Since I already own an Aqara hub that’s gonna be a NO from me. There doesn’t seem to be an advantage to the new sensor other than connectivity and the new one is too big. Hopefully the new hub will bring Matter connectivity to all the old Aqara devices as well.

I'm really excited to be learning all these new things about my smart home. It's coming along nicely, but I do wish Apple would devote more time to improving the Home App/HomeKit with more options. Thanks for the great video as always, Shane. Unifi is the brains of my house and I find that pretty funny!

Yep. Several years back I went full in to the Apple ecosystem just to use the Home app. At first, it seemed great. But now, it isn't working supper reliably and, Apple doesn't seem particularly interested in. That on top of the comparative minor number of HA devices that work with HK. One of the more important deficiencies of HK is the lack of logging. By comparison, the Aqara app - which I have to use anyway for alarm system purposes - has that important function. It makes it easy for me to see how my automations and system are working or not working and what's going on. With HK, all I know is when they don't work. And I have to troubleshoot blindly.

Cuatro Preguntas IMPORTANTES: 1.

Since Aqara already makes a contact sensor that is compatible with Apple Home, Matter support doesn't matter to me (pun un-intended). i'll be sticking to the original. I like the small design and like that I can see it in the Aqara app. I will be curious to see how the new P2 integrates with the new Aqara hub down the road. Maybe then it will be worth the switch. Speaking of Aqara, have you heard any news on their new light strip? I'm really excited for that product!

I always enjoy your videos and your insights. Until now, I have avoided any devices that required manufacturer hubs. However, I did just buy a set of Meross leak sensors, which come with a Meross hub. We'll see how that works out. But in general, I will continue buying devices that are either natively compatible with Homekit, or natively compatible with Matter (with or without Thread, although Thread would be my preference). Having said that, I'd be interested in a video that attempts to change my mind about that :-) For example, if installing a special hub that acted as a (somewhat) universal bridge connecting all sorts of non-Homekit / non-Matter devices to Matter (I have Homepod Minis to act as Border routers) I would be interested to see how complex that would be and how functional it would be.

Yes Shane. It might be helpful. Based on much of what you, and others have presented, I expected Matter to be the ultimate integrator of all things home automation. But, when I set up my new, M2 hub using matter, I was disappointed in how many functions/devices connected to that hub were NOT available in Homekit. It got worse when I reconnected my existing M1 hub, which is central to my alarm system, using Matter, only to find that the hub doesn't even show up in Homekit then, other than as a Matter bridge! I not longer had alarm capability. Needless to say, after searching far and wide for answers, I reset my M1 to it's pre-Matter connections and have an alarm back in HomeKit. WTF?

I have a Alexa system and Several Wyze cameras throughout my home and currently have about 6 V1 Wyze door sensors, all of which have died. I don't want to go with the new Wyze system, and I am looking for a simple brand for door sensors (2 are outdoors). I have a few devices installed that use the "Smart Things" and "Google Home" apps. From a home automation standpoint how would I use this to turn off the AC when a door is opened? For instance, I own a beach condo and it destroys the AC when someone just leaves the door open in the heat. So my goal is to turn that off while the door is open and start it back when its closed. I haven't found a great guide on how to do this yet. I have the new M3 hub, the Aqara sensors, a Google Nest, and even an Apple Homepod to begin testing with. But if there are any deeper instructions or methods, I'd love to see what everyone else is doing.

Great video, Shane. Whereas I love that Aqara released a thread-based device that doesn’t even need their hub, as a dedicated Apple Home user I would stick with their old sensors. To keep things wife approved, I don’t see being able to install a sensor that big! For anyone that is wary of adding a/another hub, I used to be the same way. I only had the Lutron hub for several months. When I finally checked out the Aqara hubs, I was blown away. Most of these are great indoor cameras with a ton of features, use Apple Secure Video, and just happen to also be hubs. The prices for the hubs and all of their products are fantastic. I have about 15 Aqara products and none of them have given me any problems for the up to 15 months of ownership.

So you can add the sensor to google home or apple. But you cant set an alarm that you left a freezer open, or set any routine that starts when a door opens or closes? Is this a limitation bu the hub? Or a limitation by aqara? This thread journey looks like zigbee v1.01.

I just installed a bunch of Aqara contact sensors on every window and exterior door. What I’ve found is that if a door or window is open when arming Home Away the security system still arms with no notification of fault so I could leave home with the back door wide open. If I close the door or window while armed the alarm will go off if it is subsequently opened. I’ve searched and have been unable to find a means of a workaround meaning I have to walk around and check every door or window or remember to check status of each on app. Seems a pretty fundamental shortcoming.

Too big! I really like my original Aqara devices, but they just keep making everything bigger. I’m not sure why they are worried about 5 years’ worth of battery life. The size makes this a poor trade off. Besides, I’m guessing I’ll replace most devices before 5 years anyway, just because of technology improvements - but it better offer a very significant benefit if the size is going to jump like that.

It looks like this new hub will be needed to use Thread within Aqara's ecosytem. So, those of us who already have Aqara hubs and would want to use Aqara Thread devices within Aqara's app, have a new thing we'd need to buy. Pretty weak incentive when we could have near full functionality with the other ecosystems pretty much everyone who has Aqara stuff probably already has. I'm just over here waiting not so patiently for the M1S to get matter support. Maybe they'll drag their feet putting out stuff like this instead of doing that at all.

I wouldn't mind that design if it was smaller overall. As much as I want to start buying into thread, I think I might just go with the zigbee variant instead. Wishful thinking, but any idea if you would be able to pair another manufacturer’s Thread sensor to the Aqara alarm once the thread hub is released?
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates Год назад
I'm not sure. It seems like that might be a possibility when automating through the Aqara app once you are able to pair 3rd party accessories in the Aqara app. It will be interesting to see.

Love the videos! I would like to hear more of your opinions on what you would use though. For instance when you said you would stay with zigbee if we already have it. That’s super helpful to hear.

I love buttons as they are very versatile, but I wish that Matter or Apple home supported toggle on/off with each press option for these kind of buttons without doing a work around.

Great video like always. Seen videos around in RU-vid, looks like adding Matter can create issues, some people even have had to reset all their smart home system. I saw on another video that in order to switch to matter you need to activate IPV6. Can you talk or even create a video that will deep more into the topic?
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates Год назад
Yes Matter over thread does use IPV6. Thank you for the feedback.

Would love a video deeper on Matter, what systems are supported, the timeline for future systems, and maybe a few sites to look at all Matter products available. Searching myself I get a lot of mixed info and outdated stuff. And if Nanoleaf wants to send you some Sense+ Light switches early to review that would be awesome. First switch with almost everything I want and I’ll probably buy 5-10 if they’re good. Been holding out for a while, and I’m ready to pull the trigger and do most of my switches.

Is there a door sensor that is natively weather proof for outdoor use?
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates Год назад
Not one that natively supports Apple Home. But I did weatherproof the Aqara zigbee contact sensors and have been using outside for about a year. Still going strong. Here’s what I did: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4WY4aNWQcrc.html

Hi Shane. I'm in Europe (Netherlands) and just got 2 P2 Door sensor. And none of them connects (fails during MATTER code scanning) after 2 minutes. I have the latest Apple TV + HomePod and already have existing Thread and Matter products, and also have the Aqara M2 hub. I have tried many times, but these just does not pair. I've also done a reset, but still no luck. What am I missing?

Yes. Matter gets talked up all over the place. As the ultimate integrator so that home automation devices can work with any home automation application. But my limited experience so far, say otherwise. Using it with Aqara and SwitchBot hubs has been humbling. It lacks many capabilities when using it to connect to HK that these products have within their native apps. That's a deal breaker for me. Or maybe, I'm just an idiot who doesn't understand it.

I’m open to replacing my M2 hub with the new one, but I hope Aqara has a migration plan. I don’t want to have to re-pair 100+ devices! I’m a huge fan of Zigbee, and I’m gonna continue to use it for a while. My first experience with Thread was not good. Going to give Thread some time.

@@robertmathers7852 I'm referring to the release of the M3 hub and a migration plan that moves devices from one hub to another. In the past, there hasn't been any hubs really able to do that. You had to re-pair all your devices with the new hub.

I’m sure this is something they can do it in a software update, similar to what wemo has with the scene controller. I may use this for my church, it’s a commercial style building, I wired Leviton 2gen smart switches and dimmers throughout the facility, so I may use these door sensors.

Thank you for covering the pertinent details so diplomatically, and please pardon my cynicism. I’m so underwhelmed with matter/thread, Apple in general, and Aqara specifically. Years of Thread hype, launched with a sputtering fizzle. Apple’s impressively deplorable abandonment of Siri; and now Aqara’s “Incentive” to re-buying more e-waste, all the while looking like a gameboy-sized Kirby/Stay-Puft-Marshmallow Man love child masquerading as a half-baked door sensor because it’s own (current) hubs won’t facilitate actual, effective utility. Yawn.
