This is my first impressions of the new Arcade1up Joust Midway Legacy cabinet. The monitor isn't as nice as the BOE, but not as bad as I feared. Build quality on the rest of the cabinet is excellent.
Update: After spending a few hours with the monitor, it's just not good. It's a shame, because the cabinet quality is really great and one of the best A1up has done. If this series had a good monitor, it would have been a slam dunk. As it stands, I'm considering a return and will definitely not be purchasing Centipede and Dig Dug, which is a serious bummer. Whoever made the call to cheap out on the monitor for this series really dropped the ball.
That’s a shame, I was also looking forward to the Centipede cab. I even set aside the cash for it and everything. I guess I will be using that money to finish my Polybius-themed PC-ran cabinet.
I have the centipede cabinet, and its fine for playing. Already got the top scores on about 8 of the games in all categories. I'm ordering joust and dig dug. The monitor makes NO difference at all when playing. Most people that aren't very good, or just casual will complain, while the experts just play. I'll be on the leaderboards for almost most of the games. That and the controls are important. Not the screen or aspect ratio. later -1
@@negative1723 I agree that you absolutely don’t notice it while playing. Once you’re focused on the action, the black levels and viewing angles just fade away. It only bothers me when I’m walking around the room and see that monitor next to the others in the room, so I’m going to fix it and keep the cabinet. Actually ordered a second replacement monitor for Centipede and ordered that cabinet as well. Sounds like the future cabinets will have the BOE monitors, but if not, I’ll fix them too. These current cabinets are just too nice to pass up.
@@animatronicsandarcades Check out 19kFox’s video about the monitor he found for his MK cabinet. I’ve ordered 2 of them for Joust and Centipede. Ebay had several used ones for $75 shipped, so it is worth it to me to fix these otherwise amazing cabinets.
@@DannyWelch well put ! I don’t notice while I’m playing but it stands out so much when I’m looking at it next to the other cabs . If I don’t swap , I was thinking of putting Joust (when I eventually get it) next to centipede so I notice less . But I’ll likely make a change at some point soon.
I remember plying this game in the 80's at the pizza spot in Brooklyn. It used to be a line of kids lining up the quarters to play. Brings back memories.
Looks great! Will be a great stand out in your game room. Also you brought up a good point " in the Arcade" a monitor could be messed up or off color. Doesnt look to bad.
Great review! Beautiful cab! Klax looks completely awful! I will be adding this cab soon. One of the best looking cabs out there. Anxious to play paperboy!
I was going to order this but I'm on the fence now because of your monitor comments in the update. They should let us adjust the brightness/contrast/backlight. I'm not sure whether to order this or not because I really like the games list. I have a ms pac man 40th anniversary cabinet and I love it.
If you're ok with the extra ~$75 and a little time to swap out the monitor for a Dell E1715s, it's an awesome cabinet. It's very well built and one of my personal favorites.
It’s a beautiful cab and I love Joust but that monitor looks too washed out. Edit: Nvm just saw your video upgrade to the Dell. That’s a big difference.
Assembly is pretty straightforward. I really enjoyed this cabinet a lot and it was one of the best looking cabinets in my room. The stock monitor isn't great, so I upgraded it to a Dell monitor from ebay. I did a video on that upgrade.
Excellent video! Very real, not overproduced, huge thumbs up! What are you using for the 4" risers you mention? Looks nice and I could use raising all my cabs up by just about that much (I am 6'0" or so, and it's just barely low for my viewing angle).
Thanks! I use some inexpensive furniture risers from Amazon that fit great and are very stable. I have a video on them that has a link in the description.
My son always plays this cab with the volume on 15 so you know what happens everytime I turn it on.... ...and my daughter and I always play Joust with 99 lives.
This cabinet with the BOE monitors is going to be fantastic. They’ve definitely taken a large step up on their cabinet design. Can’t wait to see the new Capcom Legacy cabinet.
If you’re ok with spending another $75, you can get an excellent replacement off ebay. Pick up a Dell E1715s and it’s an easy swap. Looks fantastic now!
The crappy monitor is a huge disappointment. The only way we can send a message to 1Up is to stop spending your money on these cheaply made pieces of crap.
Arcade1up sent out an email on July 16th and I ordered immediately. I’ve been waiting on this cabinet to replace the MK2 legacy, because it was my least favorite. Arrived on Friday when I posted the video. =)
I got the PAC mania cab kinda wish I got the ms PAC 40th anniversary because it has the BOE but honestly it's not bad for gameplay just watching someone play from certain angles is pretty bad in my case only watching from a certain side but the cab looks amazing so for a casual audience in my eyes the monitor is just fine
I heard somewhere that they started using the cheap monitors because they couldn’t produce enough BOE monitors or something like that. But still, they should’ve waited and there are better TN monitors they could have used.
That’s what I heard as well, but… Anyway, it sounds like they are going back to the BOE’s for future cabinets, so that’s very good to hear. This is an incredibly well built cabinet. With a BOE, it will be amazing. I’m not sure if it’s my imagination, but I swear the sticks even feel better on this cabinet. The switches are much quieter than others. Not sure I’ll even swap the sticks, but I’ll swap in Goldleaf buttons, because I love ‘em.
hit 1million on joust. no issues with monitor. doesn't impact gameplay. most people aren't any good and complain about it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uH0SXvKuSO4.html later -1
That TN monitor just destroyed that experience. I shipped mine back, as soon as I turned it on. Cost a lot to send it back, but I think A1up got the message. Very sorry to see yours had the TN monitor too. With my vision, the low contrast of the TN makes it impossible for me to see the game. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the video. This is the best looking cab to date imho. Also a huge fan of Joust. Not loving the monitor. I love that the sound ia great. When you were commenting on it, I was thinking: damn, I wished Ridge Racer sounded like that. Then you say that exact thing later haha. We had to use old computer speakers out of headphone jack and double-side tape them behind the marquee on it. How is the online play? I think that may be the deciding factor for me.
LOL that was my sentiment as well. Fortunately, it looks like it was only for a couple of cabinets and now they are back to the BOE monitors for Capcom Legacy, MvC2, etc. Hopefully this was just a one time thing and we never see them step backwards on the monitors again.
