Since I do not have any interest in upgrading my 'Atari' cabinet for the third time from Arcade1Up I wanted to upgrade the Atari Tempest Legacy Cabinet and wanted to show off the mods/changes made so far. I have zero interest in the new Atari Centipede Legacy Cabinet - the Tempest Artwork and cabinet shape is perfect for me, I'll just be missing out on 2 additional games and online leaderboards.

Since this video has been such a tremendous help for me with modding this cab, I wanted to also suggest another mod that I did if it helps anyone. There are sellers on Etsy that can create a custom bezel for the cab you want so I had one cut and pre-drilled to have a plain black but glossy bezel as I feel the two big logos of the original from A1Up distract from this cabinet when compared to the original arcade. Makes a tremendous difference! I am also trying to find a plain black trackball to swap out with the original. Having a hard time with this one. The one I found was just a tad too big.

Hey Pdubs!! Oh man have I been missing some mod videos, this was great!! The replacement panel looks sooo much better as does the marquee!! I'm a big fan of tasteful mods and ones that look stock when done are by far the best. These all look on point!! Nice job!!

That waterfall panel looks beautiful along with all your mods! Hope to get my hands on a panel someday. As for the trackball, aside from aesthetics... does it roll and respond better than the stock A1Up trackball? I don't care about color or lighting, I want control and responsiveness. I just bought my one (and probably only) A1Up cab and this is the one. I love Tempest, Crystal Castles, Missile Command, and Asteroids. My wife loves Centipede. So with the spinner and trackball and the look of the Tempest cabinet, I bought it. The only other one I'd probably buy is TRON. All others games are easily played in my MAME cab and for pinball I built a VPinball cab.

Honestly the arcade one of track ball isn't bad it works just fine they've improved it over the years changing it to the GRS 1 really is more of an esthetic thing having something light light light up et cetera

Beautiful mods, Pdubs, BUT... only relevant if/when Arcade1Up fixes the failing encoder boards that are "a known issue" (per A1U support) that causes many Tempest owners to experience a complete failure of the controls every 3-4 months. I'm one of those folks currently awaiting my THIRD deck for a Tempest cab I just bought in December! I'd sure hate to add failure-prone controls to such a nice waterfall deck.

I do know that A1U has confirmed they are looking into it (my first one was sent back to their QA team for review). Hopefully we get something from them eventually (a replacement program would be great!). It would also be good to know if the new cabinet has the same encoder board revision or not…

@@PDubsArcadeLoft yup, I'm in the failed encoder group too. Power and trackball would work, but buttons would not. They sent me a replacement, but does make me nervous for the future.

Yikes that acrylic marquee price 😱. $50? Was expecting $20-25. At $50 you’re in the complete replacement light up marquee category. It’s easy to recommend when you’re not paying $50 for it.

Let's just say Szabo's likes his markup... I've only ever ordered one thing from him, and though it was nice, it wasn't worth the price. I think PDubs should have noted the price points in his video.

Quick question! About to order everything on the shopping list to update my Tempest. I noticed you link to the "short" volcano button in your description, but the tall one is the one used in the actual Tempest arcade machine. The ones in your video actually look like tall ones and not the short ones. Which ones are you actually using, and if it's NOT the tall one would there be an issue using the tall one? Thanks Pdubs!

I went with the short one due to the depth of the control panel...I think the tall one the button might not poke out the top of it to press it.

So, you replaced the panel, you replaced the trackball, you replaced the buttons, you replaced the marquee. You would replace the spinner if that were an option and you want to replace the coin door... Why in the world are you shoving money up Arcade1Up's butt for a sub-mediocre product then? In the end they think they are on the right track. This machine should have been converted into a bonfire solely out of principle.

All mods are "optional" and I film either full tutorials or showcase videos for others to inform and entertain. This video was more of a showcase than a step by step guide.

Just finished moving the encoder, controls, and buttons from the stock A1up deck over to the new one. I have volcano buttons as well, but they lack the polarity indicators. Just curious as to which leg takes the hot, or plus, and which would be the neutral, or negative, for the player 1, and 2 start button leads. I think I've got the red, and black leads from the splitter supply connected correctly, according to your close up shots of the volcano buttons. Thanks.

Mods look nice and I love having this cabinet in my collection. However outside of a Retro530 coin door and buttons I’ve already done, I’m really hesitant to upgrade it further due to the higher than normal failure rate with the encoder board. I’ve already been through one and I would hate to sink a ton of money into the marquee and control panel to only have it die again in a few months. Really hoping this control panel survives as I love this cabinet. 🤞

I also had problems with the encoder board on mine. Gotta say, though, that Arcade 1UP really stepped up and took care of me on this. They sent me a new control panel for free, even though it was past warranty.

Trying to make sure I installed the volcano buttons correctly. Are you able to pull them straight out of the hole? It seems they're not able to be secured from beneath the control deck. I can't tell you how many times I watched this video to walk through each mod! Thanks so much for posting!!!

The buttons should have come with 2 different size black pieces the red light goes in, one won't fit the other does

@@PDubsArcadeLoftI got the 3-D printed adapters from Retro530 that slide into the holes since my Waterfall Deck had the holes for regular buttons. Perhaps it’s the adapters that aren’t clipping snug since I can pull them right out from the top. Little bummed about that but should stay in place. Now I just need to find the cones for the top of the buttons to finish it right up!

The cabinet really looks a lot better now, congratulations! But the only thing that really bothers me now is the fact that the trackball lights up. Don't you get a good substitute that's just matte and snow-white?

IMO, for the retail prices Arcade1Up charges for their cabs, they should be releasing cabs that don't need these high-quality upgrades, the cabs should come with them. Why doesn't someone start selling DIY cabs that are similar in form-factor\size, and collectors can then do exactly what is shown in the video and other videos that more-or-less "gut" the Arcade1up cab, replacing nearly everything. Price would be the same or less. I do understand a lot of collectors do not want to hassle with upgrading their cabs, but I suspect a lot of them ultimately do.... like, who in the F*** at Arcade1Up thought it was a great idea to use a cheap 25 cent "Knob" as a spinner? I imagine an Arcade1up executive saying, "The cab design looks great, who cares if it works, all that matters is that it looks great so that we make huge profits."

Little confused,,,,that's not Szabos new 'slip on' marquee. The new ones have no adhesive and literally 'slide on'. His old stick on ones are great also. Cab looks great BTW

I have this Cabinet and I really really want to do this mod. The problem being the control panels for this cab are prone to failing. I am now waiting for Arcade 1up to send me my third control panel. I held off on on doing this mod because of that. Bought the cabinet new back in March. 3 control panels in less than 3 months. Love the mod and want to do this to mine but, I just want to be able to play it.

I was gonna say you can get actual happ buttons with cherry microswitches for like a buck more than those diy retro clones. I have both and the real happ ones are worth the extra money. I get them from TMolding site. I’m doing the same to my cab right now with the waterfall deck. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to salvage the old buttons so I got new ones. Only reason I’m not doing volcano buttons is you have to use one of them for game play and I don’t think it would be comfortable to use like that. Bought mine a couple months ago but I was waiting for my xarcade coin doors to get in so I can do it in one shot

Bro...it came out amazing. On this one..coin door is a better option than the kick plate art. My opinion. Wow, the buttons look amazing. I have the shelf also, I love mine! Trying not to put any money into tempest right now in lieu of other projects at the moment but...yeah that marquee, I have to have it. It looks way better. Good one pdub, your tempest looks freaking amazing.

I would never recommend Knock off buttons or switches. From my hands on Experience aren't much better than A1UP buttons because these Chinese Knock offs have a higher variance in Quality in manufacturing than A1UP's Chinese buttons. The Microswitches... Considering how they are prone to failure.... I don't know. I mean I hear you.... But considering th price of Real buttons and DX44 Microswitches.... I think you have enough room to respect your gameplay enough to use authentic buttons and switches. The experiences I have had with these Knock off buttons have been a range in plastic quality, diameter cut where some buttons rub against itself and create plastic dust and others don't but the spring is more stiff. For th cheap switches I have experienced a dead switch on arrival, and one die by the end of the day. Just though I would share why I stick with Happ/ IL for buttons and Cherry/ZF for Microswitches. I also use them in Sanwa sticks as the Sanwa PCB Is also prone to failure and requires replacement.

Looked like the new marquee sticker went on crooked. Didn't see any view of the bottom of the marquee after it was applied. I was expecting light bleed coming from the bottom, especially bottom right corner. Was that the case?

Dang!! I was expecting a new spinner with this post...I love it PDub!! I didn’t know the deck was a limited run. I guess my FOMO paid off for once. Mod1Up did an amazing job with these. I’ve been holding out installing mine in hopes of adding Glen’s GRS spinner. I guess theirs no better time than now to install my "limited waterfall deck"👈😘 Gamer Flex!!😆 PS... this doesn’t mean I’m giving up on Glen😁

I did this mod upgrade simply amazing!! I spliced into the power coming from the PCB, No "y" splitter from the marquee and it worked to light up my volcano buttons.

Bro with all this work! There is just one thing left to do to make it a wonderful Blend of Old and New. You gotta try the Rollie Leaf Switches for your 80s games!!!! I absolutely swear by them! I won't be sticking with regular Microswitches for 80s games no more! The only downside to them is that they are Period Accurate with a Mush feeling, but because they adapt to modern Microswitch buttons that come with springs; It isn't at all like a Stock A1UP button or a Sanwa. But the benefit of it outside of more period accurate control option is that it's absolutely very responsive! Right now I have a Rollie Switch for my fire button on Gen 1 Galaga and Class of 81 as an experiment. But moving forward I'm sticking with Rollie Switch's on any more 80s cabs that I could get.

@@PDubsArcadeLoft So far Paradise Arcade has been sold out... But maybe you can find them else where... But probably more expensive. They aren't cheap!! I think they are $3+ with a guesstimate 😅 D44X Microswitches for reference are about $1.50+.

I love the aftermarket control panel, not sure why the marquee needs to be replaced, seems like you got a faded one (printed wrong?). I do love that light up trackball however, that is drop dead sexy
