Can you make a video showing us how this device can help someone who is visually impaired or blind as a mobility aid and what it could do to be an assistive technology in the real world? It would be nice to know if you could use this to cross streets or find things in a store or on public transit to read the markers or on buses and trains or find the bus stop sign and know if your pathway is clear or not etc? If there was a version that could let you know if there is a green light or if there are steps or a big crack in the sidewalk that would help me because I am legally blind and I use a power chair.
This is not currently possible: the Apple Vision Pro blocks all pixel-level camera access by third-party apps, so no talking OCR, object recognition or sensory substitution for blind users.
Wow! Yours is the first video I've seen that covers Vision Pro accessibility well. Thanks for showing the setting to ignore eye movement. As a card-carrying member of the Nystagmus club, I always enable the similar settings on iPhone and iPad. I think it's called something about attention on the other devices.
Wow! VoiceOver seems incredibly clunky on Vision Pro. I'm sure after a while of use it would become more intuitive, but it'd be great if they would integrate gestures like trackpad commander for macOS. Thank you for sharing this Sam!
Please help answer guys, can this tool enlarge what we see? Like the zoom on the camera. If it can then maybe it can replace my monocular 😅 Btw I have stargardt
I will cover all of these questions in my upcoming review video which will be posted this Saturday morning. BTW, I also have Stargardts, but I don't "suffer" with it, I simply have it. Suffering is a choice.
@@theblindlife thank you very much, and sorry im using translate last time and I just realized used that word "suffer"😅. Im from indonesia and I'm feel grateful being a stargardt people 😁
Appreciate your job, Sam,. But just a question, do you think is it really useful for blind people in terms of finding our way, navigating, finding objects, etc.?
Oof, hard pass then, even if I DID have that kind of money to throw around. If I was going to put this thing on my head, I'd at least like it to be able to zoom in on the real world, not just windows. I think I'll wait a good decade for it to mature a bit, LOL! Great video, BTW!
My opinion on this product as a visually impaired person. Apple Vision Pro is a predominantly product for people with average or normal vision as its name says. Although it can be somewhat customize up to certain way to be used by visually impaired people is more than clear that , at least for the time being, we are not part of the target community for this product. That combined with the fact that is extremely expensive and with limited amount of applications, even for the sighted people, it makes very difficult to recommend the Vision Pro, at least right now.
Some aspects of android are better than Apple, and vice versa. Android is much better at customizing the user interface for low vision. Changing the size of on screen elements, better options for large widgets, even a better magnifier. Apple is an easier operating system to use for people who are new to smart phones. Apple also does the screen reader better.
I went to a demo but it took 20 minutes trying to configure it for me then the rep basically cut it short because of time. I have contacted Apple and they are to call me to schedule a longer demo. I think this could work for me
Having just had ny VisionPro demo, I am anxious to compare your verdict as to its usefulness as an assistive device to my own. O very much appreciate what you have done this far.
I think blind people don't see the power of this device yet. for me this is going to be a game changer in just a few years from now and it will going to kill all those other very expensive goggles that are from orcam or the like. besides all of that i think this is going to be a true game changer for deaf people who use sign language since this can really learn sign language and interpret it back to them and to the hearing people
Yes, technically the potential is great. A lot will depend on Apple lifting their policy of blocking camera view access for third-party apps. No computer vision apps can be used at present.
Hey Sam. Thanks again for more information on the Vision Pro. I was wondering if there is going to be a video showing its use as a magnifier or anything else that might overlay on the outside world. Thanks again man.
THX for this video. Is there a magnifier app on the Apple Vision Pro, too? So you can use the build-in camera & button / digital crown to zoom in to the camera footage?
One thing I’ve been genuinely curious about regarding voiceover on the Vision Pro is that I saw in the simulator it does include braille screen input. I’m very curious as to how that works on the Vision Pro, and if perhaps it might be easier easier to type in braille then it would be to type on this quirky little keyboard that floats out in the ether?
I saw another video that a guy used apple vision and the passthrough basically made him see wayyyyy better then he could. Did that also happen to you? did the pass through give more of your vision back?
Hey Sam! Thanks so much for the awesome Vision Pro videos, I am looking forward to watching more about it. One quick question does it have magnifier built in like the iPhones and iPads do?
That is the big question everybody wants to know! Unfortunately, I’m going to be a little bit of a jerk and say that you need to wait for my full review video to find out, lol! But don’t worry, it’s coming out later today, 10 AM Eastern.
What I don't understand is why such a heavy headset? why not put the hardware encapsulated with the battery, if you need an external wire and carry a battery, why not put the external CPU to make the headset lighter?
My wife who has retinal degeneration tried it today. Was a major disappointment - the pass-through AR was simply not bright enough to be of much help when using it as a visual aid in anything other than an extremely bright environment - even in the store itself which was fairly well lit the pass-through was much dimmer and in dim light it would likely be useless her. The demo person didn't seem to be aware of any adjustment that would compensate for this. We'd be very grateful If anyone could inform us of any known tweaks for this.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Unfortunately, I noticed the same thing as your wife. I don’t think there’s anything that can be done about that. It’s something I mentioned in my full review video, which is coming out this morning at 10 AM.
A close friend of mine has Stargardt. He used Vision Pro in Guest mode and couldn't get by the eye tracking, like you commented to others. Do I disable eye tracking and enable voice over before giving it to him in guest mode?
Although this was somewhat informative , you kind of put the cart before the horse. I guess I would like to know first and foremost possible uses for the Apple vision, pro for the blind in ways, that it will enhance what we already do. In other words, what’s the reason to even buy one in the first place in the low vision community. can I use it as wearable magnification goggles to see my environment? Can I use it as a video Magnifier for reading? Or is it simply just an aid to watch TV so far I have not seen a reason why a low vision person would consider purchasing Apple Vision Pro
of all the information people wanted to know, does it have accessibility was by far the top question. That's why I put this video out first. Currently working on my full review and it will be out this Saturday
@@theblindlife yes but, you should ALWAYS start at the beginning and NOT assume your viewers are tech savvy. You are not keeping in mind ALL viewer levels. You and I had this discussion concerning your video on gimbals. Making sure everyone is on the same page at the start is most important. I , personally, am seeing this as a trend on your channel and I am getting so frustrated that I am considering unsubscribing. Yes I know to be sure not to let the door hit my butt on the way out, but I need to find content providers that actually care that EVERYONE understands what is going on from word one. That seems to happen less and less on this channel. You have gotten too in love with technospeak to be of use to me.
$3500.00? I don’t think so. A product that will make Apple even richer. Must be for the people who stand in line over night for the newest IPhone that is overpriced and minimally different than the previous model. I am slow, but not stupid. No insult intended.
Please demo zooming when you have several apps open and the keyboard showing. Do they all zoom together like it would on a monitor? If not, does the zoomed window overlap the others or push them away?
No, de zoom effect only affects the window you're either looking at or currently interacting with. Also, the zoom only extends within the edges, or boundaries, of the window. So, if you had windows stacked on top of each other overlapping, the zoom wouldn't cover a lower window up anymore than the upper window already does. Hopefully that makes sense
Can you do another one with the voiceover but walking on the streets or interacting with people or something? I want to know how the vision pro reads the environment and the people and objects.
Man, cant wait to hear what your week with it was like. So glad you are sharing your experience as i've been super curious on how this could help our daily life!
Thanks for a great video. Is the sound build into the headset, or do you have to hook up some Airpods? If the sound is build into the headset, is it then like what we hear on the video? Then it’s impressive. I look forward to more videos.
Yes, the sound is built into the headset. The speakers sit on the straps that sit right above your ears. The sound is fantastic, it also has spatial audio. Talk more about it in my upcoming review video.
How does a blind user interact with apps and other spatial computing interfaces and objects other than the Settings app? For example the dinosaur demo or full immersion?
Looking forward to see more videos so I can make a decision if it's something spectacular or just a gimmick. I can see the potential but have they achieved that on these first gen devices, time will tell.
Hello Sam. Please, could you show how to write in braille screen input mode? Or can it be done? Six years ago ,when I had been using İphone, braille screen input was the feature I had been using the most frequent. Even though I don’t have been using any Apple device, I wondered it on this device.
how do you do the magic tap jesture (2 finger double tap on iphone/ipad, play paus button on macos) what it on the vision pro? Yeah, those voiceover gestures will be hard to comprehend!
1 question, what on earth is go back gesture? Like on IPhone you would do that crazy 2 finger z, what to do on Vision Pro? I wouldn't mind having this gesture thing for my Iphone, where it just sits somewhere and I controle it with my gestures. And that magnification feature seems amazing. I am guessing you can also do that for real world? Like not the app window or the vertual environment, but zoom in on things which the vision pro cameras are actually seeing outside? Like a very nice CC TV VR/AR hybrid?
Thank you so much for making this video which I will share with my colleagues at a certain fruit-themed company who launched a mixed-reality headset this last Groundhog Day.
BTW. could you make an updated video on phone and tablet holders? Would like to get a holder so I could use my phone or tablet as a CCTV/electronic magnifier. Looking for something sturdy that can be mounted to a table with a long arm.
For me it just doesnt work well. I went to 2 demos because first one the person had issues setting it up. 2nd Demo I went thru 3 devices before they could configure it for me. I only see in one eye and the left eye has legally blind vision. I wasnt really able to see everything clearly on the screen and had to look all over to find text that was too small for me. I also felt like I was looking thru a tunnel. Perhaps the inserts make the FOV worse I already have limited field of view. This device made me feel worse. Maybe the next model will work for me. I really wish it would have worked for me.
I think it's amazing Apple built this all into the OS.. I'm still nto sure I get the purpose of this device.. Maybe I'm old, but I just do not get it.. I guess it wold be cool to watch a movie on a plane like this but other than that, not sure how this would work into my life.. Interested to hear how ti works for you with SD
I love the speak screen option, when toggled on an icon appears in the upper right corner of the screen which enables you to have VP read the screen. I primarily use zoom features and large text, also set my window size to large. The option to set window size is under display rather than accessibility. Personally, I have found VP accessibility features work better on VP than other Apple devices. “Works Better” may not be a good choice of words, they feel more intuitive and natural. I have 20/150 corrected vision with nystagmus.. It’s nice having a number of apps opened at once around me, all in large format that I can see and interact with. However, the VP isn’t as comfortable as I’d hoped and takes some time getting use to. I’m having a very difficult time deciding whether to keep. Other than comfort, I think the image quality of the pass through camera should be crystal clear for a device starting at $3,500 for the base model with 256 GB of storage. You really need to bump up to the 512GB model which then puts you at just under $4,000 with taxes. I think Apple should have sold the VP for $1000 less than the current prices. Great channel, love the reviews, inspiring Thanks you for your time … 👍🏻
I have to agree, this product is for somebody who has useful vision. What I’m curious about is I have two prosthetic eyes, so how would that affect the functionality with the eye tracking and such? Also, my other question is, would it be feasible or usable to use this with one hand, as in my situation, I only have one usable hand? 15:24
How was it to use them to enhance vision?? I have low vision and take my glasses off to see things very close. I was hoping since the screen is close to my eyes I could use this to actually see better since it uses cameras. Any thoughts?
I will probably buy one of these eventually, but I think I'll wait for the second or third gen to come out before I do. Really want to try it out though. Might go to an apple store for the demo.
Thanks for doing this video on accessibility features of the vision pro. Most VR headsets have limited accessibility options so Apple deserves a little credit for not ignoring the disabled. Its to bad the device can not be used as a regular accessible device cause the price point would otherwise be reasonable as compared to other devices. Also, i do not think Bigscreen Beyond comes with any accessible features but it may work wth the accessibility features with your computer
