Applying sound deadening material to my Citroen C1

In today’s video, I’m installing some sound deadening material. I’ve not long gotten back from the City Bug Club Highland Rally and I noticed during the event that the interior of the car is loud! Driving 1064 miles in total over 5 days in a car with very little OEM sound deadening material from the factory isn’t fun, so I decided to do something about that.
First step is to remove the interior, so disconnect the battery and remove the front seats, so you don’t accidentally set off the air bags. As the rear seats were already out of the car from the rally, I haven’t showed how to remove or install these, but it really is quite simple and intuitive. Out with the plastic trim pieces that are in the way and then out with the carpet. Once everything was out, I could then make a start on cleaning and preparing the floor surface, so that it is ready to have the sound deadening material applied. For that, I used some blue shop towels and a gallon tub of panel prep wipe to remove the dirt and degrease the surface, which seemed to have worked well. I then set about laying AliExpress’ finest quality sound deadening material to the floor, using a craft knife and a roller. I made sure that I cut around the rubber bungs in the floor, so that if I ever need to drain water from the inside of the car (and we all know how badly they leak!), I’ve still got that option.
Once that was done, I set about re-installing the interior trim pieces of the car in the reverse order from which they were removed. I did notice that the bolts holding my under-seat subwoofer down to the floor are no longer long enough, so I’ve had to order some more suitable bolts - I’ll install those off camera another time. I then went about installing the sound deadening material into the boot area, with which I had help when Liz came home from work. Once all this was installed, I re-fitted all of the items in the boot, like the spare wheel, jack, plastic floor and carpet, then considered the job done.
After having driven the car approximately 250 miles to Modified Nationals 2023 at Lincolnshire showground and back, I can confirm that the car is considerably quieter on the inside than it was previously. I realise that using a better quality sound deadening material would have provided better results, but considering the car’s market value and the amount of miles I put on the car each year, I couldn’t justify the extra, not insignificant, cost for better quality product. All in all, a very successful, if not laborious task completed in about 10 hours. If I were to do this again, I’d definitely budget two days for this job, but I had to get it all done in one day because of weather restrictions.

I'm not going to sound-proof, but the dismantling of the interior was beneficial for me. I will do it in the summer because I had a pool in my car.

We’ve all been there! I fitted an after market seal kit from a company called X8R, I did a video about it not long back, and it’s worked an absolute treat. If you choose to get yourself a kit, use discount code DABDIY20 for 20% off.

Love these tinkering videos, and your honest answers to the effect they've had. If I could go back pre-covid I'd have picked one of these cars up cheap and kept it as a run around to work and back. They look a lot of fun to keep coming back to and doing the work to keep them on the road. Thanks for the videos.

They’re great fun, you’re right! I was really lucky to pick one up when I did.

i would have painted a additional anti rust layer before sticking anything onto the metal. Any rust underneath you now won´t see.

Really nice vid !! I have the same car and I am doing the insulation. I am waiting to see you putting the big stuff on the floor because I am wondering if you can stil put together all the carpets back in after adding thickness on the floor ! Sorry for my aproximativ english, I am french.

I don’t think I’m going to bother with the thicker stuff, to be honest. The silver pieces in this video have produced a decent amount of sound deadening, so I think I’m going to stick with that. At some point, I’ll also be adding it to the doors, walls and roof.

The floor is a little bit higher? Did you have any problems?
@DABDIY
@DABDIY 2 дня назад
No problems at all. Just make sure you keep the mounting holes free, everything goes in just fine.

Does it also help with insulation at least a bit? Logically yes but to what extent? I'm thinking of doing this in my Aygo in the summer.

I don’t know tbh. I never really considered the insulating properties of the sound deadening material.

Did it actually make any difference to sound suppression?
@DABDIY
@DABDIY 2 месяца назад
It did, yes. It would have made more of a difference if I’d used better quality material, but it’s worth doing. My next step would be to do the rear quarter walls, doors and roof.

Has it made a noticeable difference. C1’s are quite noisy especially when you are used to a car with much more sound deadening.
@DABDIY
@DABDIY 10 месяцев назад
It’s been noticeable, yeah. Granted the difference could have been more noticeable if I’d have used better material, but still, it’s noticeable. I intend on doing the walls, doors and roof at some point too.

@@DABDIYcan you tell me roughly how many of those sheets you used? I have done the front doors so far.
@DABDIY
@DABDIY 10 месяцев назад
I haven’t a clue mate, I didn’t count. If I were to guess, I’d say approximately 30 sheets.

Start with the doors, hood, back lid, roof (yes, important), the panel that covers the wheel wells, the C column. Everything what sounds tinny. Also, remove the plastic liners in the wheel arches and look for tinny sounding surfaces behind. Just use your naked fingers to knock on all surfaces. That’s how you find those who need treatment. I didn’t put any butyl mat on the floor like in the video, because the metal surfaces there are too massive for the mats to make a difference. I finished the job yesterday and the vibration noise is gone. Now I mostly hear the engine and the exhaust.

@philwxwlr481 I intend on doing a lot of what you said in the spring when the weather starts to behave.

Giggled a bit when seen long red hair and green finger nails😅. On a scale fron 0 to 10 how much did this helped with the noise?
@DABDIY
@DABDIY 6 месяцев назад
Red and green is a fantastic combination lol. In that scale, I’d give it about 6.5-7 ish. If I’d have used a good quality material rather than aliexpress’ finest, that number would be much higher.

I didn’t see the point. I’m not using high quality materials, so what does it matter? Aliexpress product at its finest 😅
