The Sega Saturn edition of "Baku Baku Animal" is on my long-term "pick it up one of these days" wishlist, so consider me gobsmacked that it also got released on the Sega Master System... in 1996?! That's crazy! The Saturn gave up the ghost in the US only a year or two later... I would think this HAS to be one of those games created for the still-thriving, practically-unkillable Brazilian SMS market, right? Gotta be... In any case, I have to give kudos to whoever designed the SMS port, because it looks and sounds fantastic! The action on the SMS port is a little slower, the faux-3D is less convincing, and it isn't attempting anything graphically ambitious enough to make me say it looks 32-bit or even 16-bit, but those are the only negative things I can possibly say about this. It looks lovely as an 8-bit rendition of this title, and I bet it would easily hold up to some repeated playthroughs.
The Saturn version of this game is so great and it's easily my favorite version. While I found the SMS version to be underwhelming in comparison I still think it holds up well because all of the core gameplay mechanics are there. It's not like you need fancy graphics to make a game like this fun and the fun factor remained intact. I will say though when it comes to 8 bit ports I think the GG version of this is better but then again it's apples and oranges with handheld games compared to something made for a TV. Overall this is an underrated gem no matter what system you play it on.
I still haven't played the Saturn or arcade version of Baku Baku, but I've had the Windows 95 PC version since '97. It's not the best puzzle game, but it's a lot of fun. The Windows version didn't look quite as nice as the Saturn/arcade versions. The arcade version is definitely ahead of the Game Gear version here in terms of presentation, but the GG version does look like fun. It's not super detailed, but it doesn't look or sound bad for a GG puzzle game. The arcade is the winner, but this looks like a decent port.
The Saturn and arcade ports are excellent. I think the SMS version is the worst with the GG being better IMO but I've never played the PC version. I really like this one and I think it's a very underrated puzzle game. It's no Tetris or Puyo Puyo but it's a nice spin on the genre.
Almost looks like a diff game on the SMS.. I am sure it would have been okay back in the day. Winner: Arcade by a long shot Games like are very much your thing and fun to watch you play! Good stuff man!
Thanks buddy! Oh yeah I love these kinds of games and this one is a nice spin on the genre. The SMS is a huge downgrade which is surprising because the Game Gear port looks a lot better.
It's a really great game overall. I don't love the SMS port since it's so bare bones but it doesn't make it any less fun. It's one of those games that's surprising it even got a SMS port to begin with.
It's a very lackluster visual presentation on the SMS but it's still fun regardless. Having said that, it's the worst port of the game and even gets outshined by the Game Gear port.
