In this tutorial, we learn how to use the Angoff Method (Angoff, 1971) to apply a noncompensatory approach to informing selection decisions. When a noncompensatory approach is applied, applicants cannot compensate for lower scores on one selection tool (e.g., procedure, assessment, test) with higher scores on other selection tools. When a selection tool has a multiple-choice format with correct and incorrect responses, the Angoff Method can be used to set the cutoff scores (i.e., critical scores, cut scores) for the selection tool. In this method, subject matter experts (SMEs) estimate the probability that a minimally qualified applicant would respond correctly to a given item (e.g., question) on the selection tool, and using these estimated probabilities, we can create a cutoff score for the selection tool.
