Great video Steve! We had to make a few tweaks to the post. Today we've posted the images of the rear hatch lamination tray along with the others.

@ApteraMotors What you should be doing is addressing everyone’s concerns about the hub motors. Also, if you’re serious about this thing, put up a dated milestone chart with the content and purpose of each of the PI’s. Walk the walk.

@bobhellman8676
@bobhellman8676 16 дней назад
@adimchionyenadum2962 I didn’t particularly approve of my own wording. “everyone’s” could have been “significant”. As regards the dated milestone request, I could have said “I believe the fans would benefit from” etc.. My comment was less than cordial. Here’s the deal… When Aptera said in Nov./Dec. that they were going to complete PI’s “in the first few months of next year”, if that were remotely true, a January walkthrough should have taken place and you would have seen the majority of all parts for those PI’s on benches or shelves. That’s the absolute reality. Again, virtually every significant part would have had to have been in that factory or in transit in order to make good on that promise. And that includes enough hub motors to support the build. January… You also heard “crash data by mid-year.” Mid-year is 4th of July. Short version: I am suggesting that people stop letting Aptera tell them what to think, open their eyes, and look at what Aptera should be doing, based on their claims. They should have been driving PI’s since 1st qtr.. If not then, 2nd qtr. or at least you would have seen them finishing up. You’re basically in 3rd qtr. and the January parts are where exactly? Let me put it this way: It’s 6 months later and you actually “know” less now than you thought you did last year. I think fans deserve to see definitive plans and Aptera executing them reliably if they’re being asked for trust and money. Again, thanks for your feedback.

Sort of... this is more about pushing the metal into place. A cool process! I have seen die forming using an air chisel with a hammer head on it to gradually form the metal to a surface, but this is obviously better for large parts. The English Wheel generally stretches metal between the upper wheel and the lower anvil with different sized contact areas supplied by different lower anvils. I have used a small palm nailer with a carriage bolt in it to stretch sheet metal into a bag filled with sand... I show some of this on my channel under the titles CMB (Custom Metal Bodywork) 1-12, I believe it is.

Free Power covered this Twitter post in their air handler video two days ago. Twitter had the post up when I first saw it, but they took it down right after. Hopefully since you are posting this, that means Aptera just made a mistake and aren't doing anything beyond just taking the original post down. I suspect your guess that their partnership with Amino hasn't been announced yet is the issue. They probably just want to do things the "right way". I am looking forward to the official announcement. Maybe they will even show the completed hatch panels. As for why there are only eight dash panels, I don't think they can't make more. But they may not need more. It seems to me the solar cells are not needed for crash testing. They may want to test the structure of the glass lamination in a crash, but destroying a solar panel in a test seems expensive. Maybe they will craft some panels with no cells in them. Surely PI1 will be getting cells though.

A few years ago I built an English Wheel to fabricate wing tips for a Lockheed Electra aircraft for the movie Amelia. Steve you should check out the smarter every day video on pinch forming to learn more about this process, its essentially two carbide fingers on opposite sides of the sheet metal that pinch the sheet at calculated precision angles that creat shapes which would alternatively need to be created through a forming die, which would be way more expensive. I believe his video is called "Roboforming". I spent over a decade as a machinist/tool and die maker so part of my excitement for aptera is seeing all the mold/die work.
@pstrelec
@pstrelec 17 дней назад
The process used here was not exactly that the one described in the smarter every day video as this shape is not very complex. The two oposing tools forming the shape is used when the shape is very complex. I believe they used a processed where only one tool is pressing the blank against a die mace out of material such as wood. The machine for this is much simpler and less costly.
@jhallpk
@jhallpk 17 дней назад
yeah I was describing the other video, the process by which the sheet for the Aptera was made is clearly on a different machine with a different layout. The overall principle of how they are deforming the sheet looks similar though, all I was saying

Anyone at Aptera that's reading the comments: you need to put the name of your company on the vehicle. People who watch this channel and follow EVs know what it is and who makes it but most of the people who see it on Facebook or (if they're lucky) in real life have never seen it before and have no idea what it is or who makes it. I spoke with someone yesterday about electric vehicles (he already knew a lot) and he had never heard of Aptera.

This process has become popular for fabricating body panels and fenders for classic and custom cars. The traditional process manually uses an English wheel to form and shape the metal sheets and it takes a long time and great expertise to do it well. Or it uses expensive custom dies and heavy duty presses. But this new process can make very complex panels, shapes and parts more quickly, consistently, and it can be used to create multiple, identical parts without the extreme cost of dies. And you can relatively quickly do variations on the panels and parts, whereas conventional methods are prohibitively expensive and time consuming to adapt or change.

While the machinery is made by Amino, there is no way to tell which company is actually making the solar panel. This could be Maxeon or any other company. Second, if it is not Maxeon, it may be that this is simply a low quantity run (e.g. PI vehicles only). It could also be a very early test run which was done months ago.
