It is not uncommon for apple trees to flower at the wrong time of the year if growing conditions were tough, but there are certain things you need to know about apples flowering at the wrong time, what you should be doing and what you should not do to your flowering apple tree.

Have you ever had your apple tree flower at completely the wrong time of the year? I would love to hear about your flower power story 🌻

Thank you for clearing this issue up for me. This is a common occurrence in my land of blazing hot summers, long cool autumns and mild winters punctuated by brief freezes. Now I know what to do when this happens. I like your videos because you always present detailed scientific explanations of why these things occur and how they should be addressed.

We’ve experienced the same long, hot summer here in northern Victoria, Aust. We started with a few 36 degree days mid-Spring. Today was the only cool day we’ve had all summer and it’s heating back up tomorrow. I’m very much looking forward to Autumn to get out into the garden and plant some winter crops.

Yeah, I think the whole southern hemisphere was hit pretty hard this summer and it was quite dry too. I also can't wait for the cooler transition time that autumn brings 🌻🌻🌻

Thank You Craig, that was valuable information you shared. I have bought an Anna Apple grafted tree. I want to transplant it into a bigger pot. I don't want to grow it in the ground. What size pot should I get? Thank You for your time and effort in making this video. 🤗👍🙏

Good choice of apple you chose there 😁 I'm so glad to hear this video was informative for you and I really hope you get some good harvests and stay tuned because I will be doing lots of videos with my apples that you can follow. For apples from in pots I wouldn't suggest anything smaller than 58cm. It's a nice big pot but not massive. I'll also be doing videos of how to care for them in pots 🌻

Move it inside under lights lol. I'm sure it needs some chill hours. I have never heard of this before but I'm in Washington State and it only get's to 100 degrees a couple times a summer and it will be back in the 80's within a couple days.

Yeah, our summer are really long and very often reach high 90's for weeks on end and the. A cold snap followed by heat really tricks younger apple and pear trees. Luckily our winters remain relatively cold for at least 3 months so we do get the chill hours but that drastic ups and downs really mess around with the trees flowering clock 😂🌻

@@MySustainabilityJourney Thanks for the knowledge. It opened up a few things to consider if I move out of the Pacific NW or even the USA like I am just starting to contemplate.

Nice video! Where did you get your apples from/did you grow them from seed?

Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it! I got mine from Norgarivier here in George. The quality of their trees are really, really good. I would never grow a fruit tree from seed as I would never end up with the variety I am looking for as trees from seed are never true to variety so grafted varieties are the way to go if you want specific varieties and if you want fruit sooner. An apple grown from seed would take up to 7 years to fruit, which is a really long wait 🌻

I planted an Anna Apple on 26 December (xmas present) and it immediately produced blossoms and 4 little apples. I am in the western cape. Can i leave the apples that is about thumb size now or do i have to remove them?

Yaaaay for getting such an awesome present! Personally, I would remove them and would not have let them set fruit as you want all of the energy to go into getting the roots settled from transplanting. Based on this I would remove the fruit and use foliar spray up until the leaves fall off for winter and then let your tree wake up and flower nice and early in spring. You might be able to get those apples slightly ripe, but that's going to be quite late into the season and take a lot of energy from the tree as it's getting ready for dormancy. That's what I would do 😁🌻
