Hey Griffin, I just want to tell you the impact your work has had on me. A few months back, you posted some stills from an interview you shot which you ended up putting in this video at 1:39. You changed everything about my approach to filmmaking with THOSE STILLS. I remember being in my car waiting for my curbside order of food and being dumbstruck at how ridiculously good those shots came out. Interviews and Interview lighting in particular are my obsession and I'm improving my gear and technique thanks to those stills. You are a HIGHLY talented filmmaker and I'm learning so much from you. love the perspective on this one. For me, not having the higher demand for work, but still needing some tools in my arsenal, i opted for a 300d mark i and a 120d mark i to keep in my kit, and try to rent for bigger stuff as needed, and forward that cost to the client.

Thanks for another great video Griffin! I used one of these on my last shoot before lockdown (alongside 2x 120D IIs) and think I'll definitely be picking one up when jobs ramp back up again, especially for overpowering the sun like you mention. BTW - really enjoying all your no-nonsense videos. No clickbait, straight to the key content, and no filler content of you on electric skateboards or making coffee! :D It's great having a real filmmaker discussing filmmaking, showing high quality real-world video content that you've been hired to film. The value from that compared to a "RU-vidr", so to speak, adds so much credibility to the content you're discussing. Keep it up!

Again very informative video, Griffin, congrats! There's a situation I'm trying to figure out. Buying a single 300D Mk II (+ dome) or 100D+200D (+ domes)? The price of this 100+200 combo is more or less the same and somehow I feel multiple lights are always better than a single one, give more flexibility, more lighting options... They do not probably have so robust build quality, but still even simple 100D is powerful enough... so - which option would you choose? Thanks for helping me with this one, I appreciate your opinion!

Thanks Michael! I haven't used them, but I can say I don't have much interest in trying them. Nothing can beat the super high quality after sales support from Aputure, so I will be a Aputure fan no matter what haha

Great video, really struggling to decide between this and the 300x. Love the idea of bi-colour, but not sure if the 300x has enough punch to key when modified for daylight interiors.

I would personally go for the 300Dii Mark ii. I gel mine to tungsten when needed which kills some output, but if I need tungsten usually it’s because it’s indoors at night and I won’t need full output then

Thank you! I have two of the 120d mark 1's and one of the 300d mark 2's...they are all good, but if you are looking for raw output then the 300d mark ii is the way to go!

my biggest question is, is the return for the price point worth it from the 120d mk ii? or there isn't really a difference besides in output? I'm having trouble deciding between the 300d mk ii and the 120d mk ii ... hope you can help! thank you

I think both are great lights and it really comes down to use case of how you usually use them, and how much you are working with the lights. I can tell you my 300D Mark ii has paid for itself multiple times over because of how many jobs I have used it on, so the extra $350 over the 120d ii was absolutely worth it. I am looking at adding another to my kit and it will definitely be another 300Dii over the 120d ii

I have a few lights but its been several years and want to get a new light. Kind of my new everything light. Will probably be my new key light. I was looking at the 120d ii but do you think its just worth getting the 300 Mark ii right away instead of getting a 120d ii first?

Did LEE Filters Master Location Filter Pack ever melt? I used cheap gels and they melted against Aputure 300d mkii with 2x fresnel so I'd like to hear your opinion on this..!

This video was a while ago but I'm pretty sure it was a aputure 300d mark ii with a 36" light dome with a grid on it, and for a hair light i used a aputure mini light dome with an aputure 120d mark i.

Hey, great video. Quick question - does the V-mount batteries mounts securely on control panel? I mean, do batteries fix with some kind release button or they just hang there on the panel mount?

Hi Pijus, they hold on via “v lock” solution which is an industry standard way of securing batteries. It will go on and not come off until you press the release button.

For me, my main light kit is a 300Dii and two 120d’s. Probably gonna grab one of the 600d’s when those come out as well

@@GriffinConway Nice kit. I have three 120ds but after a shoot I did yesterday I'm thinking of selling them to buy two 300x for the versatility. For bigger shoots I also have a Mole-Richardson 900w senior led. It's a great light but cumbersome. I'm really hoping the 600d really is a 1200hmi equivalent. Would love to get a few of those.

Definitely with you there. The 120’s are great but the extra punch of the bigger lights is necessary for certain situations

@@GriffinConway Especially if you're doing heavy diffusion. The 300Dii really works well with the lightdome when you toplight products.

What is the filter holder that you mentioned you use with this light? Is this an Aputure accessory or is it built-in to the light? Thanks

The filter holder I am referring to comes with the light dome ii and light dome ii mini from Aputure. Another option that is less elegant is you can just gaff tape a filter about 12” away from the light on the inside of the soft box

Personally I prefer the higher output of the 300d ii over the bi color of the 300x, but both are great lights and it really comes down to preference.

I don’t believe so, but you can use it to light a subject in a similar way as a flash. The only difference would be it would be continuous light instead of a burst of light

Hey@@GriffinConway , This C-stand has 22 lb load Capacity. The 300D MK II weight 25lb without the Light Dome II . I see that you mount it in the Arm of the C-stand too Any issue with that ? Do you use Sand bags ? (Sorry if my english is bad)

Do you actually use 70% brightness and brighter for some of your shoots? I'm thinking about purchasing 300d II or 300X and I'm torn between these two...

For me I use 80-100% brightness for about half of my shoots. I prefer the extra power from the 300Dii and just use gels when I need to go to tungsten over the ease of color switching in the 300x. That said, everyone’s work is different and your experience may be different than mine.

Griffin Conway oh, one more question. How do you use 120d for when you have 2 300d II these days? Maybe not for the key light but for the edge or hair light?

X 8 thanks so much! I really appreciate the support and the kind words. I use the 300Dii usually as the key light for the main subject, and then I have two more 120d’s. Most of the time I will use one of the 120’s as a hair light through either the mini light dome ii or the Aputure fresnel, and then I sometimes use the third 120d for a background light or shoot it in to the ceiling to bring up ambient exposure.
