AR15 Basic Introduction & Operation - Beginner 101. Close Up in HD. Just bought your first AR-15? This video is intended for those who are interested in the AR-15 platform, but haven't had the opportunity to handle or shoot one. And those of you who may have just purchased an AR for the first time and would like to see how they're broken down. I cover the controls, some functions, disassembly, and reassembly for cleaning. This video covers the very basics only.
Overview - 0:50
Controls - 1:19
Disassembly - 7:12
Reassembly - 11:04

Note 1:
"Ride it home" - Slang for - easing the bolt forward.
People that are new to AR's / firearms, are reluctant to just let the charging handle go. So, they ease the charging handle forward "riding it home". By doing this, they are taking a certain amount of energy away from the bolt. The bolt needs that energy to strip a round of ammunition out of the magazine and chamber it. If you ease the charging handle forward, you are more likely to create misfeeds, and/or jamming. So, just pull it back, and let it go.
**Caution: It's not good practice to do it with any semi automatic firearm, that doesn't have a loaded magazine in it (to slow the action). Without a loaded magazine in the firearm, the bolt (or slide in the case of a pistol), does slam forward, possibly damaging the firearm. In that case, you do want to ease it forward ("ride it home").
Note 2:
The carry handle came with my rifle, which is a Colt. However, it does not have any Roll marks on it to indicate that it was manufactured by Colt. Do a Internet search for AR 15 Carry handle. You'll find them.

Excellent demonstration of the breakdown and reassembly of the AR-15. You are only the 2nd person I have seen breakdown the bolt carrier group and you went the extra step of removing the extractor and emphasized the need to check and clean it. The only thing, you missed and I suspect it was just a brain fart was performing a function check after reassembly. It looked like you were getting ready to perform it, but skipped ahead. Still, a very informative video with no side commentary. Oh one more thing, have people check the rings on the bolt to insure they are none missing or damaged. Thank you

I am relatively new to AR's and wanted to watch a good instructional video before disassembling my Ruger AR556 for the first time. I watched half dozen videos on RU-vid before I found your video. None of the other videos were particularly good in showing how to take the bolt carrier group apart. Your presentation is clear and concise and by far the best I found. Thank you very much for posting.

+stanfordcoffee , why sometimes the bolt is locked back (3:36) and sometimes it's not (6:40), even with empty chamber and not using the bolt catch/release in both cases? Is that because the mag wasn't inserted at the first scenario? Also, as for the selector lever: why isn't it possible to move to "safe" after discharging? Is that only for AR-15 or for M4 as well? I wonder because it's taught by many instructors to move back to "safe" after engaging and making sure the room is clear, for safety reasons. Some pretty newbie questions, but I don't have easy access to weapons in my country. Thanks :D
@stanfordcoffee
@stanfordcoffee 8 лет назад
+NeCtRiCkS Bolt catch: in both cases I am manipulating the bolt catch ,with my left hand behind the rifle, to demonstrate something else. The bolt will lock back on an empty magazine, or if you push down on the bolt catch while the charging handle has been fully pulled back. All other times it will advance forward. Safety selector: not sure why Stoner design a safety that way, It's just the way it works (on the AR15). I'm not sure about the M4, I've never had the opportunity to handle one. Cheers

One minor note on the magazine advice (to remove the bullets): the springs in the magazine are not aged by being compressed (i.e.: mag full of ammo), they may be left at full capacity with no wear, they actually age by repetitive motion of change of state of the spring, so be aware that taking unused ammo out of a magazine is actually wearing on the magazine spring. It is better for the magazine spring to leave ammo in place UNLESS of course there is a safety issue (like children potentially gaining access to the HW. Safety first.

I just recently saw a video of someone that left his mags loaded for 10+ years. when compared to a spring that wasn't in the loaded position the loaded spring was actually about an inch shorter. Although it will still work, just so you know it can change the spring. Maybe not all will do it but it can happen. but no loss of spring action from what I saw in that video.

Great video. Also worth mentioning - in the AR world, the term "carbine" can also refer to the length of the gas system, so 2 ARs can have the same barrel length (and both be generically classified as "carbines") but with different length gas systems (7.5" carbine, 9" mid-length or 13.5" rifle). As a newcomer to the AR I wasn't aware of this for a while.

Honestly they're very simple to tear down, and if you're that nervous about tearing it down there are mats that have breakdowns of every part and checklists that you can buy. It's a very good idea to tear it down after you shoot it so you can see just how simple it is and so you can see what little tools you might want. And don't be afraid to ask questions about cleaning and oiling the thing when you are in a sporting goods store. Chances are someone in there has one

Very good introduction to AR type rifles for people who may be non-owners and want to educate themselves on what the rifle is about; as well as those new owners who want to familarize themselves with controls, etc.

I’m a new owner of an AR-15 and had no idea on how to clean/take apart my rifle. This was by FAR, the best step by step video. Thank you for the video.

I've been watching multiple "Beginner" videos for the AR-15. This is the best one so far.

This is the best AR-15 basics tutorial on youtube. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with those barely entering the AR world.

I know it's old thankfully this video is still up. Thank you for the very clear and instructional video. Just bought my 1st AR and this was most helpful. It taught me why some AR's are cheaper than others. As I followed along taking my cheap one down, found metal shavings from the machining process. Glad I watched this before going to the range. Now to finish cleaning out burrs.

I know this video is an old video, but I just bought my first AR 15 and this is the best and most useful detailed video on RU-vid on the basics of disassembling and re assembling the carbine. Good job. Thank you.

How much did you pick up the Ruger for? At the moment, it's allocated. And it's also hard to find in California.
