Aputula (Finke) Trachoma Art Mural Project
Indigenous Hip Hop Projects visited Aputula (Finke) in the Northern Territory to deliver an art mural and hip-hop dance project in in partnership with Indigenous Eye Health, University of Melbourne. The dreaming for Aputula (Finke) is the Dingo which was the inspiration for the mural. Artist’s Andrew Bourke, Axle and Dion Brownfield worked with community members and local artist Justine Anderson under the guidance of Richard Doolan and other elders who led the design of the painting of the dreaming story. Surrounding the key dreaming images are local bush tucker and bush medicine including honey ants and bush tomatoes. The mural also feature Milpa near the entrance to the amenities block with the message “clean faces, strong eyes” and the local football team the Aputula Crows logo. Hip-hop dancers Tina Di Melo and Creedence Blanco ran dance workshops in the school in combination with trachoma and hygiene health promotion. Nellie Harris support the art crew and captured the week with video and photos.
