Everyone asks where I find AR-15 stuff in stock or where I order from, so here you are: bit.ly/2trc7Kg
This is how I install my low profile gas blocks. It is a quick and easy trick to do but it has not failed me yet.

I always blow compressed air down inside the gas tube and adjust the gas block until I feel air coming out of the barrel then I tighten the s**t out of the set screws.

You should have measure the distance from the barrel journal shoulder to the gas port and the gas block port to the outside of the gas block to make sure they didn't machine the barrel journal for a hand guard cap...I do realize this video is 8 years old and your info was cutting edge for the time...

Low profile gas blocks have the gas port in the top side that feeds the gas tube drilled into them. In order to do this during manufacture, they drill through the bottom and then into the top of the inside of the gas block. Then they thread the bottom hole and put a set screw into it. This means if you remove the set screws and before installing the gas tube, you rotate the gas block 180 degrees, you can see EXACTLY how far you should offset from the shoulder, if any. You can also set up your centers with a pair of calipers if you are super anal retentive. You also see just how much wiggle room you really have. I've found that most give you at least a +/- of 5 degrees in any direction before you get close to impeding gas flow.
@seanmtactical6069
@seanmtactical6069 8 лет назад
I agree. I'm just explaining how to set up offset from the shoulder if you want (sometimes it's necessary if it's a non-typical block or shoulder). It also gives one a visual way to see their tolerances too. I've found most gas blocks initially leak a little too until they get carbon and copper fouling in the gaps and then stop leaking. This is usually a mag or two of ammo before it clogs up.
@HomesteadOnThePreserve
@HomesteadOnThePreserve 6 лет назад
Spot on Sean. By combining the above "left/right centering" using the penciled line and your "forward / rearward centering" technique you simply cant go wrong. As an added bonus, if you have feeler gauges , you can use them to fill the distance between shoulder and gas block (at whatever distance required) so when you rotate the gas block back to its normal position the feeler gauges keep that perfect "forward / rearward" distance.

Hi Sean,this was the best advice ever!.I slipped on a low profile gas block today and rotated it and it lined up perfect hard against the shoulder.What I would like to know is that good to go? Or should I allow .330mm where the hand Guard ring was?,I’m worried the gas tube will seat to far back even though the bolt closes fine.Or do they allow for that when manufactured.Its a Winham weaporny which had the pic a tiny type gas block on it,and going by the carbon stain it wasn’t perfectly centred on the hole either.

This is assuming the gas block is mil spec and should rest against the barrel collar. This is not always the case with low profile gas blocks and a gas port aligner is helpful ($10 piece of plastic - one time use unfortunately).

I put a piece of toothpick in to the port and cut it to flush with the barrel. Slide the block over it, Invert and let gravity pull the wood into the gas block port. When all is aligned, tighten the screws, and stake. Then run a cleaning rod down the barrel to break off the toothpick, and repeat.

The easy way to do this is with a piece of wire like a paper clip. Their is a video floating around on YT utilizing a plastic tool being sold for $10 that is a one time use which is crazy. Find the video and utilize the same method except with a paper clip cut to where it fits flush in the gas port. Slide the gas tube onto the barrel then flip the barrel over so the cut wire that was in the gas port falls into the hole of the gas block. Now you know for certain it is aligned. Tighten down the gas block as you normally would. Now either take a cleaning rod or a bore snake and jam the paper clip wire out of the gas port. If using a bore snake you will need to start with the paper clip wire up in the gas port and not in the barrel. Once the snake is sticking out both end of the barrel then turn the rifle back over so the paper clip wire falls back down into the barrel. It will then get hung in the bore snake and can be pulled out. Be sure you find where the tiny (now bent) wire goes and it is fully out of your gas port and barrel. I keep extra paper clips in my tool box just for this purpose. Just use the smallest diameter that fits very loose in the gas port. It should not fit tight at all and should move in and out of the gas port hole very easy.

Instead of using the Gas Port Line up kit being sold by Browells, Cut down a toothpick. Cut one end, then stick it in gas port in barrel. Spin it around while it's sticking in port and it will usually leave a mark. Cut it so it's flush with barrel. NOTE: Make it a semi-tight fit so it will move via it's own weight when barrel is rotated Remove it and clean up any burs, then position barrel with port in barrel facing UP. Put modified toothpick into port in barrel. Slide Gas Block on. Rotate barrel 180 degrees so barrel port is facing downwards. Tap, vibrate barrel a bit to make toothpick fall out of bore and slide into gas block. Rotate gas block to get a average of where center is. Tighten down gas block. Rotate barrel so gas port is UP..tap, hit barrel with hand so toothepick falls into bore. From chamber end... use AR clean rod without anything screwed into it... Slide it til it hits toothpick then give if a sharp rap. This will cut toothpick. Save the piece that comes out. Do same thing again. measure parts that come out. Compare to how long it was before cleaning rod sheared it into 2 pieces. Why use a toothpick / Vs a paperclip? Toothpick is made out of wood, is easily cut. TIP #1: To be on safe side, blow compressed air thru gas tube that mates with BCG to blow out any debris out of gas block and into bore of barrel. (Backflush) Blow out bore for good measure.. TIP #2: Measure the length of modified toothpick. Reason? Running clean rod down bore will cut into 2 pieces.. You want to make sure ALL of the toothpick gets removed. So.. Measure before and after, do TIP #1 .

Trying to find out the same question.How do you know if gap is needed?,my holes line up perfectly centred if the new block is hard against the shoulder so should I set it at this? Or will the gas tube be back to far and damage the gas key?,the factory fitted block was slightly forward with the hand garud cap on there as you can see the carbon dot it has left behind so should I set it at that which is about .330mm ?,understand not all gas blocks are the same but would like to know how do you know if your gas tube is at correct length? Bolt closes with not restricted either way

To the point and Concise are 2 different things. To the point this was. Concise, it definitely was not. You butted the gas block all the way up against the flange on the barrel.. A huge no no. What method did you use to make sure the gas port on the gas block was directly over the gas port on the barrel? To anyone watching, please keep looking until you find the proper way to install a gas block. the compressed air way from Wolf in Sheep's Clothing is not a bad idea...

Would be wise as well to find out frojm you barrel or gas block manufacture if you need to retain the .025 inch aspacing off of the gas block shoulder to compensate for the thickness or the handguard endcap that is unused on low pro blocks. Otherwise your gas port will not even be close or yoand the gas tube can stick inside the receiver to fare and be bent or damaged
@seanmtactical6069
@seanmtactical6069 8 лет назад
+djalkaline1 Not really. Even if its supposed to be there and you butt up the gas block, you still hardly ever impede gas flow. This is for all the major brands that make low profile gas blocks. There are some exceptions out there in both block and barrel, but figuring out if it's needed is fairly simple.

Nice vid! Watched this after watching your Geissele Mk8 vid. Is that YHM gas block designed to account for the generally required 0.030" gap (a remnant of the hand guard end cap)? From my experience, the gas block does not sit flush up against the shoulder of the barrel. Generally though, the hole in gas tube/gas block provides enough flexibility. The easiest way to know fore sure is to use a micrometer to measure the distance from the shoulder to the center of the gas port and then do the same on the end of the gas block to the center of the gas port in the gas block.

As far as I can remember, using a graphite on a part that gets very hot can lead to cracks due to the heat concentration in that localized spot. This is at least common practice in aviation, never is a pencil used on anything to do with high temp ducting or engine parts. Just a heads up.

I just installed a gas block and it worked perfectly I also left room as if I were putting an end cap there to install a handguard but I chose the free-float method instead but that slight Gap is still there I do not recall the exact measurement. @hairydogstail
@hairydogstail 2 года назад
Short stroking can be caused by many problems along the gas system. You should try a different bolt carrier to see if that helps. If not it can be a clocked gas block which is best to verify alignment with a bore scope. Then it could be a loose gas block to barrel journal, gas tube leak in the gas block, cracked gas block or cracked gas tube, out of spec gas tube button checked with a gas tube gauge, loose carrier key or an inefficient bolt carrier 3 bore..If all that checks out then your gas port is too small for the ammunition you are using...

@WeAreNotAlone69 6 лет назад
You can also use a toothpick vs those plastic pins. Takes about a minute to cut one end off, drop in gas port in barrel. Spin toothpick around a few things to mark the next cut needed (total length.).. Make sure it fills up the hole, but yet is loose enough it will move under it's own weight. Cut end sticking out of barrel.. Pesto you've made a line up pin.

+nsz85 I had thought that there would be some small piece of the gas block that would fit into the opening in the barrel (or vise-versa) in order to ensure that the two holes are lined up with each other. But it looks like it is possible to have the gas block secured to the barrel without being properly aligned with the gas port. So basically, when you install you a new gas block, do you have to fire/cycle the gun in order to be %100 sure that the gas block is correctly installed?
@nsz85
@nsz85 9 лет назад
+ChanChan3255 You need to make sure it is aligned. There is some wiggle room as the hole in the gas block is typically larger than the gas port in the barrel. If you watch this video and do what I did, you will have it aligned properly.

What brand of gas block is that? Do you think it will fit under a midwest industries key mod rail?

the key to your method is the business card. Cool idea of using flexible 90 degree square to index of the gas port shoulder.

Anyone know what kind of torque specs clamp on gas blocks use? Are you suppose to use thread lock or stake the screws?
@christaylor4086
@christaylor4086 6 лет назад
Staking can help and regular blue locktite will burn off.. There is a product called Flexbar Rocksett which is a high temp thread locker than will withstand 2,000 degrees F.

I hope you put more care into actually getting the pencil mark on the barrel properly centered IRL than you did in this video! Meanwhile, the spaghetti noodle trick still takes the cake for most outside the box approach, IMHO.

I'm installing an AA xlp, unable to find many vids on the installation. so I line it up, should it be pushed all the way back to the shoulder, or should I have a gap? The drive rod needs to fit 2 business cards between it and the gas block. will it then touch the block after removing the cards?
@Surviving65

and yes, first AR. decided to build it instead of buy it.

how can you determine the right gas block for a free float barrel? Is .750 standard? I'm just confused and don't want to purchase the wrong one. I have a .223/5.56 barrel 1/8 rot.
@gw9853
@gw9853 7 лет назад
Get a low profile gas block. And yes a .750 is standard the smaller size is for thin profile barrels. Good luck!

Because a bore scope is the best way to verify port alignment. He also didn't m,measure the gas block port to barrel port to journal shoulder fit..

If you are using set screws that interface with dimples you would be correct… but this is a clamp on (dimpleless) gas block attachment

Does there have to be space in between the gas block to compensate for the handguard cap to line up the holes or can the gas block just sit flush
@seanmtactical6069

+Khaosriged Not always, see my stand alone post from today on how to check.
@MCP-km6im
@MCP-km6im 8 лет назад
+Khaosriged ... +Sean M is correct. I previously had the same concern with spacing. On a related topic -- and Sean M can correct me if I'm wrong -- but it's also fairly simple to line up the gas block/gas tube simply by installing it. After installing your barrel, torquing your barrel nut and sliding the gas tube (that's already attached to your gas block) into the upper receiver, you're pretty much lined up. After that, tighten down your gas block set screws while making sure you're not twisting the gas tube. I have used this method for a couple of years when building ARs and have had no problems. Just my two cents.

I was considering this, however, if you shoot a lot in one sitting, this could be detrimental to your barrel. The carbon in the "lead" of the pencil, when heated enough changes the molecular layout of the steel causing cracks and eventual failure. I don't know what the temp range is for that, but I know on exhausts if you score it with a pencil, there will be a hole in the exhaust before too long.
@nsz85

No.
@fckinsanders2215
@fckinsanders2215 7 лет назад
Phil, I'm neither. What I said is a true statement, and your lack of understanding about said subject shows you have nothing intelligent to add to the conversation. Don't believe me about the pencils destroying exhausts go ahead and draw a big circle on your headers and let me know how that works out for you. Hope you got a few bucks saved to replace them.

F*ckin' Sanders is correct . What I do is instead of writing on the barrel /gas block is to use tape.. put markings on tape.. then peel it off when done.
