G'Day folks. I noticed a steady rise in the nitrite in the aquaponics system over the past week. I've included an explanation on what caused it & how to rectify it so you folks don't have the same issue with your own build. Am sure it will help those out that encounter the same issue with their system. 👍
Hope you enjoy this clip helps you with your own design.
Cheers all. 🐟 🌱🍅

Pillow stuffing, dish scrubbies, lava rock, large size washed perlite, or even pool filter sand if used right are good cheap alternatives for high surface area biofilter media. If you can spread the outflow from the radial filter into a sort of "rain shower head" so that it wets all the media, you'll get more bioactivity from the media since it will all be continuously wet. That way you could stuff that bucket in the sump practically to the rim with media. Just coming at this from the aquarist side of things.

At the moment there's shade cloth in there & that was doing fine until I started adding 80g/2.8oz of 40% protein feed in a day. I've seen hatcheries that use a similar filter system where they use massive tanks filled with netting & shade cloth to act as both solids & bio filters. 👍 I have the PE03 so that's why I'll be running with that in my builds. 👍👍

Hi Rob, another great video. My suggestion is to go with option 2 - put in another barrel for a bio filter after the radial flow filter. I know you have to move some things around but would be best option. I did and never had another problem with the nitrates/nitrates and ammonia, best thing I ever did. Dave from Adelaide

Love the look of your system. I would suggest not disturbing the bio bed when you clean the matten prefilter to avoid getting spikes. One other point is nitrite is far more toxic at higher a pH. Marine salt will raise your pH if you add enough. Might be a good idea to keep an eye on that. Thanks for sharing your experiences

Hey Rob. Thank you for taking the time to post your videos. Last fall I decided to take the leap and create a IBC Chop and Flip, flood and drain system. I stocked it with 8 Mozambique Talipia, 2 Plecostomus and they are fertilizing a few Heirloom tomatoes, Jalapeno and Bell peppers, Green and purple Basil, and Khale. I have started experimenting with growing Moringa Oleifera, but since it runs, I will need to figure out how to keep it under control. I was wondering if you given much thought to incorporating IOT(Internet of Things) devices to alert and monitor water chemistry, levels, and flow rates through your systems? Thank you again. This is one of the best hobbies I have gotten into.

I didn't know that nitrites and ammonia could be at different levels depending on where the water sample was taken in the system. I had a set up a blue barrel CHOP2 system with a RFF, biofilter consisting of shade cloth, one media bed, one raft, 20 tilapias and flourishing produce over 2 years. The fish stopped eating and my ammonia was at 0.5ppm, Nitrite & Nitrate 0, pH fluctuating weekly between 6.0 - 7.0 with buffering. Your video showed me that I probably didn't have enough filtration for the amount of fish waste in my system. I never really fully emptied the bucket style RFF which I cleaned out once a month. Water temperature dropped to 15C and I gradually lost fish till there were none left. Seems like I've made every mistake in the book: not enough filtration, overstocking, fluctuating temperatures and pH

You could add a baffle in the sump (or 2) where the water comes from the fine filter, through bio balls (or pot scrubbies) and then to the pump. Only requires a piece of plastic big enough to span the length of the sump. Might silicone it, but you could get away just holding it in place with some rocks.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 года назад
That would work but I think a ½ filled 60L barrel will have more than enough surface area for this system. Will be able to let you know in a few weeks all going well. 😉 Cheers mate. 👍

Hey Rob, love your videos. Why not just add bags of bio media to you radial flow filter. I have had great luck doing something like this in my system. Maybe hang them from your lid on the barrel.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 года назад
I've seen folks set up mini bio bags in their settlers & contemplated doing so as well. Decided against it as the flow rate into the RFS has increased with the new pump so which shortens the retention time further. Is still something I'd like to play around with is I get a larger drum for the next build. Cheers Victor.

Rob question here: what if you proceed the solids to the grow beds and keep them there? Wouldnt the grow bed process it? Isn't that stuff even valuable for the plants?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 года назад
They will mineralise in the grow beds as well. Over time they will build up though which may cause issues. That's why many folks like myself remove the bulk of them in the settlers we build. Some will make it through to the beds & that's fine. There are also decent volumes of all nutrients suspended in the water as well so the plants will never starve in a well maintained system. Cheers.

I decided I didn’t want the sump tank water going back to the fish without first going through biofiltration so using two smaller pumps with one sourcing from inside a 6” (~15 cm) pipe inside and receiving water flow from the media & dwc beds. That water going to the fish. The pipe has drilled holes to allow some water flow in and out from the sump. Anyway, that’s the plan. Work in progress.

MrPaw hit the nail on the head. 👍 If the system was set up as a single loop, meaning pump in sump ► fish tank ► solids settler ► grow beds ► sump, then it wouldn't be an issue. As only some of the fish tank water is going to the grow beds, only some of the waste ammonia is being processed. Cheers & have a top one.

salt under 3 ppt plants are ok with, perch handle 5ppt easy , should always run at least 1ppt anyhow as a buffer to help against brownblood desease, you can add in a MBBR into the radial flow , just a 20L bucket with bottom cut out with a leaf gaurd on the bottom to contain the media , the inlet updraft moves the k1 , and lets you gain another 10L worth of filtration ~ 50 grams of feed, but to be honest I am amazed you deleted your MBBR 100L of media would be 500grams of feed capacity ...

Have seen folks set up the settler as a bio as well & considered doing so myself. 👍👍 It's a bit cramped in there for the 30 or so litres of media I want to use so that's why I'm going with the drum in the sump. Ok what's your surface area on the bio filter and feed rate per day percentage plus flow rate also how much protein percentage in the fish pellets also do you get wasted fish feed not been eaten on the bottom of the tank and if so how long before it gets sucked up to the settling tank? And do you stop feeding them for a few days to bring down the nitrites ?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 года назад
Hi James. The bio in the drum at the moment is shade cloth so I wouldn't even like to guess at the BSA. 😉👍 Will be covering the TAN break down in relation to BSA required in future clips. The fish finish all their feed or I net it out. Think I've had to do that 3 times all up so far & is normally no more than a table spoon or so. No need to stop feeding at the moment as the system is salted & the water temp/pH are fine for ammonia. Cheers mate.

It's more convenient to have all the filtration in one spot. It could also mean more infrastructure for the system depending on how tall the FT is. It would also be better placed after the solids settler for those that are growing with DWC & NFT as the ammonia needs to be converted through to nitrate for them to use. 👍

Hey Mike. I think it would be better placed after the solids settler as the larger waste will block it up too fast. I was playing with the idea of making up a filter "cup" of sorts to sit under the inlet to the bio out of some fine grade mesh like that. Would just need to pull it out & give it a hose every other day which shouldn't take too long I'd think.

Just thought I'd add in case you can't follow the water flow in the system. In this system only some of the water returning from the fish tank goes to the beds with the rest going back to the fish tank. In a single loop system to water flows like this, pump in sump ► fish tank ► solids settler ► grow beds ► sump. In a system like that it wouldn't be an issue at all. Cheers.

the stuff Rob is using is ~10:1 ratio of water volume to bio media. So a 1000L/250gal fish tank at max density would need 100L/25gal of bio media.

Hi Tracy. It all depends on the amount of feed that you will be feeding the fish. That will give us a rough idea on how much biological surface area that's required for bacteria to colonise. As an example, for my climate & the type of feed I'm using, I need roughly 1L/1quart of PE03 or K3 biomedia to process the waste from one fish once they hit 500g. So for the 30 fish in our system 30L/8gal of media to process all the waste generated by the fish. Hope that helps some. 👍

We have an Aquaponic system total of 8,000 lts. No filters no solids filter no trouble. It has been running now for 8 years. don't over feed your fish and you won't have any problems. It is as simple as that. Play with your system and YOU will have problems. If it is running and no problems why change it?

Nice one Barry. Maybe you could post some more clips to help others out. 👍👍

Barry my uncle does the same with his aquaponics system. He has a 1000liter fish tank and doesn't use large filters, he olny has one small 25mm inline filter that you buy from a plumbing store just to filter out overly large particles. Hell he doesn't even have a pH test kit 🤣... He grows all kinds of vegetables, herbs and peppers. I agree with you, if you don't over feed and stick to low stocking densities then you won't have any problems. My uncle has one goldfish and a few koi, he feeds them once a day or once every second day. I think in Mr Robs case, he has a commercial system meaning for him to harvest many fish and plants: A lot of fish have to be fed a lot in order to produce a lot of nutrients for a lot of plants. This means huge amounts of solid waste comes as a unwanted byproduct weather you like it or not🤣🤣 When I look at his system, I always get the impression he is walking a tight rope by growing as many plants and fish as possible and keeping potentially harmful nutrients under control. Trying to run the system on its absolute limit. Personally I prefer running the system similarly to yours (I am still trying to get there), by keeping stocking density low and not overfeeding. I've actually made mistake as I've used goldfish in mine, I knew goldfish are notorious for being messy, but I've just discovered exactly HOW messy they actually are. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

All this installation of big buckets and drums and fish for just two grow tables!?!?! No way...it’s definitely not worth it.

There's 3 now & could easily add another ;) No point going big out of the gate with little nutrient being created by the fish. 😉😁

BTW, fish should be the main focus with the plants being a beneficial side crop.
