Like most of my RU-vid videos, this video is simply a record of what I did in the course of figuring out an issue. You're advised to skim through the video to see if there's something there for you. You may find yourself bored to tears if you're looking for a particular bit of information but you just watch the video from start to finish. You've been warned.
The executive summary is this:
1 - Dismount the motor and remove the back cap.
2 - Thoroughly spray out the motor from the back using electrical parts cleaner (I used CRC 03180 - other products may work but I know that this one did).
3 - Blow out the motor using compressed air (air in a can).
4 - Use a q-tip and the electrical parts cleaner to thoroughly clean the top of the motor bearing at its outer perimeter.
5 - Relubricate the motor bearing by applying oil to the top of the motor bearing while the motor is running; form a pool of oil that entirely covers the motor bearing at its outer perimeter; allow the motor to run for about 24 hours with the oil pooled; turn off the motor and wipe off all oil from the top of the motor.
6 - Remount the motor to the turntable, place the pulley part way on the shaft, put Loctite blue in the pulley inner diameter and slide pulley up and down to coat the Loctite on the upper motor shaft, then set the pulley at the proper height (I tried to avoid coating the entire length of the motor shaft in Loctite because that seems to be more than needed and may make future disassembly difficult).
7 - Wait for Loctite to cure then put belt in place and test.

I have worked on my personal turntables for years. They can fight you all along the way but, when you win it's priceless! Love my records dearly. Worth all the time an effort!

Just recently brought my AR XA back on line. It was not as easy some might think. In my case had to take the tone arm pivot cam apart and remove all that old grease. It was not tracking well. Also you have to adjust the pivot post to the exacting tension so when you lift the arm up above the record a good bit it should stay put. ALWAYS move your arm on the AR XA below the platter and then back up on to the record before playing. This is the cam tonearm release point. Sweet spot. You can disable this feature if you back the tonearm post ( unscrew ) away from its pivot point/cam but it only takes one time to make a mistake and kill a $75.00 to a $200.00 needle if it hits the record or the plinth by accident if the tone arm were to suddenly get out of your hand. I chose to keep it adjusted so this cannot happen as easily. It is now doing very well. I used Lubriplate No. 105 on the pivot cam cylinder after cleaning first. I hope this helps someone out.

I also finally broke down and bought ( The Q Up ) for the automatic tone arm lift at the end of the record. Priceless. Yeah, it is made of plastic, ugly but it works. Great not having to bolt to the AR XA totally manual turntable at the end of the record. Was about $56.00 bucks but worth it.

Very interesting thank you, i bought one of these Turntables about 5 years ago and the suspension needed adjusting so i put it to one side and never did it as i already had a working Thorens TD166 MkII but i will dig it out and get it working so Thank you very much for this video

Good luck! They are nice turntables so it would be worth the effort to get it going.

@@elvisandmick It clicks intermittently so it will be my winter project. I book marked this video when I do the project. When flipping the table, does oil leak from platter bearing? Appreciate your help.

@@jeffreypicciolo7706 Ah, good luck when you dive into it! Yes, when flipping the table, oil will come out of the platter well (but it shouldn't be much)..

It's my view that the issue here is a loose bushing. The brass bushing, I think, should not move with the pully shaft. Adding all that oil filled the gap thereby reducing the racket the motor was making. I'm guessing it will be silent until the lube drains away again. Try cleaning again, then carefully superglue the bushing into the frame of the motor...... THEN add oil.

It looks remarkably like a motor I just bought for a project of mine, a Hurst SP4023, purchased from Jameco last week. They're not expensive; you may want to consider buying one as a spare.

Hurst motor is cheap and noisy junk when it's brand spanking new and definitely NOT worth hassle. That noise seems to be like noise of the bent shaft.

Thanks for your video. I just added sewing machine oil to the motor spindle with the needle dropper without taking off the gear thingy. It had a similar clickity sound but now it is deathly quiet. You can't hear that is it on now.

"DO NOT LOSE ANY OF THE 2 PIVOT SCREWS or even the "brass counter weight screw" when doing this! You will not be able to go to a local hardware store to replace them. If you lose any of the tiny three screws it is game over. Go slow and only back them enough off to gain access. It almost happened to me.

Sorry about that accidentally hit send. Anyway, until I heard a Sota Sapphire I thought “The AR “ was as far as I needed to go up the chain. As a side note I have a AR XA with manual and it states under General Information that “A slight amount of vibration can normally be felt in the drive pulley when the motor is off, This is normal and harmless” Just an FYI. Did you have any success with change in capacitor?
@elvisandmick
@elvisandmick 3 года назад
the capacitor change is still on the to-do list /sigh/ this project table has been on the back burner for way too long!

How did you remove the pulley from the motor to begin with? You mentioned it was held on with something like glue and I'm unable to remove mine by simply pulling it. Thanks
@elvisandmick
@elvisandmick 4 года назад
The way I've seen done (and it worked for me) is to use two spoons as levers - one on either side of the pulley so you pop the pulley up but don't bend the motor shaft.

I just got the AR Turntable, its quiet but I notice the vibration even when turned off. Did you ever get to the bottom of that? I hear a slight hum on deadwax and it disappears when I unplug it.
@elvisandmick
@elvisandmick 6 месяцев назад
I learned that the vibration is nornal to the AR design (I have another manufacturer's turntable that also does this). One leg of the motor wiring is always connected to the power plug, even when the turntable is switched off.
@txc500
@txc500 6 месяцев назад
@@elvisandmick I noticed a vibration in the belt (I'm embarrassed to say it's the original, but I just got it last night) between the pulley and the platter. I got a couple drops of oil onto the motor and it seems like it became much less. I'll keep working at it. Overall a really nice turntable except for some veneer peeling and chipped off unfortunately.

How did you get the pulley wheel off the shaft?
@elvisandmick
@elvisandmick 10 месяцев назад
I used two spoons as levers. First, measure the gap between the top of the turntable and the bottom of the pulley so you know where it should sit when you replace the pulley. Cover the turntable surface around the pulley with blue painters tape, to protect the surface. Then place the bowl of a spoon, face up, under each side of the pulley, pushing down on the handles of the spoons to lever upwards under the pulley.

The OEM motors are horrible. Even in good condition, I heard noise in the quiet spots of music. I ended up pouring molten lead into the belt hub and then balancing. MUCH better. I greatly suggest purchasing a newer motor solution now available. Best mod for these.
@stevephilipczak1464
@stevephilipczak1464 4 года назад
I can attest to that about the OEM motor. Just NOT a good quality motor. I have one on my bench now. I got it running quiet, but the speed is low, and no way to adjust. Belt is good. I'm not even gonna waste my time trying to rejuvenate it. And buying another used one is pointless. What's to say it will be any better? The pulley design is crap as well. So, replacement low voltage motor is in order, IF the owner wants to spend the money. Generally, a nicely designed vintage TT, but motor is most definetly the weak point.

I do hope you oiled the bottom bearing before letting it "run in"!!!! You know, that "by design", there MUST be a bottom bearing, and that you shouldn't expect that, by oiling the top bearing, any oil will reach the bottom bearing! The probable reason the motor quieted at all was because the parts cleaner lubricated the lower bearing, but that will soon burn off!!!! PLEASE OIL THE BOTTOM BEARING, PLEASE!!!!!
@elvisandmick
@elvisandmick Год назад
If there is a bottom bearing, it is not accessible because it is hidden by the armature even when the bottom cap is removed from the motor. See
