Awesome! I am a daughter of a concrete masonry and my Dad has since passed. I sure miss him and learned a lot from him with repairs etc and car repairs. So I typically tackle any home job and you have helped tremendously. You are a Godsend. VERY INFORMATIVE and easily understood. You made me feel comfortable that "I can do this". Thank you!

Great video, This is also a part of my work as a restoration technician I have been doing this for over 10 years, just to to be safe if using any type of concrete sealer product it is suggested that the substrate receive an initial light "mist" coat to break the surface tension. This should then be followed immediately by a uniform flood coat which allows just enough material to carry a 4 inch rundown from the contact point. Application should be made in an over-lapping pattern. It’s also important to note that the surface should be clean, free of stains, vegetative growth, and efflorescence, thoroughly sound and in good repair. Any deficiencies should be corrected prior to the application of any type of concrete sealers. And if you are applying any sealer on the new concrete, or concrete repair allow 28 days for the concrete to fully cure and then apply the product for a better result.

Thank you for your very informative video. We had a concrete patio done about 4 months ago and now we are noticing the staining of the leaves on the concrete. We had to use bleach combined with water to get the stains out because nothing else would work. But since the leaves keep falling, the concrete continues to get stained by the leaves. Is it wise to bleach it again now and try to seal it? I am Afraid that leaves will fall again while it’s drying and stain it again. Or should I wait until the spring or next summer? Please help we are new at this!!!

Good series, nicely done. That said, I'd recommend a different application approach, especially if the homeowner is planning on doing a much larger area than what you see here. If you're using a water-based penetrating sealer skip the roller and spray it. You should have a roller but only needed to go over any areas of puddling. A solvent based penetrating sealer is a totally different matter and the necessary tools for using it can get pretty expensive- not your average sprayer for example. You'll need Viton seals incorporated into the sprayer and you're looking at a minimum sprayer cost of about $150.00+ and a respirator protection and now you're looking at at least another $50-65.00 for anything decent in quality including the filters. By and large though, a premium quality water-based Silane-Siloxane penetrating sealer will work beast and easiest. Either way though, make sure you thoroughly clean or have the driveway/sidewalk before applying any sealers. Good luck!

Thanks for this Education. For 2 Months I've been trying to decide what to buy for My basement floor, all I see a lot of is epoxy flooring. I know I don't want that because I can tell it just sits on the concrete. I wanted something that would penetrate the concrete. But I also know that You can't use any product anywhere. And this seems like something that would suit My need. Although Rather Pricey. But Looks promising, So I wanna know, can this product be used indoors? Or Are there any other Siliconate Penetrating Sealers that you can recommend for interior use? Thanks alot.

Great videos. We recently bought a house with pet urine all in garage floor. Had paint removed by sanding down to the cement, cleaned, then Used enzymatic cleaner (anti-icky poo) and poured all over cement floor to treat smells. Now the cement has a strong chemical/urine smell. Needing to seal the floor now but wondering if sealing with siliconate sealer will trap all remaining smells inside or would you suggest a different sealer?? I really don’t care what the cement floor looks like, just want it to smell nice. Thanks.

@SANDRA MUNOZ - For some reason RU-vid won't let me reply to your comment so I'm posting my reply as a separate comment: It should be possible to paint over this sealer. These types of siliconate sealers are commonly used as primers for other sealers. Just to be sure, you may want to contact Vseal and they can tell you if masonry/concrete paint is compatible. Another option you have instead of painting it is to apply an acrylic sealer on top of the Vseal. An acrylic sealer is pretty much just paint so you'll get the same appearance.

Rustem - The mortar used to apply tiles will stick to the concrete that has been sealed. However, I would recommend trying to find out where the moisture is coming from first and addressing the source of the problem. If the water is coming from underneath the concrete, you could have reverse hydrostatic pressure which is pushing water up into the concrete. Trying to stop this with a sealer could be a challenge. My recommendation would be to find out if you can stop the source of the water through drainage - either underneath the concrete or around the perimeter of the concrete. If that's not an economical solution, you'll probably want to use a sealer designed specifically for this application. These are called negative side application sealers. You might check out products from Aquafin like 1K or Mortar-LN.

We used Drylock about 20 years ago and for the past 10 years some of it hasn't held up in certain areas, mainly the lower half of the wall. Can you suggest what product we should use to seal the concrete from the seepage we now need to address before it gets worse, when there is a lot of rain or a quick thaw of snow? Also we realize we need to clean and prep the wall, but we won't be able to get all the Drylock off. Are we stuck using Drylock again? If so can we go over the old Drylock with the new Drylock?

I have an acid stained, sealed, concrete floor that was installed 2 years ago in a restaurant. In the last 6 months, the sealer has become sticky and you can feel it when you walk on the floor. Do I need to seal it again and if so, do I need to strip off the old sealer? Can I just buff it or wax it to get rid of the stickiness? I think that the old sealer was water based.

@ToolboxDIY

Paint itself will act as a sealer although not a great one. Depending on the paint type used, you may be able to just use that. However, a penetrating sealer can go on first and then you can paint. If you're staining, you'll want to stain and then seal. "Stains" come in all types though so I would check with the manufacturer. Heavily pigmented stains may act more like a paint and block some of the sealer.

Thanks for the easy to understand videos on sealing concrete. We live in the High country in the South Island of New Zealand with cold winters (-5 to -20 degrees centigrade). We have a patio outside made up of 8 concrete slabs (2.8m by 1.5m) each surrounded by 200mm by 200mm macrocarpa timber. A small gap has appeared as the concrete dried between the slab and the macrocarpa that I am concerned will allow water to lie in and turn to ice, thus causing some degradation in the slabs. Do you have any suggestions as to how I seal this gap. I plan to use a siliconate sealer but do not want this to discolour compared to the slabs. Also do you know whether I can use the sealer on the macrocarpa? Thanks in anticipation
@ToolboxDIY
@ToolboxDIY 6 лет назад
You're definitely thinking about this right way. That gap between the slab and timbers could cause problems if it isn't filled or sealed. If the gap is larger than 1.5mm, I would put a closed cell backer rod in the gap then seal it with an elastomeric polyurethane sealant. I don't know what's available in NZ but here in the states we use something like Masterseal NP-1. After you close up the gap with the sealant, then apply the concrete sealer to the slab. The concrete sealer would not be suitable for sealing those timbers. If you want to keep the natural look of the timbers, I would recommend some sort of UV resistant timber oil. This requires yearly application. You could go for a film forming finish on the timbers like a marine varnish, but I'll be honest I don't know anything about macrocarpa so I can't provide any recommendations on whether this would be suitable or not. You might try calling a macrocarpa supplier and ask them what they recommend. Good luck!

@ToolboxDIY
@ToolboxDIY 5 лет назад
I would probably go with a non-yellowing acrylic sealer for this application. It will need to be reapplied after a few years, but it will hold up to pool chemicals a little better than a penetrating sealer. It will also darken the concrete or as the sealer manufacturer's would say "enhance the appearance."

Hey Chris, Thanks for the video. I make stepping stones with scrap stained glass pieces forming a mosaic on the top that I use in garden areas. The stones are made by placing the glass in the bottom of a mold and pouring concrete over the glass, waiting for the the concrete to dry and then flipping the mold to pop the stone out. Every attempt is made to get the concrete in the space between the glass pieces to secure them in place. The stepping stones get low traffic but are exposed to SW Colorado weather hot summers and snowy winters. I'm looking for a sealer that will help keep the cement around the glass from deteriorating causing the glass pieces to come loose. An epoxy would be ideal to create a top surface but don't want discoloration from the weather. You also mentioned in this video that this outdoor sealer in your project will etch the glass. I'm guessing that may not be best for a steppingstone with glass in the surface. Help... can you recommend a product for my project?

I've been doing alot of read-up and I find that Concrete Sealers USA Seems to be the only one that makes this Waterbased Siliconate Sealer. I went on their Website I find they actually have other models with different chemistries. I think I like the PS104 Better. I also like that they clearly advertised the VOC Content as 0g/l... However, I have come across Radonseal Lastiseal which Makes penetrating Concrete Sealers too, Although their's seem to be Solvent Based Polymer/Polyester/Polyurethane (On amazon they called it "Waterborne" whatever that means. Anyway, I am worried about the VOC which is what I'm combating in My house. They call theirs "Low VOC" and "No Offensive Odors". Not Sure I want that. However they have a 15Year Warranty. Something I haven't been able to find on Concrete Sealers Website or anywhere speaking to the Warranty Of Their "PS" Sealer Product Lines. And I don't think you mentioned that either.

I want to fill the cracks in my expansion joints. I also have a very fine, hairline surface crack that I'd like to address. Should I do this before or after sealing with a water-based siliconate? Thanks for a great video series.

Fill the cracks first. On small cracks, I've had good luck with a product by Roadware called Concrete Mender. It's pricey, but has held up very well.
