This just goes to show how finance is more emotional rather than just numbers. You were so close to paying off ALL of your debt but you made a decision based off of your family’s safety and well being which to me is priceless and important. Give yourself some grace. Everything happened for a reason but also, those were your choices. The best thing to do is to move forward and not lose focus! You’re so close!

I wish more people realized how not great Dave Ramsey’s advice is. It’s SO OUTDATED. I’m sorry you had to learn the hard way. You and your family have come a long way and it seems like you’re right at the beginning of a new chapter in your finances with the new house and those costs remaining relatively stable for the foreseeable future. Hopefully things go y’all’s way for increasing income and it can make you able to start hitting the investment metrics you want!

@@MsCardio1 umm where did I “bitch and moan about how rough is”?? His advice is outdated; he says all you need is $1,000 EF and every last penny should go towards debt, that number has never changed for him to account for inflation or anything. The two examples given in the video. The absolute abhorrence he has towards credit scores and encourages people to not care about them when unfortunately with the housing market more people have to rent and often times you need a good credit score. And what do I recommend to replace it?? Countless finance creators… Tiffany Aliche (The Budgetnista), Ramit Sethi (I Will Teach You to Be Rich), Erin Lowry (Broke Millennial), Tori Dunlap (Her First 100k), Chloe Elise (Deeper Than Money), and many more.

That was not Dave's fault. As another commenter said, no financial guru would ever recommend refinancing any loan from federal to private. That was a terrible decision she made based on fear. Dave Ramsay's content tends to be fear mongering with overstated statistics and straw-man arguments to prove their own points. I'm not surprised she got scared by what he was saying.

Congrats on your dedication and progress! I must point out though that the "windfall" made a huge difference and is not something that most people will ever receive in their lifetime. As stated in the video, when the windfall is subtracted out, the debt pay down was from $214K to $67K in about 4 years. That's $147K total or an average of about $36,750 per year. Very nice, but without that windfall you would still be around $242K in debt, give or take. If your debt were still at that level, would you consider your debt payoff project a success?

Girl the biggest thing I don't understand is having these monster numbers of debt that were growing with interest and you were saying you couldn't sleep or eat and it was affecting your mental health, but you refused point blank to work? I understand not liking being an attorney and wanting to spend time with the kids, but to work temporarily to be able to pay off this debt seems like what 99% of us would do in your situation. But I understand we're not privy to all the machinations behind the scenes, but that's just an outsider view.

I'm assuming you're not a lawyer even if you are, you're not her so you have absolutely no clue everything was involved in her decision. I say this a lot but it bears repeating! Give Yourself Grace! You would extend it to someone else so please extend it to yourself. The things about mistakes is that they are meant to teach you something and what you guys learned was that you are capable and just because the anger people are loud it doesn't mean they are right. Now that you have learned this you can guide your girls, friends and many others to do better. Your blessings are coming and many have arrived you just have to allow yourself to enjoy them. But I know it's hard because I have been where you are. Just keep walking the light will shine and joy is to be had! Good luck

I am sure you also celebrate these but you paid all that debt down to where you are now while also having other wins like supporting two children, budgeting for healthy food and buying a bigger home where you wanted it to be. I would not get too hard on yourself for refinancing that one loan because I was in that desperate mode in the same timeframe of you and also refinanced at the same time and those interest rates were so enticing and the chance for debt relief really seemed like a pipe dream

I was pleasantly surprised that it was better for us in the long run to get 20 year forgiveness on his loans. We both graduated law school in 2021 and feel like we missed out on the prepandemic house prices. We’re in escrow on our first home and the mortgage is going to be 3,200, which feels like huge yikes since our area was a low to MCOL area. I'm new to your channel, so my first impression is that you keep sliding back into debt, and you are overly complicating it by going back and forth sliding back into debt, resigning from working as a lawyer, instead of trying to increase your income by finding a higher paying jobs as a lawyer. in 2021 I started taking my family out of debt, but once we started, however I never ever borrowed money again, and slide back into debt, and we would only increase our household income, and never decrease until you are 100% out of debt. this is obviously easier said than done but as long as you are holding on to your decisions (already made, no way to return and change it) that feeling will persist, unfortunately. The best solution I see is focus what progress you can do moving forward. See things ahead of you and "stop" looking at the decisions you made (unless if they are to inspire you to do even better) because they will not be changed. You are doing fine. You have accomplished much more than you probably could ever thought (even during those times when you made those decisions). You can do better? Then lets focused on that, Laureen. You can do it!

Hey you might have seen my earlier emails, and I am a fellow Mass person. As someone else in the comments, give yourself some grace. Yes, it would have been great if you didnt borrow for the law degree. But hey you are not the first person I know that studied law, and doesn't like the job. (I know many) I do wonder if there are aspects of working in law that you might enjoy that could help you in a side hussle type of way. Yes, if you are in your30s I do think you need to apply resources towards building a portfolio. Oh, (and I am skipping around in your video), in my life I participated in some way in 2 IPO's and 2 company sales. Here is the key if that happens for you two. DO NOT SPEND those proceeds, invest them, or pay off some of that debt. These events do NOT happen all the time. And there is no guarantee they will happen., I could go on, but I guess my key messages are. 1. Give your self some slack. 2. See if you can make that asset you paid for, (your degree), help you in some way, like perhaps combining with personal finance. And three, life is not a race. Keep your priority right and you will be fine.

I am sorry you felt pressured to finance your loans. I understand how daunting that kind of balance can feel like. I feel a lot of these wealth advisors try to push those who would get the forgiveness to be scared it’s not going to happen. I think they do this to try and benefit themselves and not the person struggling. Many have the mindset that why should they be on the hook to carry the forgiveness burden when they don’t have the debt so if more people are not going to benefit from the forgiveness the less the burden will be from them. I have a huge balance as well and I also had private loans so I had the benefit of seeing both systems the whole time and truly seeing the benefits to keeping my debt in the federal system. I also used to work for MOHELA one of the main servicing companies. I applaud your mindset of realize them mistake but not being sucked in to the what if you didn’t thoughts.

Relate to the school loan thing ..except the windfall of money situation. Most people dont have that just happen for them

The messy middle is fricking messy 🤣. It's extremely hard to plan and budget for every contingency. As for paying off debt, my husband and I created a paper chain out of craft paper and wrote payment goals on them. We hung it on the side of the fridge and cut off a link every time we reached a payment goal. We do not have kids, but we found it fun to make and even better to cut the links off as we went. Your girls would probably love being involved making it, and it was a great visual to see the progress. It was really exciting to cut up that last link!

Know that u are and your kids are okay. My husband got very ill and it put things in perspective. Give yourself some 'grace'. We all learn from our past choices. Don't beat yourself up. You only do what u know at the time. Move forward enjoying life with your beautiful children and husband. That's what's most important in life. Take care!💜

Have been with you since the beginning. We are on a similar journey and stage. Keep up the great work! Agree with you 100 percent that Dave Ramsey has very questionable advice! Some aspects are great, but be very wary about is ideas on his student loan, tax and inheritance advice. Almost cost us several hundred thousand dollars.

Hi, new sub here. Thank you for including a recap of your journey in this video. Congratulations on coming so far and I look forward to following your progress. I too have LOTS of financial regrets I am trying to forgive myself and husband for. I hope to be debt free in 4 years. The amount of money we’ve wasted on finance charges keeps me up at night.

I’m almost positive that the money guys say 50 in their podcast because Brian turned 50 this year and he’s deciding whether to pay off his mortgage. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Your videos have been very informative when it comes to how to build budgets off of a one income household! My husband & I have gone back and forth about me staying home once we have children, and I've used your videos to give myself an idea of what it is like to live off of one income. Thank you for these videos! No need to beat yourself up about past financial decisions. What's done is done, just keep moving forward 😊

I think refinancing those debts was a good decision. Your interest went down 5%. That is awesome.

You’re doing awesome, Lauren. We are in same stage you are. Live on LI, bought high priced home, with high interest. Got one kid, one on the way. I’m incredibly financially driven like you. Hard to pull it all off in the “messy middle.” But you’re focused and driven. It’ll work out, just stick with the program. You guys got this, as do we. It’s just gonna take a bit to really see the fruits of our dedication.
