The original version was sung by Francisco Alves with orchestration by Radames Gnattali in the late 1930s. The songs composer Ary Barroso wrote the original Portuguese lyrics, which are beautiful but completely different from the English lyrics. I really like this version though it reminds me of the Asylum Street Spankers version, which was the first version of this magnificent song I ever heard. Thank you very much for uploading.
I've honestly never seen a bad cover of this song. It's like there's no way you could go wrong if you try it. I definitely recommend watching the 1985 movie Brazil; it kind of makes one love the song even more.
Brazil, where hearts were entertaining June We stood beneath an amber moon And softly whispered, "Someday soon" We kissed and clung together Then - tomorrow was another day The morning found us miles away With still a million things to say And now, the twilight moves the skies above Recalling thrills of our love There's one thing I'm certain of Return, I will, to old Brazil Brazil, where hearts were entertaining June We stood beneath an amber moon And softly whispered, "Someday soon" We kissed and clung together Then - tomorrow was another day The morning found us miles away With still a million things to say And now when twilight moves the skies above Recalling thrills of our love There's one thing I'm certain of Return, I will, to old Brazil
Wowee, had no idea this was a cover - you learn something new every day! This is just great, the Arcade Fire are just so melodically rich. Winning all the way to Rio!
if I've seen the movie (which I've said I've seen) then it's obvious I know arcade fire wasn't the original artist, they weren't even around to cover it in the 80's, this is a cover, this is a theme song to a brazil, thanks for your lovely comments
My mistake, you are absolutely correct. I'd thought that Django's version was the original. You learn something new every day! Well, despite my incorrect statements, I still recommend you listen to his cover! Sorry about that!
You should definitely give the suburbs album a listen; this is one of their early albums funeral (i recommend rebellion(lies) and in the backseat) hehe
To me Funeral is their best album, most people like the Suburbs more though. This is more art rock and indie while suburbs is more rock. My favorite arcade fire song is “Neighborhood 1 (Tunnels)” but the whole album is beautiful
+dakkehdak I found in on a '45 as the B side to "Cold Wind" although I listen to this more often than Cold Wind. It's a pretty dope clear vinyl pressing
The original Brazil is PLAYED by Django Reindhardt's trio. It is a FANTASTIC piece and I strongly recommend you listen to the original version. As a HUGE fan of Django's playing and an equally passionate fan of Arcade Fire, this cover might as well be from one of my daydreams. Thanks for having great taste, Arcade Fire.
Django Reindhardt's trio and Arcade Fire are FANTASTIC but FYI the original version was sung by Francisco Alves with orchestration by Radames Gnattali in the late 1930s. The song's composer Ary Barroso wrote the original Portuguese lyrics and the title is "Aquarela do Brasil" :)
yes, mr. yellowhammer...bring that european doom and gloom to the cheerful american song...what else could you possibly do?...but where is the lana del the rey to wail some back vocals to it, sadly?
