This thing is blazing fast! Switching apps and vids with my ADHD brain was so quick. I made the switch to a ATV from a Roku for Twitch and the ecosystem. Great review!
I agree with most of your points Lon, but there are two compelling reasons to upgrade. These two reasons won't effect everyone, but #1 - Samsung is the best selling TV on the market so adding HDR10+ support is huge as I have a 82 inch QLED that doesn't do Dolby Vision (big deal for a lot of people). #2 - Plain and simple, it's just runs faster, so gaming is going to be a better experience for those who want that (not for me). I don't see a reason to upgrade unless those two things are really important to you!
Good point, I had the 2021 in the living room with my LG C1 OLED so I didn’t need to upgrade, but bought the new version anyways since I wanted an Apple TV for my bedroom in place of the older Roku tv that’s slowing down and runs choppy so it was a good investment. Plus will have more storage and faster chip for main tv
Hi. I just received mine a few days ago. My favorite feature so far, if you hold down the Siri mic and say "what did they say" it will rewind 15 seconds and turn on subtitles. Great for us old folks.
The ring with the directional buttons on the remote can act as a jog dial in some apps if you leave the touch function enabled in settings. While a movie is on pause in Apple TV app, I can do a circular motion with my thumb on the outer ring to very quickly scroll the movie time line. Weirdly the settings menu on the Apple TV itself doesn't properly support this jog dial motion - it scroll back up when you're circling up from the 6 o'clock position back to the 12 o'clock position.
Very informative video unlike just another "spec review" video on RU-vid. Well done. Also, glad to see this device works well with your monitor because that's exactly how I plan to use this device too. Looking forward to another update video on this. Like a 3 or 6 months later video.
Great review as always Lon ! I have the Apple TV 4K released last year so don’t think it’s worth upgrading even tho the extra storage never hurts. Keep up the great work Love the ch.
I upgraded. Completely anecdotal, but I swear lots of latency when using YTTV and paired HomePod minis feels improved. Volume mute seems much snappier and barking out Siri commands (skip ahead, pause, etc) seems noticeably better.
Definitely among the better and informative reviews out there. Most others i checked talked about stuff in the marketing material which was pointless. Thank you.
I bought this third generation Apple TV and have noticed that the HDHomeRun app runs snappier when pausing, playing and rewinding live TV, but I have this annoying glitch like someone is pressing “up button” every time beginning playing You Tube video or even scrolling through menu
First time here. You are very easy to understand, and I have enjoyed listening to you sharing your knowledge of the new Apple TV 4k new model. Thank you.
Thanks for this video, Lon. For the most part, I use Rokus in my house. I like the Roku interface. It's simple and intuitive. Unfortunately, it has no bluetooth connectivity. I bought this Apple TV 4K unit and it connects seamlessly with my Airpods or a Bose bluetooth speaker I had lying around the house. That makes a world of difference. Plus, it is faster and more responsive than any of the Roku models I have, and therefore was worth the extra money. I hesitated to buy the Apple TV unit for that reason ($$$) but I'm glad I did.
Is it too much to have a USB port on it to plug in an external harddrive to play videos from the drive without the need for these videos to traverse through the home network streaming from a NAS? I mean this AppleTV can run Plex so why not give it the ability to play from a local external storage.
Apple TV Remote may not show by default when you wipe down on iPhone (my dad called me a few days back and I walked him through getting it to show) Settings > Control Center then you can add the remote and other features as well (8:26)
Super review that I’ve now watched 3x. Only issue I have is the fast forwarding scroll wheel. Is there another way to use a button to scroll through videos? 73 and take care Lon
Question, Do you know if the Apple TV will work with a TV and soundbar that are different brands? The soundbar is connected to the TV via optical cable not HDMI CEC. Firestick and Chromecast with Google TV both work with different brands but Roku does not. edit: I got the AppleTV 4K 3rd gen and it will not turn on/off my Samsung TV because this feature requires HDMI CEC but it does control volume on my Vizio soundbar. Great streaming device and significantly faster than Roku Ultra, Chromecast with Google TV and Firestick 4K.
I'd like to see an Apple TV in stick form. I have a wall mounted TV with a fire stick hidden away. I like the small size of stick devices but the build quality on the Firestick has been a let down (2 failed out of 4).
2:11 Perhaps the reviewer only uses one or two apps, but when using multiple apps, there is a huge difference in performance. Apps launch easily three or four times faster than the original, and they stay in memory longer, so very often an app opens instantly.
For the Match Content Option 13:35 , depends on what app you're using. Like for apps with ad's, I usually get the flickering of the screen when it changes from DolbyVision to regular then back to DolbyVision. Gets annoying.
Quick question Lon. I recently bought the Samsung S95B. And the new apple tv. Should I change the settings from the apple tv to 4k-SDR and match content & frames to "on" and chroma to 4:4:4. A lot of people me that. But I figure I'll ask a pro. Thanks great video
It would be great if this Apple TV could compete with the Nvidia Shield Pro. Are the limits due to hardware or could it be software upgradeable to compete with the Shield?
software could update it, but it's apple, they will never update the DV profiles or the audio. buy it for what it is right now, or buy a shield pro if you need the plex services.
Have they fixed the lip sync issue for the die hard Plex users that want to see Dolby Vision. I might have to go back to the Shield if they cannot fix that known issue.
Just got the same Apple TV and so far I'm happy. I wish it would go to the home screen when you press that button and not the Apple TV home. Maybe some setting I missed? I got it because the built-in Roku player in my TCL TV would drop the sound in Plex when I'd fast-forward or rewind. I noticed the same audio issue with the Apple TV+ Roku app. You'd have to ff or rewind until you got the sound back. Real annoying and not an issue with the Apple TV. I have a fire TV, but it doesn't support my cable company's streaming app. I don't like having to switch streaming devices just to get an app to run. I had the original Apple TV and I could not stand that POS remote. At least with this one, you can disable that tracker function. How many times do you grab the remote and that tracker starts sending commands because you touched that pad.
i love this yes i miss kodi that i used on my firstick 4k but having infuse hooked up to my plex and using an app i paid for called istb for my iptv it makes it useable because the firstick 4k just could not handle my 4k dolby atmos/vision hdr10+ content so this apple tv with the 1gb ethernet its so fast for me its just so good so many pros than cons not too forget how the fire tv devices ads on homescreen lag the device so much
A question for you lon and any other apple tv user I am into taking screenshots of my media in plex, is there flexible way to do it in this device? Like taking screen shot and directly it will be saved in nas
Thank you for the wonderful review! I’m seriously considering Apple TV 4K. The only question I got is: would the picture quality be better then the build in player? My tv is Sony a90j oled and until now no streamer is better. Thank you again!
I was curious about the same thing. (LG C1 65” here) .. From the reading I’ve done, it seems Apples own streaming content will have a noticeable improvement in picture quality, supposedly streaming at a higher bitrate. Netflix and others probably won’t be a big difference, other than interface responsiveness.. The a15 chip comes within 5% of the single core benchmark speed of Apple’s M1 chip, so it’s quite a speed demon. Quite a huge leap up from the relatively sluggish chipsets in our TVs.
On my 2022 Apple TV 4K on tvOS 16.1, Match Dynamic Range switching between Dolby Vision, HDR and SDR is not working. I have to switch manually. This is not an issue on my 2021 unit. Is anyone else having this issue?
DO NOT MATCH DYNAMIC RANGE… (Match frame rate is OK) when you do that match dynamic range. Noticing RU-vid, he cuts off the first two or three seconds of the video. And I think it’s doing it in a couple of other TV shows as well. If not movies. But most notably in RU-vid.
lon, this may need to be a video about this apparently Netflix is wanting to do a crackdown on password sharing what is a little confusing though, is that you have people who dont live in a household who share netflix passwords vs people in the same household who have the same Joint account as the main person who pays for it and it would be a good idea to better understand this
in the apple tv I have disney and hbo and the menu can be seen with the apple tv interface, yesterday i contracted prime video and i can't see prime video with the apple tv interface, its a app issue ?
I own Apple stock I also am an Apple user with Apple iPhones, iPad and 1st Gen Apple TVs. I like the upgrades but im tired of corporate America charging more and providing less (ie no charger). I am not a buyer .
Thinking about getting my first 4k ATV to use with my LG C1 4k .. so far I’ve been using C1’s apps for everything, which can be sluggish. I do wonder if it’ll be a noticeable upgrade to the visual fidelity of streaming content? I’m pretty heavily invested in iTunes movies, having purchased well over 100 titles. Other than that, Netflix is the only other service I regularly use for TV/movies
You may have mentioned this, and I missed it, but, I use Home Kit in my "smart home." I have 2 iPod Minis, and one is the hub. If I add the Apple TV with ethernet and actually use the ethernet hook-up as opposed to the WI-FI in the Apple TV, will Apple default to the current iPod mini as the hub thereby defeating the benefits that come with a wired (ethernet) connection?
Quite lame that so expensive thing doesn't have gyro mouse on controller. Heck my already multiple years old top of the line Samsung TV has gyro mouse and loads Netflix etc. just as fast.
I have mine in 4k sdr and I enabled match content as you but it does not switch to Dolby vision on movies I know are in DV. Amazon Prime is my streaming source. What could be wrong? My tv is a LG QNED85 fwiw.
@@LonSeidman The Lord of the Rings. I can get it in DV through my LG WebOS apps.Through Apple it defaults to HDR and through the LG apps it defaults to DV. Not a lot of difference in the picture but curious as to why it does this?
No, but you can still download your content to another Mac on your network and use that as a "server". The feature you're describing has been gone since Apple TV went from the original ("white") box to this new smaller black form factor some 6+ yeaars ago.
a apple tv sounds like a amazing device for TV entertainment. Not a fan of Amazon's fire tv and its interface. If only they had a USB port and allowed video playback and image viewer through it. I can live without a web browser but it would be nice to watch my shows offline and that aren't on subscription services anymore.
If these things would let you plug a portable hard drive in them I'd consider them but as is they're useless to me. So far, from what I can tell, *Nvidia Shield* is the way to go for those people with videos on a portable hard drive.
Here’s where the Apple TV fails. The Netflix app is complete garbage. Heavily outdated. Not to mention Apples ridiculously high standards for apps which is why they don’t get the new features that other streaming devices do. I used an Apple TV for awhile. The picture was AMAZING but the Netflix app just killed it for me. Apple and Netflix clearly don’t get along and it shows.
