that reminds me of a story. on a written pipefitter test. the question asks to calculate how many gallons of water are in 20 feet of 6 inch pipe. Fitter scratches his head and says " I dont even know how long a gallon of water is"

Looking back on it, this man and his free content seriously taught me more about welding than my high school AND college welding instructors ever did up here in ND. i would go home and binge on his content and then go to class the next day and practice it. Now 10 years later im a home owner and landlord. God bless.

You say this is the second or third thing you do in welding school, but that is the first thing I did in my course. So far I've only worked with 6010 1/8 and 5/32 first on flat plate, then horizontal, and currently on horizontal fillet. About 6 weeks in maybe? Haven't been keeping track. Your videos have been a huge help as have Steve Bleile. Both of you are so friendly it's very welcoming.

Thank you for another great video. You inspired me to break out some of my seldom-used 3/32" 6011 and start a pad. Good tip on using a bucket of water; keeps the pad from getting hotter and hotter and hotter. This allowed me to run bead after bead, meanwhile, my little Lincoln 180 amp buzz box, (with home-built rectifier), was getting hotter and hotter and hotter. Don't know by how much I exceeded the 20% duty cycle, but I still couldn't put my hand on the transformer 10 minutes after I called it quits! Doh!

I had a flashback to 1984 watching this video. You sound exactly like my old welding teacher, Terry Block, at San Diego City College. He started us off on 6011, and after we got comfortable with striking an arc he switched us to 6010, because that's what they used in the shipyards. I remember one night he had me run 6013, just to see what it was like, then it was back to 6010. Next was 7018. Another night he gave me some 7024 and 7028 to practice with. It ran like butter. So easy. The it was back to 6010 roots and 7018 stringers and cover passes.

I love to hear the old school stories like that. I heard of a brazing test on round stock where brazing overlay was done and then the part was chucked up in a lathe and cut till smooth...if there were inclusions, you failed. how bout this one...at my school we had to weld a 4 foot long vertical tee. Guys who like to hang around the coke machine too much were made to wear their 4 foot tee joint on their neck anytime they were outside the booth.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jody has some background in education or pedagogical theory. He's always talking about intention, taking chances, connecting one lesson to the one before and after it, etc., and his instruction seems very well planned (as if with a consistent focus on intention and learning objectives). This would have a lot to do with why his videos are so informative and effective. It's refreshing :-)

We were joking about this at work: How much weld do you need to deposit to get anywhere? Which led to the idea of having a scale, so you could weigh each student's practice piece before and after... SO, one of the requirements of a class might be that you have to burn up fifty pounds of rod or something. Five kilos is a lot!

@leonardpearlman4017
@leonardpearlman4017 4 года назад
You can easily change the shade of your helmet filter! I think all helmets come with a Shade 10, but you can buy anything from Shade 5 to 13 or 14 I think. Just go up one number, they're only a few dollars. You might want to change for different situations, so it's well to have a little collection of them, plus a bunch of the clear cover pieces which tend to get burnt up.

I have so many problems using those 6010, 6011 rods I just cant them, anyway my teacher says that we really don't need to clean after every pass because the 6010 electrodes are fast freeze rods that will burn off any slag. Now I dont know if thats what is causing my horrible welds but I really need to change my technique, amps, or clean up after every pass.
@bloodtrack12
@bloodtrack12 9 лет назад
You still need to clean them but to say you dont need to clean at all is bullshit, cleanliness is godliness in welding as well as other things. Them being fast freeze just means that they wont get all runny and waterfall like 7018 will when doing vertical or overhead welding if you're doing it wrong, also if you've doing a groove test, a 6010 root does not need a back strip but if you're doing 7018 root you do because of the properties of the rod.

Great video, it helped me out a lot, but i have a few questions. What kind of current did you set your welder on? DCEP, DCEN, or AC? What was your amperage set on? I usually have mine on at 100A.
@DuchessofEarlGrey
@DuchessofEarlGrey 9 лет назад
Chris Sedberry DCEP is required for 6010. The last digit not only tells the electrode coating's composition (in this case, cellulose and sodium) but it gives the required current as well. Amperage requirements are affected by the diameter of the electrode. According to a chart I was given for school, 100A is only good for 1/8" 6010. 100A is too hot for 3/32" and too cold for 5/32".

6013 is best for thiner materials , clean metal, low Penetration, high build up, low spatter, easy Slag and spatter clean up, pretty beads where grinding isn't wanted. 6011 is a deep Penetrating "hotter" arc rod. best suited for burning through rust, paint, oils, dirt, galvanized and poor fit up situations. hard to master, high spatter with very clingy slag. to have a good looking bead is challenging. lots of cleanup. 6010 is the same as 6011, yet has more weld metal deposition. best suited for high filling situations.

6010 works great for training because it's harder to make "pretty" beads. This about practice of a necessary skill , not visually satisfying results! We took students off the block and had them passing 6G pipe tests in 19 weeks, but they welded their arses off as they should. Want to get hired? Learn to work HARD and pass bend tests. Bend tests don't lie.

Are you using the 6010 with Ac or DC? I read somewhere that 6010 was for use with DC current and 6011/6013 was used with AC current.

DC electrode positive. you are right 6010 is only for DC so if all you have is an AC stick welder, then 6011 works pretty well.

Wait so if a bead looks really smooth, I made it wrong? I've been whipping back and faster than in the video and my welds have come out looking more like a 7024 bead.

I am trying to learn with 6011 with ac. I have a very hard time striking the arc; the rod always wants to stick.

My beads are not close enough but when I try to get closer to the other bead the I end up covering the whole bead instead of overlapping half

Why are most of the welding jobs for a new guy around $15-$18/hour and typically ask for 1-2 years experience?? How can one get experience if they don’t have experience first to even get a job? I see so many people saying there’s big money in welding yet when I look for jobs they all are around $15-$18/hour…that doesn’t seem like big money to me..not compared to most other jobs.

Hi folks. Rapid question on the 6010 : what are the minimum characteristics of a welding machine to run them well? Is the 6011 type more forgiving about the equipment? My machine is a Telwin ADVANCE TIG227MV, if it may help. (Side note, I write from Italy and the 6011 is quite rare)
