Chris! My class of 7th and 8th graders just started building parts for the AR3 this week. Since we do some machining, we are doing all our own aluminum too. What an inspiring video, something really cool about seeing them move in sync - making the physical, squishy world precise and automated. I've learn so much in Cad, with programming and general design ideas when making a camera project for a friend. I find however soooooo much time has to be spent thinking, and re-doing ideas as you come across issues and more efficient ways of doing things. It's fun but takes a lot of time... I do love how by just lying in bed you can mentally improve a design. Do you have any ways that you shortcut straight to a good design first as I tend to find I over design things with high part counts and have to reduce them later. Do you have a workshop in the UK ? Would be cool to incorporate a short visit as part of a summer motorbike trip if Boris lets us out. Thank you, Ivan G-S
@anninrobotics

Hello, thank you for the comments. when I start with a new design I typically evaluate all the components that are off the shelf that I could possibly use and then start selecting the lowest cost versus the most practical and build my designs around those items and then test and redesign from there. No unfortunately I'm not in the UK, but if at some point in the future I am able to have a full size business and you are in the US I would love to have visitors.

Awesome as usual my man. Thanks for doing this. Do have some kind of solid models available? I don't know of a way to machine aluminum parts from a mesh, and fusion360 does a poor job at converting meshes to solids ( haven't found anything that does it well).

Thank you very much. I do have the solidworks models on the robot kits page for a small fee that helps cover licensing and development stuff.

@@anninrobotics Thanks. I have a hass mini mill. The dimensions x and y are 16x12. Before I run off and buy the models, off the top of your head, do you know if my mill is big enough to make these parts? I also have a 600mmx900mm router. Maybe I can make the arms from acrylic if they are too long for my mill.

It s way more complicated it s shown. A lot of work to build (see my recent Instagram updates). Work instruction is phenomenal, a lot of soldering. I m so excited to see how it s going to run. I am almost done.

Very nice project Chris. I was wondering, How did you solve the issue of gearbox backlash?
@anninrobotics
@anninrobotics 3 года назад
They are planetary gears, they have a very small amount backlash but with the arm in compression it is vary accurate, a small amount of backlash to be expected with a low cost planetary option like this.

@@anninrobotics I see. Yeah, I can imagine that harmonic drives are not an option here. In any case it looks very solid, thanks for sharing all of this. Btw did you also calculated all the direct and inverse kinematics? that is a nightmare for 6dof robots!
@anninrobotics
@anninrobotics 3 года назад
@@victorfesto yes I have done all those calculations, I have a series of videos on the kinematics on my channel that I put together on that.

cudos for making this open-source wow we will use this on our school building it will be a fun class project. Chris do u think ur arm could do CNC and 3d printing at some point in the future?

you did a great job on this, i'm just looking at getting a 3d printer, what size bed would i need to build your robot?
@anninrobotics
@anninrobotics 3 года назад
Hello, thank you. a 200mm x 200mm bed will fit all the components for the robot.
