Great review Just wondering, do you find that surf wax or anything gets stuck in the apple watch and is it easy to get off? Every time ive taken a watch surfing i get wax all on the watch band for some reason.
Personally I haven't had any issues with the Solo Loop and wax, but I can see how the fabric style ones might have that issue. Best advice I can give it was it out after every session and remove any wax that might've got attached.
Hey there! You can also manually configure it using the watch app as well. Also make sure your iOS and watchOS are all up to date as sometimes that can cause issues 🤙
First time I saw your apple watch as a surf watch guide, it was a game changer. Thank you. I am a “mature” surfer and wear glasses. I can’t read the in session stats, I just want to know the time. Are they planning on offering screen options?
Not too sure on that at the moment. What you can do is start the app, go back to the watch homescreen you have and then swipe up to do the waterproof lock. You wont be able to view your stats but you'll then have access to the time easily
Greetings, I recently purchased the Apple watch Ultra today and I was curious do you think there’s a certain wave height you recommend I don’t take the watch out for a sesh. I know the bands are really good support but still any tips?
I've surfed with my Apple Watch Series 7 and Solo Loop in up to head and half waves in Australia with no issues. If you're worried about the bank one of the new Alpine Loop or Ocean bands might be worth considering, espeically with a watch that pricey!
So the spot location is just for the report on the iPhone widget or watch complications, you can paddle out at any location without having to do anything extra - although if the spot isn’t in their current spot list you can name it 🤙
I have a series 7 with cellular and have had a lot of issues with false positives when catching waves. I'm using the Dawn Patrol app for tracking but this thing isn't accurate at all. The watch thinks I'm catching waves when I'm just paddling. Not sure if this is a Dawn Patrol issue or Apple watch issue. Did you experience this?
Hey Colby - having a few similar issues myself at the moment. Spoke with the Dawn Patrol team and they’re working on a fix so fingers crossed it’ll be sorted soon! I’ve swapped to “fast wave” tracking and that’s helped heaps though 🤙
Personally I’ve always gone with the 41” option as bigger watches don’t suit me as much. I’ve always work it over my wetsuit or between the end of the sleeve and my wrist
Solid review. Just bought my first Apple Watch (8) and got two sessions using Dawn Patrol. Also took your advice and got the solo loop. One issue I came across was that the Dawn Patrol app said I paddled six miles in one sesh...not sure how it got the reading that wrong....but it did track my longest rides, etc. Mahalos!
Cheers Gray - and glad you're loving the Apple Watch 8! Sounds like you've been busy on the paddling front!haha! They are releasing a few tweaks to the paddling side of things soon I think to tackle a few niggles with the new Apple Watch series
Thanks for the video. Will Dawn Patrol only track for major surf breaks that are already programmed into the app or will it pick up any spot you’re at and you can then enter it in manually?
@@StokedForTravel thanks… it worked once but the second time it didn’t track any waves even though I caught a bunch. Both were at the same spot. Strange. Might be the glitch you said they’re working on in your other comments. Also before I tap “Start Surfing”, do I have to ‘pin’ a spot from my iPhone first so my watch knows that’s the spot I want it to capture? Or does it just automatically track using gps wherever you are and record the session on whatever spot you have “pinned”? Or if you’re at a break that’s not a common spot already programmed into the app, will it just assume you’re at the programmed spot that’s closest to where you currently are? This is pretty confusing.
Nice video bro. a doubt. Did you have any problems with your Apple Watch from using it a lot in water? I have a series 5 and I had to change it 3 times because of some kind of problem (the most common is the phone to stop working). I'm afraid to buy the 7 series and have a problem again.
Been using mine for years (series 3. 6 and 7) and surf most days without any issues - but I do only have the GPS option so not sure if that might help? Best advice I can give is wash it with cold, fresh water after every surf
Not sure that’s possible in app, however what you can do is start Dawn Patrol, unlock your watch, go back to your usual watch face, swipe up for waterproof mode and then continue with it running in the background. Not the smoothest fix, but should help 🤙
Hey buddy thanks for the vids i went and bought watch 7se set it all up down loaded apps one question its not recording all my waves i played with settings it was set to medium waves speed recorded 1wave out of 5 then i set it to medium waves didn’t record anything . Have you got any suggestions bro
Hey Hayden - they're working on some adjustments at the moment apparently as the 7 and new WatchOS have messed with the sensitivity a bit. Try on small wave setting and see how you get on with that
@@StokedForTravel apple says no soap just water for cleaning. Avoid high velocity water like water skiing. Lotions and perfumes too. They say the water resistance can degrade over time.
@@JanutoloJon yeah i just rinse mine in the beach showers or under the tap as soon as I get home 😊 been using my watches daily for the last few years (most recently the Series 7) and havent had any issues, even on bigger days
Thanks for the review. I have had a number of challenges where my watch and it hasn't successfully tracked any sessions. The watch also turned off mid surf. Any thoughts? Also when I start the tracking, after about 30 seconds the watch remains locked and goes back to my normal home screen and stays there. Have you run into similar issues? Thanks
Hey Allen, they’ve been doing some tweaks recently (especially with the Series 7) as the watchOS seems to have messed with the tracking a bit. Some fixes are coming soon. As for the watch switching off and returning to the watch face I’m not too sure. The best fix for some of these glitches is to update to the latest OS (both phone and watch), delete the app and do a fresh install. Hopefully that will help 😊
Love the review, super helpful! Question - I just bought the rip curl search gps2, and honestly not that stoked about it… my biggest complaint is that it oftentimes thinks that I caught a “wave” when in reality it was just a duck dive… do you have this issue often or at all with the Apple Watch and dawn patrol app? Is there a way to calibrate the app for your skill level and/or swell size? Any other comments around this topic? Thanks!!
Hey Scott, glad you like the review! There can be the same issue with the Apple Watch as well, but overall I found it more reliable than the Ripcurl option and they certainly adjust and tweak everything more on Dawn Patrol too 🤙

Definitely the Apple Watch 7 or SE is the best surfing watch (I've purchased Garmin Instinct Solar Surf and I returned it to seller because the waves data was wrong all the time, and the tide data disappeared sometimes...). But you don't say in the review that the battery duration in Apple watch is only 18h if you use GPS so you have to charge the watch every day. It's a big problem for a expensive watch... Perhaps the Apple Watch 8 and SE will have better battery duration? In the other hand: it could be a good alternative a Samsung Galaxy watch or similar? Thanks and congrats for your channel and traveling :) Greetings from Barcelona!
For sure, and the updated SE which just got announced is a solid option too! With battery life I havent really found that a problem as I charge all my devices overnight, but if you were doing something like a surf camping trip it might be a bit more of an issue!

@@StokedForTravel The new SE has 18h battery duration and the new Apple watch 8 too :( Only the ultra version has 36h autonomy but is too much expensive! I'll choose the new SE and charge it every night like you because has the best apps for surfing. Do you have opinion in Samsung galaxy watch or Amazfit T-REx for surfing? Thanks! :)
@ yeah they're pricey hey?! I haven't used either of those options yet unfortunately, but I'll add them to my review list!

@@StokedForTravel Great bro! These days I've been investigating about the smartwatches you can use for surfing and now I'm a big expert LOL The Samsung and Amazfit options looks like very good but It had been impossible to find Apps for those watches... Thanks to you!
I got an apple watch series 7 and I downloaded Dawn patrol but when i go to forecast to get the watch face it tries to make me buy soul surfer, do i have to buy it to get the watch face for my series 7?
I'm pretty sure you can test it out using the free version, but for the full range of complications and data in the app you will need the Soul Surfer option 🤙
@@StokedForTravel yup your right, i ended up using your link in the desc to get the layout, then downloaded the "surf watch" app to replace the water temp and all the sensors that wouldnt work :)
@@prothinsvods2017 happy days! Personally Soul Surfer is definitely worth having it in a single appl though - the paddle tracking feature is launching in the next week or so too - I'm testing it out in BETA at the moment for them!
@@StokedForTravel I agree im probably going to buy it in the future just cant right now, that sounds dope, you making a video on the paddle tracking soon?
What are your thoughts on the new ocean band that was just released with the Apple Watch Ultra? Think it would be more suited to surfing than the other options (solo loop, sports band etc)?
What I need to know, Can I use (answer to in-call , send text or audio messages) while I am in the water?? Have you ever try to do it? That would be great!
Technically you should be able to do that with the cellular version. Just be aware using the touch screen in the water isn’t going to be the easiest thing to do though 🤣
@@StokedForTravel exactly...maybe you should do a video about and show how and if it works decently! it woud be very helpful as I generally surf during works time, and it would let me following to "work" even if on lineup 😅
Nice work! Quick question, I just bought a series 7, with cellular, installed the free version of the Dawn Patrol App, but I'm having issues with the app not tracking surf. I'll turn it on before paddling out and can see the session time, but it does not count /track anything else. Any idea why that's happening? Btw, I have tried changing the wave setting and still does not work. Haven't been able to log into DP using my FB account either. Thanks in advance!
hmmmm how strange! I know they've been having some tracking issues with the new WatchOS but this sounds a bit different. Have you tried totally unistalling DP on your watch and iphone and reinstalling again?
Strange indeed. I have uninstalled from both, phone and watch. I thought it could be some settings I’d overlooked. I’ll try just using the Surfline instead. Cheers!
Let me start with I do not work for Surf Watch or Dawn patrol, not even in the tech sector. Dawn Patrol started out well but is completely unusable for me now. I looked for an alternate app a couple weeks ago and came across Surf Watch. It’s leaps and bounds better than dawn patrol. Surf Watch gets 95% of my waves, dawn patrol was getting about 20% on an average session. I’ve adjusted all setting on dawn patrol, nothing makes it work. I’ve had sessions that have recorded zero waves. I suppose if you pay them the monthly or yearly subscription fee it’ll be more accurate. The Surf Watch app has a paid piece as well, but the free version wave tracking works perfectly. Surf Watch free edition has as 90% of the info/data collection and tide/forecasting as the paid version of dawn patrol.
Hey Andy, sorry to hear the app isn't working for you, but cheers for the heads up on Surf Watch. When I first started testing apps that one was clunky and crashed constantly, but it sounds like they've made some solid progress since then and I'll check it out
Very disappointed with this app. Three sessions in a row where I caught multiple long rides, it recorded that I caught 0 waves. Three straight sessions. I know it was turned on because it registered the length of the session, bpm, and calories burned. Wtf. Has anyone else had this problem with Dawn Patrol recently? This can’t just be happening to me.
Hey Jeremy, sorry for here it’s not working well at the moment. Have you tried uninstalling the app (on both phone and watch) updating the OS on both devices and reinstalling? They’ve recently released an update and that’s fixed a few niggles that the latest watchOS threw up! Let me know how you get on 🤙
Used my Apple Watch to surf, I had big issues and now don’t have Apple Watch anymore. Horrible device if you wanna use on the water. Apple said “Isn’t on warranty anymore and it’s only ‘water resistant’ so bye bye!” I got a simple Casio and works perfectly! For 10% of the Apple Watch cost! 🤣
I've used Apple Watch to surf, then broke... called Apple Support they said "The Apple Watch is not water proof, is water resistant..", I've told them "How the hell do you want me to use the surf mode?????"... summary, don't use apple watch to surf!!!
Sorry to hear yours broke, I’ve been using them for the last 6 years and apart from the one I lost (was a bigger day, snapped a board too that session!) I’ve had no issues at all
