After starting and nuking my set up twice, I've finally achieved stability. My tank is now 2 years old and I only need to do water change once a month without having to worry about too much algae. Here is what I've learned: * Begin with rich nutrient substrate and plant sh*t ton of root feeder. * Buy N, P and K test kit and dose each NPK separately as needed. * Add root taps once every 3 weeks to a month when plants show sign of deficiency. * you can never completely eliminate algae. * floating plants and houses plants are optional. But I keep both on my tank.

Very nice, agreed, the most important thing I learned that the most challenging thing is to get the tank running stable once, after that, it’s pretty easy!

Thank you ever so much from my fish room channel in Chicago! While in the USA we don't have much of the ferts you have I can certainly benefit from this excellent tutorial and purchase ferts accordingly.

Can you please advise on what I can do if I want to fertilise a tank with shrimp in it?

Just the same as every other tank. I have Amano Shrimp in all of my tanks and I never had problems! Most fertilizers nowadays don’t include much copper because almost all planted tanks house shrimps…

I don't understand why everyone said phosphate will be supplied by fish food. I have 50+ guppies and feed everyday, but my phosphate is always 0 and my nitrate is 40+. I have lots of vals, crypts, Limnophila sessiliflora, pearl weed and guppy grass. That's the only thing that can grow. Most other stems plants always die in my tank, even easy ones 😢

I personally don’t have tanks with a huge amount of live stock, I always provide the nutrients by fertilizing. But from my early experiences in the hobby, I also had tanks without fertilization, and almost always, a few plants took over because they adapted to the conditions… if those few plants grow well, that’s great! And if you want to try out other plants, just experiment with something like the Tropica Premium nutrition… it doesn’t have to be the lack of phosphate that is killing your plants!

@@passion4aqua I do fertilize after I discovered my phosphate and some potassium deficiency. But as you said, I may be deficient in something else as well. I've never tried Tropica. Will give it a go in the future. Right now, I'm on dry and seachem fert + a little co2, still most stem plants survive only a few months in my tank. Ive kinda given up on stem plants lol

Really difficult to find reasons for something like this, as I said, I also failed some plants multiple times without knowing why :/

@passion4aqua yeah, I've been puzzled for years. I guess the challenges to be able to keep someday plants i really wanted kept me interested. Cheers! :)

Do you have information about your water parameters? Because plants dying after months is really unusual… do they grow at first?
