This is the version that came out of the camera. If you want to see a straightened-out version, see • Applecross Pass in 7.5... It would be good to know which version people prefer: please add a comment.
Monday 7th August 2017 was a lovely day, as well as being a public holiday in Scotland.
As part of a month-long trundle around the North and West of Scotland in our lovely old Hymer S700 motorhome, we decided to go over the Applecross Pass.
Almost two years late, I've finally got round to uploading the dashcam footage.
Looking back at it, I notice how noisy the engine is and how many rattles are being picked up from the dashboard.
Not long after this trip, I took the dash apart and rebuilt it, making the van a lot quieter.
So this is a historical record of how noisy the van was in those days.
It's is also a record of a trip over an impressive moutain pass through some amazing scenery in clear, bright weather.
Filmed in 1920x1080 HD on a Mobius dashcam, which is many years old.
The Mobius is brilliant: completely fit and forget, it starts when the ignition is turned on, off when the ignition goes off.
Unless you want to save the videos permanently, no input is needed, though it's a smart move to set the clock twice a year - probably when the clocks go forward or back.
At the time of writing, I don't know how much RU-vid will degrade the video quality: it is great before upload!
The camera is fitted to the underneath of the drop-down bed over the front seats, so sudden bumps in the road are smoothed out by the pneumatic strut mountings, which makes the windscreen surround seem to jump up and down occasionally.
In reality, the ride in the Hymer is lovely and smooth.

pretty sure there is a sign advising against motorhomes and caravans. Glad it passed without issue though.

@@g-m-b6672 ...or to people who can spell. If you had the tenacity to watch the video, you would discover that no peril accrued. You would also note the far larger HGV travelling in the other direction, which it does regularly. Of course G-M-B knows better than the professionals, and better than the authorities that did not ban large vehicles from the route. The arrogance of ignorance.

Why are most tourist five hundred films only showing uncrowned roads? Won’t the 500 company allow ones taken in holiday seasons showing all the locals having to follow unskilled drivers in their hired motor homes?
@iainathairydog
@iainathairydog 3 года назад
There is no 500 company. It's just a suggested route using public roads. The film here is an unedited account of a crossing on a summer bank holiday weekend. I didn't edit out any traffic. I didn't need anyone's permission to post it Why do you think that "tourist 500 films" are showing anything but reality?

I've done it on motorbike, motorhomes are a nightmare bullying there way through and on one occasion I ended up off the road, they really need to take more care when it comes to two wheelers

I've done it in cars and a motorhome. Some motorbikes are a nightmare, bullying their way through, thinking that just because they can accelerate fast, it is safe to. Luckily, most motorcyclists are considerate road users and the ones you meet at a place like Applecross are generally experienced riders. Motorhomes, on the other hand, are often driven by people with very little experience of driving such s large vehicle. Many only rented for the week. Perhaps you should tone down your arrogance and turn up your understanding.

@@iainathairydog Iain. I'm a man in my 70s I have driven everything from bikes to heavy goods. I've been over Applecross pass three times. Last time in the shrubbery with a 200kg plus motorbike to drag out. You are reading into what I said that's not there. There is nothing in what I said to take offence at maybe you need to read again what I said without an agenda

Love seeing the view from this footage. Just about to do the NC500 with my parents with their 7m motorhome, although we will have a car as well, would love to do this road in the van, but my mum would be hiding in the loo with those bends plus prob not advisable in July with more traffic on the road.

My wife and I did it by car, we travelled in the opposite direction. We were behind a total eejit, and at the bend showing at 22 mins on this video the dough all stopped his car and got out to take pictures. The video clearly shows an area off the tarmac onto which he could have moved, but he didn't, his car remained partially on the road, I had the put pedal to metal on the inside of the bend.

This route attracts a fair number of idiots. I drove along it many times before it was a 'thing' and there were hardly any idiots on those roads. In those days, it was all locals or foreigners: no English.

Christ sake how noisy is that motorhome why does he start moving forward when people are going by him also spends most of the trip on the grass verge
@iainathairydog
@iainathairydog 11 месяцев назад
The noise was a defective dash (since replaced, over five years ago). And the microphone is right over the engine, a lonf way from the occupants. Not driving on the verges at all. You seemingly don't understand the view is wider than the track. As for moving forward, if you'd ever driven a large vehicle, you'd know that's what makes it easier for the people going the other way: it clears their path.

I was just about to comment exactly what you replied here, having done the trip several times in both directions including towing a motorcycle trailer. If you are a competent driver it is no drama at all but having watched that driver in the red car who turned back I would say they could be a candidate for why people don’t want motorhome to go over the pass, imagine if they were driving one instead of a car.

Bloody motorhomes should be banned from Scotland's roads Take up all the road, most can't drive , or they don't come equipped with reverse gear and locals on the islands hate them.
@iainathairydog
@iainathairydog 3 года назад
Yes, and ban tractors, tourist cars and motorcycles. Then ban everyone who doesn't sponsor an MP. Frankly, as someone who is a native of the Highlands, who lives in a tourist area and who does get a bit fed up of sightseers, I can understand why moronic, xenophobic and economically illiterate views like yours are so common. But that doesn't make them right, or even sensible.

@@iainathairydog If motorhomes were not so big it would not be such a problem, but they are roughly the same width as hgv's but with out the skill of a truck driver. I spend a good bit of my time every year on the western isles and I see first hand the appalling driving of some of these idiots, not all but a good few. Probably it's the people that decide to rent one and then take it onto singal track roads for the first time. Have a good new year.
@iainathairydog
@iainathairydog 3 года назад
@@thegoatfam3633 The problem you are seeing isn't motorhomes. It's hired vehicles that are driven by inexperienced drivers. Motorhomes themselves have no driving skills at all. Perhaps you should focus your xenophobia on hire companies?

@@iainathairydog I loved the video btw. I can see that locals are probably pulling there hair out at busy times and I feel sorry for them! Nc500 is on my bucket list but would do it in Oct to hopefully avoid crowds? wished I had done it before it was recognised as nc500. I do think that upkeep costs of the roads ect needs to be paid for by visitors somehow? Tricky to set up!

@@TheBendalina Depending on the weather, there may be crowds - of midges! However, at that time of year, probably not. The days are getting shorter at that time of the year, though. Remember, the further North you go, the more day length changes with the seasons.

I guess you didn't watch enough of the video to see the several places where I pulled into a passing place to let vehicles overtake. It's interesting that most of the moans about motorhomes on the NC500 are about how they go so slowly and hold traffic up. Guess you can't win sometimes.
