Note: Fortunately, this recording took place in 2006, when Fr. George Plathottam (1933-2016) was healthy enough to go through the strain of a day-long recording session. His unique voice continued to be in good shape until a few months before his death in 2016. He chose a historical location for the recording, the Old Cathedral Church at Pala in the Kottayam district of Kerala.
Fr. Plathottam was gifted with a melodious voice and a passion for the Syriac music heritage. He trained several young seminarians and priests to celebrate the solemn sung Qurbana in Syriac. The three servers in this video are now priests who continue the musical legacy of Fr. Plathottam. Bishop Joseph Kallarangatt (diocese of Pala), who celebrates Syriac Qurbana frequently, acknowledged that his Excellency was lucky to have received training from Fr. Plathottam (see Aramaic Project 15, • Aramaic Project-Part 1... )
I am immensely grateful to his Excellency Mar Jacob Angadiath, Bishop of St. Thomas Syro Malabar Catholic diocese of Chicago, for introducing Fr. Plathottam to me, in May 2006. I listened to one of his Syriac chants and realized the uniqueness of his voice, which evokes devotion in the minds of the listeners even without understanding the meaning of the song text. Bishop Angadiath agreed to my suggestion to document Fr. Plathottam’s distinct style of celebrating the Syriac sung Qurbana. The bishop provided financial assistance to organize the recording. This video may serve as a source material for researchers as well as prospective celebrants. In 20014, Fr, Plathottam sang for me the famous Syriac chant ēdtā pūšlēk, the farewell song from the funeral services for priests of the Syro Malabar Church. A transcription (in staff notation) of his rendering is included in my chapter “The Survival Story of the Syriac Chants among the St. Thomas Christians in South India,” in The Oxford Handbook of Music and World Christianities (Oxford University Press, 2016; see www.oxfordhandb.... We pray that this saintly priest continues to intercede for everyone who supports the Aramaic Project.

കേരള സുറിയാനി സഭയുടെ സ്വന്തം പാരമ്പര്യം. പിന്നീട് മലയാളീകരിച്ചു ഇതിന്റെ ഭംഗി നഷ്ടപ്പെടുത്തി. മലങ്കരക്കാർ ഈ പാരമ്പര്യം അന്ത്യോക്യൻ സുറിയാനി ക്രമത്തിൽ കുറച്ചയൊക്കെ ഇപ്പോഴും പിന്തുടരുന്നു.

@@abeninan4017 Our church began to translate the Syriac liturgy into Malayalam before the Second Vatican Council started. The Second Vatican Council has done away with many sacred traditions but this was not one of them. In fact, the Second Vatican Council through "Orientalium Ecclesiarium" has asked us to return back to our traditions and fully restore anything and everything that was either lost or forcefully taken away.

@@TheCMSIndia The reality is, there are many young people, including myself, who are actually interested in the old Syriac liturgy. Sadly, not everyone actually values this wonderful tradition, especially Sunday-only Nasranis. One day, if God wills it, we will have this liturgy back in every church.

The biggest problem in our church is that we are unaware of our own identity . We have our rich and vibrant east syriac liturgy written in the language spoken by Isho M'shiha. It is time that we fall back to the traditions that once thrived in our motherland. We are Mar Thoma Nasranis filled with the Zeal of Mar Thoma sleeha and we must reclaim this identity.

Why can't we just go back to our beautiful traditional mass?! Our new "mass" is nothing but a joke, let alone the "Latin" Novus Ordo mass. I've been blessed to assist a Syriac mass during the feast of S. Alphonsa in our church. I've got to tell you, I cried so much that day; felt like the space between Calvary and the altar didn't really exist at that point. Catholics have been robbed of their mass.

SYRO MALANKARA , JACOBITE , ORTHODOX CHURCH USED THE WEST SYRIAC (ANTIOCHEAN) SYRO MALANKARA AND JACOBITE AND ORTHODOX CHURCH HAS TRANSLATED THE HOLY MASS LITURGY INTO MALAYALAM AND SYRIAC SONGS AND PRAYERS WERE INCLUDED . THERE IS MUCH DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EAST SYRIAC AND WEST SYRIAC QUANDHISHA ALAHA EAST SYRIAC QUADISHAT ALOHO WEST SYRIAC .OCCASIONALLY THIS SYRIAC LITURGY MAY BE USED TO KEEP THIS ANCIENT AND HOLY LANGUAGE ALIVE .THE ARAMAIC WAS THE LANGUAGE SPOKEN BY OUR LORD JESUS AND HIS DISCIPLES AND IT HAS ORIGINATED FROM ABRAHAMS TIMES . I am in my early twenties, and I've seen enough butchering of traditional hymns. The overuse of keyboard presets have done enough harm. Some the syriac hymns are made to sound like malayalam songs. Usage of old instruments and eastern melodies should be restored.

@@bijogeojose7209 and Cijoy, while I appreciate your view point, times have changed & people of God deserves sensible modernization (not excess of it). Liturgy & Sacred music have always undergone changes over time as inspired by the Holy Spirit. (we don't use the same liturgy Jesus has used, or Peter/Paul has used or which was used in the early centuries). The Church has always been& should be forward looking.

@@JohnShafinJose Yes the church has evolved from the time of the Apostles. And this evolution was highly influenced by the culture and traditions of the places the Apostles preached in. That's why we have different liturgies while sharing the same essence of the eucharist. Sacred music is meant to convey spirituality, not to be enjoyed. The best example I can think of is the difference between gregorian chants and new age protestant songs. Both genres emphasize faith. But the chants are made specifically for the church service, while new-age songs can be sung in a rock concert. The reason many young people go into orthodox churches is because of the richness and piety we see in those traditions. So the way to move forward in faith is to actually go back to our traditions.

@Younan Yaqoob There are 2 points to remember before joining : 1. The Nasrani church existed before the Church of the East became independent. The early church fathers such as St. Ephrem the Syrian and St. Theodore have affirmed the position of the papacy before the schism. We were one church. So, if we intend to go back to our roots, we should also be in full communion with the church of Rome. 2. After the schism, the traditions of the Church of the East was heavily influenced by Islam (like how Nasrani church was influenced by Latin tradition). As a result, they destroyed all icons saying that they were idols. Now the church of the east no longer upholds icons (while the Khudra says otherwise). Also, new Arabic tunes were adopted into the liturgies and pronunciation. Luckily, the Syro-Malabar church still uses old melodies and chants. So by joining the church of the east, we would also have to adopt their Islam-influenced cultures. We can remove the Latin elements form our church while still remaining in the Syro-Malabar church.

@Al Usthadoli Avoid using such language. Each liturgy has it's own traditions and practices. So let them be. The Latin liturgy is just as valid as our Syriac liturgy.
