product is advertised to be something and the public perception is in agreement with the hype over that product, then almost all reviewers just repeat each other to conform to that belief that could be false. But that's what they think they should do to be popular and generate revenue. Great job +JerryRigEverything for going all the way.

Actually, Samsung said noticed about this guy as he has no idea how to measure the hardness of materials. You do not just hold an instrument in hand and apply a random force to it; you should strictly apply only 1 kg force, and the material has to be supported. What you see this guy doing through this and previous videos is this guy crushing through the thin unsupported lens cover, instead of scratching it. Hence the cracks of the lens, not scratches. In normal use a sand speckle would never be able to crush through the outer sapphire layer.
@wiktorkawala6298
@wiktorkawala6298 8 лет назад
in the real world would you ALWAYS apply 1kg= 9.81N of force ? no... If it was in your pocket and something rubbed against it, it could easily be a force over 9.81 N so strictly speaking he is doing a hardness test according to Mohs scale, applying enough pressure but not overly much. What you see are scratches embedded inside, cracks generally show irregular fractures and in this case its fairly uniform indicating that it hasnt been cracked

@ambiva
@ambiva 8 лет назад
Not necessarily, we are in 2016 now, many essential components are made in China (China has sht load of money anyway) because they have to reduce the cost and increase profit. Regardless of what type (Many companies in China can make it's own chips in many sectors now), all you need is the facility and production equipment, which can be built in China to speed up the logistic links. (I know most RAM are from Korea and Cmos/Sensor from Japan)
@ambiva
@ambiva 8 лет назад
If you guys wanna debate about definition of "Made in xxx", its pretty pointless, most Philips' shavers are made in Netherlands but use a lot of Chinese components, do you call it "Assemble in Netherlands?", vast majority of machinery/commercial equipment (e.g. street lighting) in EU/US use castings from Chinese foundries. 100% pure non-Chinese (not a single component) made consumer IT product is rare now as a result of globalization and company profit. China make many expensive & high-end stuff nowadays, it's lots some bad stuff (many greedy/bad/cheap companies in China) got amplified a lot, you know, many westerner love bashing China, using made in China keyboards.
@error262

you are so wrong... CPU is made by Samsung (Korea) and/or TSMC (Taiwan, China). Camera is also made by Sony somewhere in asia (probably korea)... Apple doesnt produce stuff in US, they actually dont produce stuff at all, they only design and market it. Apple doesnt own a factory, they own offices... ONLY thing I know of that's made in US is an Avago sensor probably used as a fingerprint reader. They order stuff from large well known companies and put them together in Foxconn factory (china). They have no tech of their own, absolutely EVERYTHING that they have they bought or are still buying/paying for... Funny thing is that iPhone 7 was supposed to have an OLED screen made by Samsung but they delayed it, they'll probably add it on 7s or 8... Samsung has been manufacturing iphone oled screens for some time now but apple needs something to attract iDiots

***** appleinsider.com/articles/16/06/22/samsung-sharp-plan-to-ramp-up-oled-production-ahead-of-apples-rumored-all-glass-2017-iphone there are more recent topics on this but I'm too lazy to google. But yes, Sharp, you are right, Sharp will probably be in Apple products since it's a part of Foxconn now. Sharp is amazing at display tech, in my opinion beats all others. Do you really think that they would release an OLED iPhone now? They have to keep some stuff for iPhone 7S and 8... Who will buy those if they dont come with something new. I'd bet that they'll market those OLED screens as "Apple OLED Retina"... Anton Zuykov A10 is made only by TSMC, yes. But A9 was made by both Samsung and TSMC. Samsung A9 ran hotter, consumed more power and was slower than TSMC A9 Here are some tests arstechnica.com/apple/2015/10/samsung-vs-tsmc-comparing-the-battery-life-of-two-apple-a9s/

@donovanlewis7142

A basic point of why its not a full sapphire lens or a really pure one on the outside is probably pretty simple. It has nothing to do with Apple being cheap or the part being low quality. A piece of sapphire DOES NOT let as much light through as a piece of glass. You can see this in the Apple watch. The Apple Watch with a glass display gets brighter then the one with the sapphire display. Glass is more transparent so for a camera it allows more light to pass through it. This is a good thing in a camera. People on the internet don't seem to want to learn why and jump right to "Apple is cheap"

+csjdruid they are *not* faster hardware wise! hardware wise they lag like 4 years behind android devices. it's only the proprietary and thus well optimised software that makes them as fast as android devices. (Or call them fdaster, if you want. but no matter if you like them better or not, their hardware just *is* a lot weaker than most android devices (not necessarily a bad thing). It's O.K. to call subjective differences, but don't ignore the facts, please ;-) )

+csjdruid Apple products are just backwarded, just face it, they are popular, cause they are a modern gadgets, people these days won't appreciate real technology, they prefer to overpay for a nice looking backwarded apple, because it's apple. "Whenever I use something like a samsung or htc I always get headaches an eye strain after using them for about 30 mins or so which really sucks." - ??? 4K displays hurts your eyes and gives you headache and 720p does not? Let me tell you something, by saying: "Ima stick with apple until samsung stops with this bullshit" - you will never go back to Android, cause you alread became a apple fanboy... and that's a shame, cause you are not the only one, there are thousands of iDiots.

@LRM12o8 8 лет назад
csjdruid and what does pwm mean when it comes to displays?
@csjdruid434
@csjdruid434 8 лет назад
LRM12o8 Pwm stands for pulse width modulation I think and it's where the backlight in order to be dimmer has to rapidly turn on and off so for someone it appears dimmer. In theory, you shouldn't be able to see this going on, but for some people you can, and for me it gives me a ton of headaches and eye strain. Nearly all android phones use it. The way you can test for pwm is by filming the screen at a certain brightness and if it does, you will be able to see black moving stripes on the screen. If you look up a review on like a samsung, you can see this.
