I think I might just be packing that Porsche and taking off in that for the weekend. Nice one Henry.

A few years ago, my wife and I were on a flight to Orlando and I had my camera bag in the overhead above us. As we were beginning to deplane, I noticed that the woman who had been seated in front of me was leaving with a bag that looked a lot like mine. Since my bag did not closely resemble typical carryon bags, I quickly checked overhead and realized she was taking off with my camera gear. I had to chase her down well into the terminal before I was finally able to recover my bag. From her reaction, when I finally caught up with her, I could not tell if it was an innocent mistake, or, if she had more larcenous intentions.

Just realized you're both into photography and into kiting!! Found your review because I'm trying to get my slingshot travel craft foil into a single bag with all my gear.... your NAS / 10gbe videos are what pushed me in the direction of a 10gbe setup (mac mini plus owc thunderbays). Thanks for the great videos.

Like the Pelican case and remember your prior video on that. Thinking of Costa Rica where carry-on limit is 10lbs on the domestic leg and you’re nearly there empty. Just wondering if you buy an extra seat or gate check it? Or it stays home? Thanks, as always, for another great video.

We'll discuss that one as it approaches. We'll definitely have to be weight conscious, have good insurance coverage and check the pelicans. I had to gate check mine with a tsa lock yesterday from Fort worth to daytona. (small plane). It was fine of course. :)

Also thinking about Costa Rica like Carl below. The Osprey 120 measurements are 70", while most major airlines limit is 62", the 90L Osprey is just at 62". Sansa airlines (Costa Rica in-country airlines) check baggage limit is 40". So any problems with oversized bags beyond having to pay more, especially with the smaller regional airlines? The Osprey otherwise looks like a great way to get everything where you are going. Hope you are having a great time out on the east coast!!!

Great advise. I do off road motorcycling and add helmet boots, pants and jacket- you have to then go commando to keep it under 50lbs. Love southwest for 2 bags free.

The Transporter looks like a great solution. A couple of years ago, I bought L L Bean’s extra large Approach Gear Bag. It too has been great. 88 liters with zippers that allow access to either side or opening like a clamshell. I put clothes in one side and checkable photo gear (lens hoods, etc) in the other.

Flying back to Oregon from Hong Kong next month and need a bigger bag to carry light stands and tripods I've acquired over here. This looks like it would fit the bill perfectly. I appreciate the information. As always a well reasoned, informative gear review, without a bunch of fluff. Thanks Hudson.

This Osprey 102L is THE BAG. Imagine with some cheap insert with zip in it, and your tripod ..you can go everywhere and with the wheels !! In most of the cases ( if its not winter or moutain escalation where you need a backpack ) this is the perfect solution to save you from a back pain. Osprey Sojourn 80 seems also a good choice also having the possibility to use it as a backpack and its 80L.

My gear lives in Pelican cases. I off load whatever gear I need into an appropriate bag. For travel I take one light weight large hard shell roller suitcase for personal stuff which gets checked and a smaller light weight hard shell roller suitcase for photo gear which goes on the plane. I take as large a tripod as will fit in my large suitcase which happens to be 24" folded. I tried small travel tripods but I actually had one with camera and lens and my bag hanging on it raise up on two legs in a strong wind and almost blow over. The smaller suitcase has whatever bag will be appropriate for the trip with my gear in it. So, my gear is protected by a soft camera bag and a hard shell case. On smaller airlines my photo gear suitcase has to be gate checked. But, I don't worry about it since my gear is double bagged, so to speak. More stealthy too, since it looks like an ordinary suitcase.

I'm making final preparations for a long trip...probably lots of people are lol... and although I'll be in my trailer I thought there might be some ideas that would work for my scenario as well as flights. btw new video up today on my channel made entirely with my Z6ii...my first time messing around with 120p and slow motion....pleasantly happy with the results.... One of our favorite trips was Banff / Lake Louise. Summer 2003 we were there - and I was shooting with a Nikon Coolpix 5700.... WOOHOO!!!! Yet some of my favorite pictures were taken there with that camera... I actually bought an $89 tripod to use for some of my pictures. After that the D70 was such a dream to use... (Where does the time go)?

Great ideas for gear but I kept waiting to see how/where you carry personal items, like your clothes and shoes etc. Two checked bags? Or maybe you just wear the same thing everyday?!?!? :)
@HudsonHenryPhoto
@HudsonHenryPhoto 3 года назад
They usually fit in the gear bag. I don't take but a few performance layers and plenty of socks and underwear. :) This is a family kite + photo trip though. There's a 40# kitresurfboard bag with two boards, two 45# ll bean rollers of kites and kite gear, my 45# roller of camera gear and clothes and Stacey, Pike and peppers 45# Patagonia 100L rolling duffle (I love that bag, but it's too short for a serious tripod and way expensive at full price). That's all just the checked bags. The kids and I roll our toys on and Stacey totes snacks for the crew. :)

Hey Hudson -- and maybe another ATS where you talked about the Pelican at least briefly you cover this - but - where do you pack your laptop? I purchased (still unused) the Think Tank Photo StreetWalker Rolling Backpack V2.0. It does have a place for a laptop (not large) - though certainly lacks a lot that Pelican offers in terms of reliable / safe carriage. Great post! Love the informal format of these too :)

@@yosemitesam5662 with my usual airline company it would definitely be an issue. I checked a 65” bag last time I flew and they immediately had a doubt and almost charged me 100$ extra. I got lucky and probably won’t bring this bag anymore for air travel. Thinking of buying the Osprey Transporter 90 or The North Face Rolling Thunder 30. What I like about the Osprey is the quality zippers.

Do you wear the same clothes for the entire trip? What about outerwear, boots, etc.? Where does all that go? Do you check a second bag?
@HudsonHenryPhoto
@HudsonHenryPhoto Год назад
On adventure trips a couple pairs of Patagonia shorts, pants, baselayer shirts, ultra compressable puffy layered insulation, a torrent shell rain jacket (10oz), three pairs of darn tough socks and saxx underwear. Wear the hiking shoes, pack the flip flops. It all weighs about 5 pounds in roller bag in sea to summit stuff sacks. Everything washes in a sink and dries in an hour. I'm good for months with that kit even in the wilderness. Nothing whatsoever cotton or absorbant. Simple.
@2Gandalf1
@2Gandalf1 Год назад
@@HudsonHenryPhoto I use the same strategy, no natural fibers. All wash in the sink, etc. There are times I have to bring knee high muck boots and or additional layers depending on how many climates I am traveling through. Usually between 5 and 10 lbs. In this case weight is not the big issue, but bulk, especially if I have to bring muck boots.

Iʻm trying to decide between the Shimoda Explore 30 V2 backpack and the PGYTech Onemo 30L backpack. What are your thoughts? I need a bag to carry my Canon R6, 24-70 and 70-200mm lenses and assorted accessories while traveling (city walks in Europe) and especially meet the airlines requirements for carry on. Your comments would be really appreciated.

Okay, nice of you to throw a curve ball into the mix. I hadnʻt even heard of the NYA-EVO company. From the many RU-vid reviews, it certainly seems like this line of bags is a serious contender! Iʻm ordering the 36 and hope it isnʻt too big for the everyday walks in the towns and villages in Italy and Greece (plan to visit there this September) as well as conforming to those smaller airlines carry-on requirements. Mahalo for your response and advice.

If you travel in the third world your checked luggage will get robbed sooner or later. My bag was rifled in Santiago, but they only got a raincoat and some prescription sunglasses. My tripod legs were fastened to the bag's metal spine with a padded hose clamp, and the head was in my carry-on.

@@HudsonHenryPhoto Congrats on your good luck! On another trip, I re-equipped one of the pro photogs with cold weather gear after his checked luggage was stolen en route to Punta Arenas. My luggage was temporarily lost so I had bought substitute gear in the Zona Franca ... I agree that "third world" is obsolete terminology, but there is a definite lack of professionalism on LATAM flights.
@HudsonHenryPhoto
@HudsonHenryPhoto 3 года назад
Hmmm, my last Latam flight to PA made me wish US airlines were half as comfortable and well run. Most international flights make me feel that way though. I checked three 25 kilo bags of gear for the workshop I was running and neither my assistant, the 12 participants nor I had any issues with luggage. Yours is the first negative review I've heard.

Are you ever concerned about losing something of value when the TSA people decide to open your checked bag for a closer look? Could you prove what had been in the bag and is now missing? Maybe this is a non-issue, I don't know, but I was told not to check anything of real value like camera bodies and lenses. Just wondering what your opinion and experience is. Thank you.

Great looking bag Hudson. Thank you for the interesting vid. I looked at this bag a short while ago (I think it was this one that is) but I decided against it. Here is the reason... I see a design fault though and this is that the two outside clip/fasteners do not seem to go around the whole of the bag - I suspect therefore that the stitching will fail sooner or later. For the price of this bag this is a serious fault indeed IMHO. As a bonus, if they had designed it that these straps went all the way around, and made them just a little longer too, then they could have marketed it that you can also also securely attach another bag like you did or perhaps a tripod for example, on the outside of the bag. Only having the little webbing snap-lock at the top only leads to an unstable way to haul a second bag. I would challenge you to see that it does not fall to the left or the right - my bet is that it will!! 🤣🤣 I would recommend purchasing a couple of straps to achieve all of this none the less. All the best and trust your get-away goes well.
