How to successfully apply for your first Physiotherapy job. After successfully completing the application and interview process and getting my first Band 5 Physio job I have been asked by many for advice and tips on applying. This video is my personal take on applying for a Band 5 Physiotherapy job. Please do share with other students including other Allied Health Professionals. Brilliant! I was interviewed yesterday by Plymouth trust where there was assessment part as well, unfortunately it wasn't gone well. To be honest I wasn't well prepared for it because I wasn't about practical exam. I wish I could have watched it earlier, it was same interview you're talking about ABG's and quite memorable information about respiratory part. I traveled all the way from Manchester to get this surprise.

It could be a million different things. As an example… Who are you going to see first and what’s your clinical reasoning? - Patient needing Physio assessment for discharge. - Deteriorating chest patient on 15L NRB - Day 1 THR who’s not been seen by Physio - Patient who has an exacerbation of COPD maintaining sats but not able to clear secretions. - Nurses call as patient needs to get out of bed.

Hi , i am an egyptian physiotherapist applying for rotational post at the NHS,one of the essential person specifications ,was broad experience as student placement, I detailed that i rotated on a 2 month basis across the different disciplines of msk, pediatric, icu and internal, gynacological and obstetrics,neurology,burn and surgery , would that be a sufficient answer with examples or not?? Hi James, I have applied for b-3 physio assistant job however, I did bachelor's in physiotherapy. I got 2 physio assistant job interview in NHS. But unfortunately, couldn't clear. I took feedback from them. They told my positive side- confident, friendly, smart and most of answer I questioned was good but 2-3 questions I couldn't attempt well. Could you give me advice please?

Hi James, how old were you when you started the degree? I'm a bit older now and was thinking I've left it too late. Was your class mostly people straight out of 6th form or was it a mixed bunch of ages?

Really mixed bunch. I was 33 when I started the degree. I couldn’t express more that it’s never too late and you’re never too old! If you want to do it the go for it 😃🙌

@You go for it!! I started at 28 (now about to graduate), it was scary but I'm soooo happy I went for it! There's quite a few older people on my course and we really support each other.

CPD doesn’t need to be certificated. It far more important to have documented what you learnt and who it’s helped develop your practice.

Just wanted to ask you that during chest physiotherapy session, yankeur suction,guedel and suction catheters are to be inserted/used by band 5,6 or 7physiotherapists(to clear oral secretions and stimulate cough)or they don’t fall under physiotherapist’s duty and done by a nurse? Are therapists only responsible for chest physiotherapy such as percussion or any other treatment is also required?

They usually do fall into a Physiotherapist scope for practice. You would usually get signed off on those competencies first though.

If you’re able to register with the HCPC as a Physiotherapist then you’ll be able to apply for a band 5 position 👍

You would need to contact the NHS trust that you’re applying to. If you get HCPC registered then I don’t see why you couldn’t apply for a band 6 but worth checking. Best of luck

My recommendation is an NHS hospital. But people do have varying opinions on this.

Hi James I wanted to know hoe does it work when you move up the bands and how long does it take moving up the bands once you are a physio? Also getting into a private clinic like isokinetic how can you get a placement as a young new physio, do they only want physio's with experience ?

Hi Damian, Every trust will have slightly different processes but essentially as a newly qualified band 5 there’s a mountain of skills and knowledge to gain. I didn’t realise how much ali didn’t know until I started my rotations. It’s great as you get to develop so much. This will take around 2 year to gain experience in neuro, respiratory and MSK. These are key areas that give you a rounded skill set. At that point you’ll also have more of a balanced idea of what you’d want to specialise in and you can the. apply for band 6 jobs. Here you become senior and will take on more advanced skills and support band 5 in their development. Moving in to a private clinic as a newly qualified physio is possible but not often done as there are so many things to experience before seeing patients who may arrive at your door never having seen a GP or health professional. However some private practices do take newly qualified physios and offer a supervision programme etc.

I was very interested in the work they do in some private clinics like isokinetic but I see maybe first I need some experience in the real world first

I believe it means you’re more likely to recognise and appreciate other comirbidities in patients that influence there recovery. You can also be far more rounded in your knowledge of health conditions.
