April 2022: Last Chance To See The Planetary Alignment 

The Pre-Dawn Sky is where I saw a conjunction of Venus, the Moon and Jupiter as we began a 4 day hike in the Grand Canyon, June of 1977, it was a big smiling face with the moon in a very thin crescent and the planets just off each point end. Spectacular as was the hike. Astronomy is where the Wonders Truly Live.

No matter what day s this happens, it will be cloudy wherever I am.

We are blessed that we live far enough from any cities or towns that we can see all this very clearly.

All five naked-eye planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn) were visible from Australia in the early morning sky for several mornings last week.

If you are just becoming interested in astronomy, Stellarium is a must.

I just saw the most romantic and touching messages. I have to tell you that I was overwhelmed when I saw them. It was all very surprising. Totally unexpected! I found these messages both in the intimacy of a beautiful, sunny room, and I also saw them, when the sun set, writ large across the stars. From the tiniest details to the largest, the messages were exquisitely, sensitively contrived and beautifully, expertly delivered. The whole day seemed to be a Love Letter -- a day full of optimism and promise, bursting with affection and hope and dreams of epic proportions and layered with sweet, compelling thoughts that whispered volumes to me. How could I fail to respond? I was magnetized! I was galvanized! Mesmerized! But I have struggled since last week to know how to reply. Finally, a quote came to mind and it just felt SO RIGHT: "And so, together, they built a life they loved." The feelings have stuck with me and it's how I feel even now. Loved. Warm. Inspired! Venus' magnitude changes according to its phases. Venus during these conjunctions in April is 1/3 crescent, but still the brightest thing in the sky except the Moon. At its full phase it would be so bright you'd need a decent sized telescope to see any planet that gets too near it, which as I write this already occurred. My first telescope was a 3" reflector scope I got for my birthday in 1962 and came with two lens eyepieces a high 60x and medium 20x magnification and I later bought an 80x for it, really good for planets. One of the worst hobby killers is over-powering your telescope. If you see a telescope that says it has 200x to 400x forget it as it's junk. An 80mm or 3"+ like mine was shouldn't really go over 120x even though you'll hear double the aperture, 80mmx2=160x is your maximum magnification, but I haven't found that to be true even with bigger scopes unless you're happy with fuzzy views that shimmer badly. Seeing conditions would have to be perfect to crank my 152mm scope up to 300x. Believe me, even at 200x the field of view is small, eye relief is short and the picture moves fast from the Earth's rotation. I will use 160x for viewing the surface of the Moon and it's like being there, but it moves so much I'm always adjusting with my hand controls. I use the same power for planets unless viewing is exceptional then I'll go to 180x. I live near very dark skies so viewing is pretty nice except that night we set up near a bunch of irritable rattlesnakes. We thought it was best to call it a night and leave. Sadly most cheap, less than $100 telescopes aren't very good. If you buy a refractor telescope make sure you can see from the side (has a 90 degree diagonal) or you won't be able to see very high in the sky without crouching down or putting the scope on top of your car. Good binoculars start around $100 and you want 42mm to 50mm objective lens with no more than 10x and even then you'll need to rest the binos on something. In Western Australia, we had the planets line up in the last months of 2021, looked fantastic.

This morning, before dawn in northern Australia, i managed to photograph the Planetary Parade, plus the moon aligned. So lucky.

I believe it was late 2006 or early 2007 that all 8 planets were lined up in a row. Saturn was showing great color bands in her atmosphere in my xt8 Orion dobsonian.

I remember this happened in the late 1970’s. They were warning this would cause the Earth to rip apart. I don’t think it happened. 😂

Some of my coworkers,and friends say that we don't realize it yet, but we're actually near the end of the world/time;and that who knows? what's going to happen next with all of this war and all etc going on and that the almighty can't take it anymore.

What you see and when you will see it varies with the place of observation and the time of viewing. Tonight, at 9:30 Pm on April 4th I see the line of Jupiter, Venus, Mars and Saturn extending from 15 degrees off the horizon to over the top of Orion in the southwest sky with the naked eye. I live in Delmar Maryland. Thanks for posting.

I was an amateur astronomer for years but have drifted away from the hobby. A couple of months ago I noticed this quite by accident. I need to reengage with the hobby.

When a “ONCE IN A LIFETIME” event happens, GEAR UP, because what comes after may be life changing. I just saw the conjunction of Mars and Saturn this morning. I couldn't see it on the 5th or 6th because it was too cloudy. It was so cool! Fun Fact: There won't be another conjunction of Mars and Saturn until April of 2024.

Sad I have to miss this in the Netherlands. The planets are just under the horizon at 6 am. After 6 am, it's getting daylight. So it's hard to see the planets in my asi294mc camera. This moment it good for the countries in the Southern hemisphere or at the equator

Does being in the N hemisphere or S hemisphere have an effect on when you will see the stars and planets and if so when will you see them in particular places

The conjunction seems to be the precise cycle of the celestial bodies moving in a spirograph formation, which is NOT part of the heliocentric mechanics...

That's kind of bad news if the sun decides to throw a coronal mess ejection in this direction, the magnetic field from the planets will pull it all in.
