Appreciating My Dad By Way of Clannad

I know-it's not a good look to be defending people who've given their child debilitating shoulder injuries. Naoyuki Okazaki has plenty of faults. But, one thing I can't fault him for, and perhaps I'm in the minority for this, is taking on massive responsibility in spite of his faults.
After they part, Okazaki wonders if his father had a good life, working and sacrificing for a "worthless" son like him. If he's anything like my dad, I'm confident in saying that the answer is this-he probably feels like he did.

I came across this blog after I had finished the video, but it's filled with great Clannad analysis, including a page on Naoyuki Okazaki: kuranadonodaika...

What's important is that he and his child are now finally in good terms. Naoyuki was a shitty dad. But we need to realize that not all adults are this perfect role model like we used to see them when we were younger. They're human. They have their own demons, their own limitations, their bad sides, and their good sides. What is important is that, our fathers tried their best to give us the best life. So Happy Fathers Day to all dads. This is a really good Fathers Day video

The problem is that, some of them don't try their best. Though Naoyuki did.

I think you missed the literal point. Naoyuki was not a bad father, tomoya literally says that to naoyukis mom “he had his faults and issues, but he was a wonderful father “. The issue here was tomoya forgetting everything and having misconceptions based off his current misbelief that due to naoyuki becoming an unemployed drunk who injured him during an argument, he was a bad father. Everything naoyuki did was for tomoya, he sacrificed his life for tomoya and eventually ended up where he was because of having to lose everything. The story is about tomoya coming to terms with that and realising that he acted far worse then naoyuki, he abandoned his daughter (when naoyuki never did) and he curled himself into a ball of self pity letting ushios grandparents suffer the responsibility. Naoyuki was a great father and he was the inspiration for tomoya once he realised that fact

He wasn't shitty. He was a loving, broken shell of a man who lost himself trying to raise a son in a world where he thought nothing but his son's good welfare.

Tomoya hating his father throughout the majority of the series only then to end up becoming what he hated so much, hits SO HARD. Clannad After Story is a truly life changing experience if you let yourself connect and empathise with its characters. I know it did mine! :)

I finally found the perfect way to describe it: "It's not justifiable, but understandable"

Naoyuki was a bad dad, but the thing was that he learned and grew and tried to make up for what he did. Tomoya was the same, and realizing that he had turned out the same way pushed him to reconnect with his daughter and reconcile with his father. It's a common theme in the season trilogy, and especially in CLANNAD, its conclusion: family members who are hurtful and who alienate the people they're supposed to love can grow and change. Not in an "if I endure this, one day they'll wake up and be better" way; the focus is on them realizing they're wrong and choosing to change.

Never once before that I've ever seen an anime that can describe my dad this accurately. Just like Naoyuki, my dad is a real busy breadwinner. He works about 10-12 hours a day and rarely gets a break even during weekends (yep he goes to work in Saturday and Sunday too), so the only times I can talk with him is during dinner or before sleep time. He also used to go to a lot of after-work drinking parties, not because he wanted to, he's forced to (kinda like the work ethic in Japan). Sometimes his boss made him drink so much that he went home in a piss ass drunk status, throwing up every 10-15 minutes and had to sleep in the living room so that he wouldn't bother me and my mom. Now he's living with high liver enzyme rates and gout in his foot from all those pointless drinking parties. I hated him at first, but after all he's just trying to sustain his job to keep my family a stable life. Despite going through that much stress at work every day, he would never throw any rants at me when I do things wrong or choke on my tests and he'll always support my dreams or my own decisions at life. Now i really owe him a lot for everything he's done for a loser who takes everything for granted like me. I love you dad. (I'm writing this in tears. No joke)

Tomoya became what he never wanted to become. But in the end, he realized that what he did for years, his father never did. And thats the best irony out of all this

Likewise on the other hand, Sanae Furukawa's shift in roles to look after Ushio, gave me a new found respect for her as a character. She epitomizes the meaning of what it is to be a good mother. Providing the opportunity for Tomoya Okazaki to resume his role as a father when he is ready. She respects Tomoya's decision and gives him space. While this respect of Tomoya isn't explored in Clannad, I think she is an unsung hero of the series.

Nagisas parents are both parental heavweights. The sheer amount of strength and support they are able to give and continue smiling despite the traumatic things that happen to them is inspiring.

I watched all of Clannad about a month ago, and nothing has made me cry more than the field scene. I found most of the depressing moments to be predictable, so I wasn't as affected by them, but that scene in particular hit me like a truck. I agree that there are a lot of problems with Clannad, but something is truly special if it can absolutely demolish me like this show did.
@VashdaCrash
@VashdaCrash 3 года назад
I usually don't get very emotional with the depressing moments in media, sometimes I get angry at them for being manipulative, but what really gets me is when something happens to change the outlook of a character for the better. Just like that scene (wich I never watched btw lol).

i think when a story can be predictable and still make you feel the gut punch of emotions, its succeeded. i had a moment in episode 12 i think of violet evergarden, the mother and her daughter. it was so obvious and easy to see what was going to happen and the final outcome of it, but i still managed to cry, one of the hardest ive ever cried.

i had a moment in clannad where it made me feel unnerving and sick. not that the material itself was but how close it resonated to the pain i had. i watched clannad and the after story after failing my first year of college, with a 50k debt and mental health issues and more i struggled to move forward. seeing the early part with the couple dealing with first apartment life oddly hurt me. i cant explain why but it hurt in such a way where i had to stop bingeing the show and only came back a few weeks later. now ita been a few years, im almost 23 instead of almost 19 and im still lost without a job but i have so much more stability in my own self. i probably didnt describe the feeling well enough, but i wanted to share how even though the show made me ball my eyes out multiple times, i seemingly had moments of suffering from nothing more than an early couple's life and work

Honestly, the parental moments hit me the hardest throughout the whole of Clannad. Just seeing the immense pain Tomozakis dad was strung through and how, not 100% successful, tried his best to raise him. And how literally no one was there to support him. Just really glad at the end he found peace and was going back to the person who never lost faith in him.

Don't know how to react to the "crybait" label when Clannad is the ONLY media (anime, games, movie) to make be ball my eyes out. Tomoya's dad scene was 1 of the 3 scenes that crushed me in the anime. Could see a lot of myself in that state, in that my own stupidity hurt my parents, who have been nothing but the best to me. It's astonishing how well that scene was build up and executed, so talented anime production must have gone into it. Happy Father's Day to all!

after story is probably my favorite anime of all time, and one of my favorite parts of it has always been its musings on fatherhood. i think you really hit the nail on the head here. one thing that i've always said about what tomoya did in the aftermath of ushio's birth - of course it wasn't the "right" choice to make, but i can't sit here and say with certainty that i wouldn't have done the same thing. the characters in clannad are so...human. and that means they make painfully human mistakes. also, i've always had a strained relationship with my dad. seeing tomoya realize that he has almost become his own father, the person he hated most, and also realizing that his dad gave up on everything in order to raise him and he is *not* doing the same for ushio at the moment, just....destroyed me. i think that clannad is so much more than crybait. it's a window into the most painful realities of adulthood, and a very careful, tender story about grief and parenthood. and yeah maybe i teared up a bit at the end of this video, i'm a big sap what can i say. happy father's day to all the dads out there who do their best to provide for their families.

Thanks, even though the video was on a completely diffrent topic then what I'm dealing with rn it gave me hope and a push to go further. To take a path that might leave a scar instead of taking a passive approch. I'm holding on a rewatch of Clannad and Hyouka for a while now, always having diffrent stuff to do. The video just reminded me of why I thoroughly love this show.

I don't have a good relationship ship with my father. He worked incredibly hard and provided so well for all of us. Cried so hard when tomoya realizes this for his own father after all the stuff he goes through in his show. I've never felt such an emotion through a show and vow to build a better relationship with my father after this. This show is on another level with the topics it covers and how carefully it handles it.
