Do you mind saying what the rubber black end pieces are and where they were found? As well as the metal pipes pieces? I’ve built a decent turner myself but I’m not thrilled with the football on the PVC. I just feel like as if it’s sturdy enough.
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
@VioletDoodlesBoutique 5 лет назад
The black on the ends of the pipe are actually tesa tape. It is a soft tape meant for wiring. It was just what we had on hand. We used it to make the PVC fit a little tighter on the pipe but still easy to get it on and off. You can find it on amazon. The pipe is a stainless steel pipe that we bought and had cut down to our specs. He is an engineer and designs machines for a living. It is definitely sturdy and hardy.

Lou Bascelli Well, it was custom made by my engineering husband. I just told him what I wanted and he went with it. It’s chain driven, has one motor meant for a 3D printer, and turns 5 at a time. I had an MDF body that I might paint some day.

After I sand my cups, I've noticed little imperfections in my epoxy. Like little clear bumps- they look like bubbles but aren't because they don't pop after applying heat. After you wet sanded it what did you use to dry it? a paper towel? microfiber towel?
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
@VioletDoodlesBoutique 5 лет назад
It might still be bubbles, you can try a torch too but be careful not to burn it. I usually use paper towels but coffee filters work better.

Thank you for such a detailed video. I love your work and you are one of the ONLY tumbler makers that stresses the importance of PPE while working with epoxy. I have a quick question: one of the reasons I don’t tape off is because I can’t get my epoxy line smooth enough to my liking. You say that you remove the tape after 20 mins?? How does your epoxy not run down past your line after you remove the tape? Whenever I try, my epoxy is still very flowy and the epoxy drags the glitter down with it, making an ugly uneven line- not smooth at all.
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
@VioletDoodlesBoutique 4 года назад
Every epoxy is different. You may need to let it spin longer. I have found my sweet spot between 20 and 60 minutes. Then to get the smooth line, I wipe it with a baby wipe.
@carls418
@carls418 4 года назад
HII! Thank you so much for this video. I don’t know if you will see this or not but if I don’t have a fancy turner like yours what should I do? Just keep turning it with my hand for 20 minutes??
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
@VioletDoodlesBoutique 4 года назад
You can hand turn but its a lot longer than 20 minutes. Search hand turnining. Minderella has a tutorial on how to do it. You can get smaller turners on Etsy, Amazon, and even Hobby Lobby now. The black no-name one from Hobby Lobby is around $30ish and I have 3 that I like. Stay away from the Spin It brand- junk junk junk.

@VioletDoodlesBoutique
@VioletDoodlesBoutique 4 года назад
I usually do mine overnight. If I am in a hurry and trying to load up turners as fast as I can, I will turn for 6 hours and them set it to the side. You have to be careful though, it will still be soft and can leave finger prints (ask me how I know, lol). If you do it too early, the epoxy can slowly run down and create a hump.

@VioletDoodlesBoutique
@VioletDoodlesBoutique 3 года назад
That is a common issue. It could be due to several factors. If it is over a chunky glitter, spray seal it first and that will help. You can go over it again and it should be more evenly covered. Sand after two coats and wash well with Dawn. Then coat again. Good luck.

Your epoxy looks amazing. I’m struggling with mini craters come morning after applying my epoxy. I think I have figured out that it’s from bubbles and maybe over working it on the cup. I tried a heat gun and still got a few small craters. Do you warm your epoxy at all or keep your room at a certain temp? I’ve tried warm (over 70) and cooler (under 65), it seemed to thin when it was warmer, but I’ve read everywhere warmer is better lol. Any suggestions would be amazing!!!
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
@VioletDoodlesBoutique 5 лет назад
Those dimples could be from several factors: temp, amount of epoxy used, oils from handling, the glitter itself, bubbles... I don't warm mine except for the heat gun after applied but I do keep my room warm. Here are my steps: *prep cup- sand and wash with dawn *sometimes basecoat *glitter *seal glitter for chunky or complicated designs *epoxy 1 or 2 times *lightly sand and wash with dawn *decal *wash with dawn again- I never skip this step! *epoxy final coat *wait 3 days and clean cup well with (bare stainless with acetone) and then whole cup with dawn I hope this helps. Let me know! Good luck!

My husband made my turner. Check Etsy for small businesses that make them. Michaels just started carrying a single. I will do a review on it soon. Amazon also has some.

I would like to more about your turning station for your cups. Where did you get it?

I don't have a lot of the details. My husband made it for me. I have answered a few questions in the comments of this video if you want to scroll through. But I was pretty hands off. I just told him how I wanted it and he came through.

2 questions: 1. Are you able to substitute a hair dryer for the heater? 2. Is the vinyl on the other cup to your right underneath the epoxy?
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
@VioletDoodlesBoutique 5 лет назад
I am afraid the hair dryer would blow too hard and not have the heat it needs. Heat guns don't blow very forcefully and get a lot hotter. You can also use a mini torch. All of my vinyl is sealed under epoxy.

Instead of using your hands can you use like a paint brush cause I want to try this but I feel like if I do it, it won’t be smooth if I use my fingers
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
@VioletDoodlesBoutique 4 года назад
You can use a paint brush or foam brush but they would be single use and can incorporate bubbles. You can also use a silicone makeup spatula and apply it with that but I find those to be more work than just using my hands. The epoxy is self-leveling, so if you get it on the cup as even as you can it will settle and smooth out on its own.

I found a rough spot on one spot of my cup after my second coat of epoxy. How can I fix this?
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
@VioletDoodlesBoutique 4 года назад
If it's just a small spot, you can sand it smooth. If it's a patch of glitter that isn't coated, recoat before sanding.

I wonder if it would be possible to thermal paint those cups, and the encapsulate with the epoxy. Just thinking. lol How much are your cups? I love the pink & Orange.
@VioletDoodlesBoutique

Yes! I haven't done it personally but I have seen them. I have done UV color changing cups. So many possibilities! I am closed for custom orders until after the holidays but you can order by sending me a message through my socials or email angie@violetdoodlesboutique.com. Thank you!!

Do I have the seal the glitter with anything before going in with my first layer of epoxy?
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
@VioletDoodlesBoutique 3 года назад
It depends on what you're doing. Two color ombres, I don't seal. When I do seal, I use a clear gloss spray.

I apply vinyl after a smooth coat of epoxy, usually after 1 or 2 coats.

If I don't have turntables, what's an alternative?
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
@VioletDoodlesBoutique 4 года назад
You can hand turn if you have time and patience or buy a turner. This one from Amazon isn't bad (aff link) amzn.to/2VPIjWH If you want to try hand turning, Minderella has a tutorial on it. Search for her channel.

Im a New subscriber today!! Can you or have you did a video on sanding the glitter?
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
@VioletDoodlesBoutique 4 года назад
Thanks for the sub! You will want to hold off sanding until epoxy. I sand after the 2nd coat of epoxy. If you sand the glitter, you will end up sanding the color right off the flake.

Can the epoxy method be used on acrylic tumblers or only stainless steel?
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
@VioletDoodlesBoutique 5 лет назад
I have done it on glass and stainless. It can be done on acrylic but I have not done it. If it can flex very much, the epoxy can crack or separate from the base and create problems.

So the process is: MP, glitter then let dry. Another layer of MP and glitter and let dry. Then apply the epoxy resin and done?
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
@VioletDoodlesBoutique 4 года назад
Yes, you may have to do two coats of epoxy to have a smooth finish but that is the basic idea. If you are adding vinyl, do it after a smooth coat of epoxy and then seal it again.

What causes fish eyes? How do you fix them? Also, do you mod lodge under all of your glitter it fo you ever epoxy under?
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
@VioletDoodlesBoutique 4 года назад
Fisheyes are caused by debris or residue that hasn't been cleaned off.If you already have them, lightly sand your cup and wash it WELL with Dawn. Dry it with a coffee filter or microfiber towel and reepoxy. I use MP and epoxy to apply glitter. It depends on the technique I am working on.
