The chewy tapioca pearls, when adding to black tea with fresh milk and flavored syrup, become a refreshing sweet innovation for young adults. From a novelty drink to the popular dessert in the cup, bubble tea originated in East Asia and has been spreading to the rest of the world as an alternative drink to coffee.
The special main ingredient used in the bubbles is tapioca, a starch extracted from the storage roots of the cassava. Cambodia ranks the 10th largest cassava producer globally and this drought-resistant vegetable crop is the economic driver of the country. However, invasive weeds can disrupt the growth of cassava and not only affect the livelihood of small-scale farmers, but also our “black pearls”.
Now agricultural drones, a new type of tool, are lending a hand to "grow" our bubble tea in Cambodia.
