From what I've read, all of the merchandise is largely worthless once it leaves the store as software prevents any meaningful use of the device. And then of course, the units can be tracked.
They can be teared down and sold for parts. That's how cheap third party repair shop got their "authentic" apple parts. (of course, most of those parts are from broken or scraped phone, not stolen display phones)

@@kevintang5473 Almost all parts on Apple products have serial numbers encoded on them so they won't work in a different phone. I believe this is done to force consumers to pay for expensive replacements from Apple , not to prevent theft.
The thieves themselves aren't using those products for themselves or reselling them to ordinary consumers. Instead, the Apple phones, laptops and other electronics devices that they are taking are bundled and then sold to overseas companies, who then strip them into parts and are used to refurbish other devices. (Repairing Apple devices is a big multi-billion dollar business) This tactic is similar to the prevalent catalytic converters thefts that news outlets thoroughly covered last year.
Taken and sold for parts, sold to a dummy on Craigslist or eBay, etc. Plenty they can do and hacking it also isn't impossible. They don't have to be bright to still be able to make a couple hundred bucks from each device.

I worked in an Apple premium reseller store here in Ireland, while it's not an Apple store, it has to pretend to be, we'd be checked up on by Apple, have to pass store audits etc so the floor plan, layout etc is as Apple store like as you get. We would get robbed at least twice, or three times a year, always around the launch of new devices. When we asked for security we were told it's cheaper to be robbed a few times than to pay security to protect us, and they also didn't want the image of the store to be bad. I guarantee it's the same with these Apple stores. Nothing will change, as to Apple having a few items stolen and putting the staff at risk is not only cheaper, but doesn't ruin the "image" of having a security guard stationed at the store.

there are videos of stolen apple devices self destructing, the thieves posting the videos of it happening, there are a few tech review channels that have bought store display iphones and they are basically devices that look like a fully functioning iPhone but are extremely limited, there is a set number of photos and if you take a photo it will disappear in the gallery and everything will reset back to what it was programmed to, i'm assuming the iPads are the same and possibly the MacBooks, the security chips in the Apple Silicon MacBooks are quite constricting to begin with, it can make buying a legitimate second hand one difficult especially as the SSD can't be swapped out so basically all these thieves did was take display items that are designed for displaying in the store LOL

All of those phones and devices automatically lock themselves and sound an alarm if they're so far away from the store. They're basically useless to the average criminal.
I was at Autozone the other day shopping for some taillight bulbs. Two guys walked in and walked out with four car batteries (heavy) one in each hand. The workers didn't even call the police and told me they don't even care to show up anymore. Crazy times. 😞

It's company policy at most all retailers that you don't risk your life to stop someone from stealing merchandise. Merchandise can be replaced, your life can't.
those laptops are essentially worthless and its serial number is tagged and can be located once turned back on. it is also difficult to sell for parts. the electeonic parts and batteries have a unique serial number -meant to unfortunately stop private repair shops from working on apple products.
As an Apple employee, I cannot disclose how, but it is possible to bypass the demo mode on compatible devices. This doesn't require some high tech equipment, all the device needs is internet connection and a pattern that only employees know, to disable demo mode. However once a SIM/ESIM is installed the cops get alerted about this. They could use it as an iPod, not a phone if they were stealing for personal purposes.

The funny thing is everything they took has traceable serial numbers and EID codes that can't be changed, and there is no such thing as a jailbreak for these devices either so they are kind of useless once stolen.

Those tablets are locked, have tiny processors and tracking. Honestly, they are not a huge loss. Just like jewelry stores are not high end gemstones or precious metals.

When I worked at a law office in LV around 2010 the firm laptop was chained to my desk with a combo lock that I could use to take it to court etc. Apple could do the same if it was concerned

I visit the Philippines [from USA] often. Guards with shot guns and even assault rifles (full auto?) in hand / on slings at airport, banks. Carbines or rifles at the mall, holstered revolvers in many stores and fast-food restaurants. Works wonders, very few challengers.
As soon as we pass a law that says when criminals are caught on tape then the store owner and employees acan use whatever means necessary without fear of the police or lawsuit I guarantee this sort of crime will plumit by at least 75%. Of course then we'll have to extend it to people at home (stunning that it isn't already). Then we'll have to extend it to vehicles. Once you've done that we'll have a "civilized" society only because those who can't be civilized will have to move elsewhere. No need to pay $40K per year to house them - They can enjoy the great outdoors building fences along the border 10 hours a day - anything beyond that and they can earn $5 an hour for their personal savings.
