So glad you made this video George. I really enjoy Md fishtanks as well. I myself have a 12 inch diameter bowl in my kitchen that was set up a year ago using this method and it's doing great. Funny enough, he recently featured a tiny desktop scape that looks alot like another i have in my kitchen. All my scapes use this method and all are different depending on lighting of course. Has been a great learning tool as i advance in my hobby. Only my oldest setup gets liquid ferts since the nutrients from the soil have been depleted. My smallest scape holds about a quart of water (if that) and i find it needs a water change every other day. I also use the same technique of just sitting it in the sink however i just fill a pitcher of declorinated water and an air line running down in. So much fun with so little and very rewarding. 👍👍👍

I’m a fan of your channel and have enjoyed your content so much. I have been inspired to aquascape my 76 gal half round aquarium but had to delay the process due to my sister being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. My beautiful sister lost her battle with cancer this month and it totally broke my heart. Watching how you created something so beautiful out of something so small was humbling. It inspired me to aquascape on a smaller scale with my 5 gal aquarium. I think I will make it a tribute aquarium to my sister. I am hoping that the process will help me heal inside while honoring my beautiful sister. Thank you, thank you so much for creating such wonderful content and inspiring so many. I will try to video my aquascape journey and will share it with you when I’m done. PS: I will also watch your friends channel to get some pointers and will make sure to put my hand on the substrate creating an upward arch before pouring the water in. Thanks again!

Now you know the genius of MD, he's truly gifted. Mixing sand, gravel, and aqua soil keeps it from being dirty. Using tiny, tiny plants keeps it to scale. Building smaller to larger towards the back gives it depth. I'm preparing to mimic his Ikea cylinder idea and if I come anywhere close to his I'll feel like I did something.

Genius move with the use of paintbrush, and colander, for slow water adding! What a great idea, including the whole process. Have a 6 gallon with some plants & two snails. Plants haven't grown much. Now I know why. I love your approach, and not being stuffy, or pretentious about all that you know. A mark of a pro, is one that makes whatever it is they do, look easy. Thanks for the easy breezy explanations, I know what I have to do now! Awesome sauce!

Nice little scape. These are called Walstad scapes after the scientist Diana Walstad. She pioneered the low-tech approach back in the '90s, and published the diffinitive guide in 1999. "Ecology of the Planted Aquarium: a Practical Manual and Scientific Treatis." You WILL have to do 3-5 water changes, initially; after that the water will stay clear. Your drain instinct was spot on but the fill is the same, air hose fast drip. Most of us Walstadt-ers cap our soil with a layer of pea gravel. Ratio is flexible but a 1:2 soil to gravel really helps anchor everything. You may want to add an apple snail or small nerite to check algae. Well done👏

I have a little larger bowl on my kitchen counter. I use a small sponge filter for water movement. Just water changes twice a week. Even shrimp in there. It is a balanced system now. Which is the important one in this style of aquarium. You have to maintain a balance between input of light and nutrients or you have an algae bowl.

Did subbed to Mark just last week, RU-vid showed his channel after watching probably one of your vids, liked this style allready but did not had the time for it. I saw a Lott of Serpadesign vids, somewhat simular to Mark s but more paludarium or terrarium style, Also great content and he uses materials from outside( so completely cost less) except for the bowl or jar. I did tried it before and let aquatic plants grow out of the bowl, did you know when some plants get above water level they will bloom, have you ever seen the Pogostemon erectus flower: unbelievably beautifull , you have to experience that one. Gravel with a roottab worked for me back then, I know of times that complete soils were not available . This makes extra new people ready for our hobby. Don't forget to change water and do some maintenance( glas leaning) Cheers George

This is a great video but the price point on the title is misleading. He brought the bowl but didn't have to buy the substrate, plants, decorations, etc. because he had them already. It would cost way more than $10 if someone had to buy everything. The plants alone would have costed at least $15 to 20 and that's if you brought it off of something on CL or FB marketplace. The price would be double at a fish shop.
