Aranet4 CO2 sensor is very nice. Batteries last for a loooong time (I think I got over 2 years from mine with bluetooth on). I find id hard to see the use case for environmental radiation sensor. Radiation in ambient is pretty constant and if you're afraid of someone bringing a source nearby, you better have some fast reacting alarming sensor. An interesting product to see anyway.
@albinklein7680
@albinklein7680 2 месяца назад
What you need a CO2 sensor for? Serious question. A CO sensor is great if you have a wood stove in your room. But a CO2 sensor makes no sense at all unless you run a professional greenhouse.
@hoggif
@hoggif 2 месяца назад
@@albinklein7680 CO2 sensor can for example be used to monitor/meter amount of ventilation. Too low ventilation and too many people => CO2 levels get sky high. It is an indication to increase ventilation. CO sensor is a safety device, very rarely CO2 sensor is and when you have a suffocation risk due to CO2 you want something more robust than Aranet.
@jonlitchfield8888
@jonlitchfield8888 2 месяца назад
Yes i wondered the same! But obviously there is a non industrial market, even if niche, for sensors such as these. I can see maybe new baby owners, health purists, and the ignorant paranoid investing in these, but thats all. Did u get yr co2 one for any real or perceived co2 threat, or just cause its a nifty and interesting device?
@chrisgj198
@chrisgj198 2 месяца назад
@@albinklein7680Because all humans breathe out CO2, and some humans who are infected also breathe out viruses (covid, flu, measles etc.), the CO2 reading is one of the simplest ways to estimate your risk of getting infected in a certain place. For example if you haven't been burning things, and the reading is 800ppm, then 1% of the air you are inhaling has recently been inside someone else. The reading outdoors is normally about 420ppm. If the reading is 2500ppm (like in a lot of schools) then 5.5% of the air you are breathing has recently been inside someone else. If the reading is under 500ppm, then the ventilation is very good, like in the parliament building after they upgraded the ventilation early in 2020, before deciding that they would not upgrade the ventilation in the schools.

Seems like a pointless gimick. Its not a dosimeter you can carry around to check your personal dose. And it is also not a typical geiger counter to pick up on accute sources of radiation, reacts too slowly for that. Whats the point of just placing it in your house? There are radiation sensors in any larger city, so you can just check what the background radiation in the area is. Unless you live directly inside an uranium mine or something, i don't see the point. Seems like the sort of thing people just buy to sort of "feel safe", but it doesn't actually make them any safer.

@jort93z

@@joinedupjonThis is not precise enough to measure radon levels. Its very little radon all things considered. It affects humans more than something like a chunk of uranium ore sitting on the shelf because we breathe in air all day. most types of radiation don't penetrate the skins, but when we breathe radon in, we already got it into our body. And even for something like gamma rays, the power is calculated with distance CUBED, so a radiation source right next to you or even inside you(like radon) is much, much more powerful than one just a few meters away.
@somejoe7777
@somejoe7777 2 месяца назад
The biggest thing I see that makes it not very useful is the inability to measure larger radiation rates and doses. To me, this device is a disaster/war device. Being able to measure only up to 100 mRem/hr and a total of 100 Rem is not very useful. Those rates and totals are below the threshold that threatens health. You need to be able to measure up into the range where acute radiation sickness symptoms would appear. For this purpose, it needs to measure up to 100 Rem/hr and 1000 Rem total. Those are the useful numbers that could assist medical staff in treating the ARS. Otherwise, it's not really useful in a disaster scenario.

Agree with other comments, what is the point if the device only detects certain ionising (and hence harmful) radiation types, especially without a disclaimer to alert the user that Ok may mean not Ok!😨 No response to Americium 241!, yet alpha particle bombardment can cause serious cellular damage.😵‍💫

@@jort93z Ok, I'm not a radiophysical expert, and happy to be corrected. But I have used hand held devices in my occupation as a professional geological surveyor, where using a vacuum tube detector that will record radiation across a wide spectrum, smoke detector isotopes off the scal!! natural geological occurrences (potassium, uranium isotopes,..) There is of course a vital difference between instantaneous exposure, as in a patient undergoing dental X-ray, and long term exposure in a nuclear facility. So where does this device fit in a world of professional experience??
@zebo-the-fat
@zebo-the-fat 2 месяца назад
Alpha has very low penetrating power, probably won't pass through the skin, the big danger is if an alpha emitter is swallowed, allowing the radiation directly into the body.
@jort93z
@jort93z 2 месяца назад
@@mikemccormac9368glass already stops most alpha and beta radiation. So if it was a normal vaccuum tube(i presume you are referring to a geiger-müller tube), it would not detect alpha radition. Doesn't penetrate the skin either, mostly an issue if ingested. If you want to measure alpha radiation, you need a special type with a "window" at the end. This windows is made of mica or a similar material in order to allow radiation to pass. But it'll also only work if you point the window at the source. However, since you mentioned Americium 241, keep in mind that Americium 241 also produces some gamma radiation which might be detected. There are some metastable results in the decay chain, which emit gamma rays when they decay to a lower energy state. You need to consider the whole decay chain, as you will never have 100% pure Americium 241, it will immediately start decaying into Neptunium-237 and so on. There are other types of harmful radiation as well, UV-C for example, which a geiger müller counter can't measure at all.
