ARB canopy vent

I have installed a ARB Canopy Vent onto my dual cab ute. This is to try to minimise the dust build up inside the tub of the ute when driving on dusty outback roads. In this video I film what is going on inside the tub when vent is open & then closed.

Anything ARB is over rated and over priced. There are two vents in the tub if you cover them up it will stop a lot of dust. Love your outback vids keep coming 👍

Thank you for the positive comments. I am interested in the location of the vents in the tub that you mentioned. Can you pinpoint them for me? I thought that I had covered every hole that I could find on it but I could have missed these. Glad you like the vids.

Yes ARB is expensive but as the saying goes you get what you pay for and ARB are the most copied bar work and they have to pay for all of the development costs of their products that everyone else plagues.

I looked at a canopy at ARB HQ the other day and it was mounted in a flat space on the forward edge of the canopy. I am looking at fitting a vent to my NP300 canopy which has the flat space at the front section of the roof. I am trying to research the worth of fitting one and noted that you said that ARB told you that was the mounting location for you classic canopy for your vehicle and was wondering whether or not it did actually have the flat space in front of the two center ribs and if you believe it would make a difference to the air flow.

Hi Mark. My canopy (CL44C) has ribs leading from front to rear with no flat space at the front at all. This was the reason that I mounted mine at the rear. From an operational point of view I think the front mounting would probably be more efficient although when I observed what was happening to the ribbons the place of mounting may not be critical. My main reason for putting a vent in at all is to try to reduce the intake of dust into the rear tub space by building up a pressure differential to stop dust from entering in the first place. I will be heading north next week (after the cyclone has passed ) so I will begin to understand if my theory has worked. I have also added a curtain which hangs down to the tailgate & which, (hopefully) will at least hold back any dust which enters through the tailgate. I have also tried to seal the tailgate with rubber strips & double sided tape. If none of these work I will give up & eat dust!! Good luck with your installation.

@@dougrorison1211 I will be interested to see how you go on your adventures. As a side note when I was in the Army if we were travelling in the outback in soft top Landrovers we would leave the rear tarp down and we would roll the sides up and we would have virtually no dust inside.

@@markpickthall7440 Yes Mark I think the problems we experience with dust is due to the fact that we enclose the area & there is a pressure difference. I had a Land Rover Discovery before the Nissan & it just sucked the dust in through the rear door seals. I did toy with the idea of not putting the canopy onto the back of the Nissan & mounting my roof top tent onto a structure above the tub but thought that this did not give me enough security for items inside the tub when the vehicle was unattended so the canopy went on. I have never asked guys who have this arrangement how they get on but it would be interesting to know if they have dust problems.

Do you happen to know the dimensions of the vent and the hole saw diameter you used. I have been to a couple of ARB stores, but there is no stock. I need to order one, but I still have no idea if one will fit my canopy. I have been trying to find fitting instructions etc, but have not been able to find anything. Did the vent come with a cutting template? Cheer Dave

Hi Dave. The overall dimension is about 270mm x 100mm & the hole size is about 50 mm. If you have a flat surface on your canopy you might be able to fit a metal scupper vent from a caravan. I only got this one because it was in stock locally but I sometimes think a metal one might have been better. The ARB did come with a template from memory

do you get water in the canopy, looks like it should install the other way?
@dougrorison1211
@dougrorison1211 2 года назад
Hi Robert. I put it facing the front to try & force air into the tub to increase the pressure & keep dust out. Where I travel it is usually dry & if it rains I just close it.

How did it go at keeping dust out for you?
@dougrorison1211
@dougrorison1211 3 года назад
It worked well. I also had a curtain which covered the tailgate so hardly any dust at all in the tub.

@@dougrorison1211 awesome. I’m heading up the cape soon and was going to order one to try keep the dust out. So you hang a curtain as well along the back door?
@dougrorison1211
@dougrorison1211 3 года назад
@@Beyondthebackyard-au yes, I got my wife to make a curtain out of an old bed sheet & hung it from the internal bars which strengthen the canopy. I just used cable ties to hold it to the bars & can fold it up when I am on the bitumen. My Navarra has a drop down tailgate & a lift up canopy window so I make sure the bottom of the curtain is held in place by the tailgate when it closes.

Awesome, thanks for the tips. I will try the same thing :)

Scupper vents of caravans do the same job.. about $40
@dougrorison1211
@dougrorison1211 3 года назад
Thanks for the advice ozskipper. I did look at different types of vents but the ARB was supposed to be built for my canopy. I would have preferred a scupper but the surfaces on this canopy were not wide enough to enable me to fix it to the roof. I do think now that I could have made a metal one fit nicely. Hindsight eh?

@@dougrorison1211 Yes.. I did wonder if the width may be a problem.. best of luck.
