Welcome guys,
I have my Aprilia Shiver 750 which was over due a service. This was a major service with valve clearance check, a broken exhaust and some other bits. I had to adjust most of the valve clearances and I show you how I do it. On a previous video I showed you how I repaired the exhaust - this is the link for that video if you missed it - • Aprilia Shiver blowing...
I hope you enjoy the video, please like and subscribe 👍

I prefer the non abs version aesthetically. And mechanically too, actually. It’s the superior bike

Very good video. I have an Aprilia Shiver and find it is very sensitive with the starting and idling. If it starts bad it seems to stay bad, if it starts and idles well, then it runs perfectly. No errors on the dash, Have you got any ideas, and also recommend any particular battery. Cheers

Brilliant video on the valve clearance adjustment, but just to let you know youre not supposed to blow out a cotton air filter (big risk damaging it). You need a specific detergert to clean them, then let it dry, then spray a dedicated filter oil on them to trap the dirt particles. If not, just put a std. paper filter back in like it came with from the factory.

Hi I'm sorry my English is not good. I have a shiver 2015, millage 27k . my engine is noise, sounds like 'kluk kluk kluk' in the area camshaft..the sound is clear once the temperature meter shows 3 bar. Is it normal for v twin engine or not a normal bike?

Lools a really good system on the Aprillia. Cam chain runs to an idler gear so you can lift cams out easy. I like that. Also no rear suspension linkage to service. Certainly easier than my Firestorm for access

Great informative video! What are you opinions on the Aprilia Shiver 750? Looking at possibly purchasing one. 2014, 22kms and may need to do a valve check myself if purchase. Thanks in advance!

I've had mine since new, it's a 2014 model with over 30k miles on it. I've had no major issues other than head stock bearings and the exhaust repairs, but this has been an all year round bike. I used this bike for track training and did several thousand miles at high revs, high speed (high speed for this bike) and hard braking with no issues. If the battery gets a little weak it can struggle to start! I use it more as a courtesy bike now and everyone who borrowed it loves it! 👍🙂

Mel. Hi I wonder if you could help. My waterpump froze and the drive gear snapped off (shiver 750 2014). I went replace the pump today and noticed the cam timing chain is also snapped. The bike was still running. I could hear a grating noise. I got a tow. Question is your video takes me right down to taking the cams out. I need to go to the next step and take the drive gear out and then try to replace the chain. If I mark the position of the drive gear do I have to do the timing when I replace the chain or because I did'nt rotate the engine or touch the position of the cams it won't have changed. Also do you know if I have to remove the clutch to get the new chain on the crank end? My plan is to loop it over the bottom gear then thread it up the channnel and somehow loop it over the drive sproket and replace that. I'm not a mechanic. Any advice from anyone with any idea would be welcome. Thanks. Love the video. Very helpful to me. Thanks PS just wondering why engine didnt blow when timing chain broke? Thanks.

Thank you for this informative video. When you first checked the vert cyl clearances, you eyeballed each cam to place the lobes away from the valve buckets. I would have used a factory tdc mark or the dial indicator to find tdc. Is there a reason that you have confidence that you will get an accurate clearance measurement without checking that you are at tdc first? Thanks again - Mike in Connecticut USA
@melsmotors
@melsmotors Год назад
Hi Mike, You can't use TDC to measure valve clearances! you have to turn the engine until each cam lobe faces up. Once you turn the engine into the check position, the engine will never be at TDC. This is the same with all 4 stroke engines. You are checking the underside of the camshaft, 180 degrees away from the lobe. Think of the cam as a tear drop, peak of the cam lobe at the top and the round bottom on the bucket (or rocker) what ever system you have. I have 2 other videos showing valve clearances, one was on my GSXR600, I think this was under 'Track Prep' and a Honda Fireblade, there was a part 1&2 with that one. Hope this helps.
@mikestone5595
@mikestone5595 Год назад
Reading from section N4.1 "Checking and adjusting valve clearances" from the Ducati workshop manual for my Multistrada 620, it describes the process for aligning the marks for tdc, and then setting the degree wheel "to zero the horizontal cylinder is at top dead center of the expansion stroke, and therefore we can proceed to check the valve clearances on this cylinder. To measure the clearances in the vertical cylinder, rotate the crankshaft...270 deg from this position. This will bring the vertical cylinder to tdc of the expansion stroke, and therefore we can proceed to check the valve clearances on this cylinder." Since the low side of the cam probably yields the same clearance for some duration, both our methods may be valid. But I am wondering if the factory clearance spec is designed to be checked at tdc, your method may yield a slightly tighter final clearance? - Mike

@melsmotors Год назад
@@mikestone5595 hi Mike the Ducati is very different to everything else, as it uses to the desmodromic valve train, you can't confuse the 2 system as the same setup. On a conventional 4 cylinder engine, you have to have the opposite cylinder that you're checking to be either rocking or use the rule of '9' To use the rule of '9' the engines firing order must be 1342, otherwise this won't work! This video only applies to this engine, it's not a true basis for a 'fits for all' procedure.

Hi Simon, to turn off the 'spanner' light, go into the menu, then into diagnostic, enter the service code 12398, this will take you into a separate menu, scroll down to 'coupon reset' and select 'yes'. All done.

Top video! I’ve been weighing the valve service up and it looks more complicated on pics than it actually is. My dorsoduro has been a bit of a pain to start from cold recently so it looks like I’ve a job on over winter 👍🏼

@@rhumorsky4055 yes mate exactly that, once she’s going and warmed up she restarts absolutely fine. Mine is in bits in my garage at the minute and 5 of the valves where out of spec and all on the tight side. I’ve ordered new valve cover gaskets as mine were absolutely covered in sealant. They’ve cleaned up to 95% but I’m not happy to reuse them. Also the 4 Alan key cover bolts on the front cylinder were badly corroded so I’ve ordered 8 of them and 8 new seals to go underneath them.
