First experiment with dual-mode AR Sandbox, combining an AR projection-mapped display inside the physical sandbox, and a virtual 3D / VR view of the same terrain and water flow on a secondary display (in this case a small desktop monitor).

It looks like, when running at 0.25%, the water dynamics are muted - when it hits the obstruction it isn't boiling over and becoming turbulent. It would be nice to run it at full speed, and then use a screen capture video to replay it and slow it down later. then the dynamics would be more realistic, and you could see everything in your own time as you step through. just a thought. AWESOME concept and video either way. well done

Sorry Sir you have to add to your model the erosion factor Because When water runs along, the soil (sand) will automatically be eroded and the water left its marks.

That is true, but infeasible as the sand cannot be moved under program control. Even if the code did model erosion, there would be no way to affect the physical sand surface, and the real and virtual surfaces always have to match for the projection to work.

Yes that's right, we can't make the sand in movement because all it's based on graphic simulation ...but we can think about it. thank you

Are you going to experiment with the htc Vive or the Lighthouse technology from Valve?

+IGEL ger I have a Vive DK1 and a Vive Pre, but I currently can't use them for my software due to lack of Linux drivers. I've talked to Valve about that, and they might address it soon.

Regarding the virtual view, could one put an physical marker, like an styrofoam arrow to the sandbox, kinect detects it's position and direction on the sandbox, and the virtual view position is adjusted accordingly in the monitor?

Can a "GameMaster" use AR to change the dynamic of 3D VR environnment in real-time and vice versa?

@okreylos Would it be possible to have changes take effect instantly(no delay) but have the computer's representation more gradually conform to the sensor data? In other words, instead of having the computer representation exactly match the sensor data on every frame(which causes problems with the hand and with water physics), calculate the difference between the current state and the sensor data and only add a percentage of the change to the computers model of the sand.(There would likely still be a sight visual delay but it would look more like the land is sinking away or growing out) This would probably fix the problem with the water bouncing all over the place as the land would no longer be constantly readjusting due to the sensor giving fluctuating data.

+derstreber2 That's an IIR (infinite impulse response) or recursive low-pass filter. The "SandyStation" system uses it, as do other similar projection-mapping systems. It's an alternative, but I don't particularly like it, as it only reduces measurement noise but doesn't remove it entirely (contour lines would shift, and water would "bubble" continually), and any objects moving above the sand affect the surface immediately and all the time, albeit subtly.

Hi there! I'm currently building my own AR Sandbox with a colleague of mine and we can not for the life of us get the rainmaker and water simulator to work. I was curious could you post your start up command prompt? The topographical map shows up perfectly when we enter this prompt: "./bin/SARndbox -uhm -fpv" but sadly the rainmaker/water doesn't seem to be working... All the Best, Aedan

+RC-1290 Yes, it's a custom water simulation based on the vertically-integrated Navier-Stokes equations, implemented as a set of GLSL fragment shaders.
