Buy what you can and like. Everyone has different goals and limitations whether they realize it or not. I’m happy for everyone who gets what they want … and I feel like anyone who disparages others over theirs are just self appointed gatekeepers with some level of deep psychological issues that have a need to be superior or “right”. I have played video games since Sears Pong and the classic Mall Aracade Days. I’ve seen and played them all and feel each has an appeal and a value … yes even the tiny My Arcade that GenX Grownup reviews a lot. shout out to all the positive RU-vidrs especially PD7, CornerCade and Quarterdeck to name a few. Also enjoy the SuperGameRoom Gang and B Kong. Different strokes for different folks. These are all toys or games (even the original Arcade Games) that we have a passion for and they serve as a good escape and time to enjoy with friends and family! Thanks for this great video on the topic 👊🏻👊🏻 (Subscribed!)
The original machine is always the best but there is no way that I can 1 - fix them 2 - fit one through my door 3 - put it in the house without it being in the way 4 - spend thousands on a cab (or even know where to buy them) 5 - I’m a college student so this is self explanatory why i have 1ups lol It is a shame though a1up is making the most strange and bad decisions which makes me want to get originals more
As someone who used to own a neo Geo big red my 55 yr old back says NOPE never again am I moving that monstrosity out of a basement again. So one ups for the rest of my resistance. Buying golf next month my 12th can 😅
No debate was intended. I started this channel off of my main channel and my viewers for the longest time who are not in the arcade space were always asking what those cabinets were, what they cost, and if they should buy one. This is a subject that has been out there in the arcade community for quite some time and I certainly had no intention of whipping a dead horse. maybe I should have been more clear that as an introductory video to this channel that it was more to answer those questions for those unfamiliar with the products
Appreciate this commentary. Hope to see more of your content. I have a similar channel, but haven't done my first non-short video yet. I own an original DK that is in process of being restored; a former Contra cab that I put a 60-1 inside (jamma, works and looks great) and most recently I bought a "broken" street fighter 2 arcade 1 up which I converted to retropie and am enjoying it very much.
I would love to own an Arcade cabinet. But I don’t have the room for it. So the size of the Arcade 1UP worked for me. I have an emulator I bought on Amazon connected to my 55 inch TV. My unit has approximately 18K games over 35 different systems. The issue I have with it is many games either don’t load or crash during the game. Also I need better controls for the games. Someday I’d like an actual Arcade Cabinet with multiple games.
Maybe look into building a pedestal arcade machine that connects to your existing TV? A pedestal is much smaller than a regular machine, and can be put away when you're not using it. Some people have even designed them to double as a side table when not in use.
Excellent topic. Not sure how inflation and higher tax rates will affect the market. So far the prices are high but for good reason as there are still many buyers out there. As for replacing a real cabinet for these more modern solutions, there are enough videos out there to educate anyone interested.
I prefer the full-size original arcades. However, there are 3 arcade games I'm having a bad time finding on the Net in original form and they are: Pit-Fighter; Super Street Fighter II Turbo; and Ridge Racer. I may have no choice but to get them in 1Up form.
unkess you have limited space, lower budget, and dont want heavy cabs and are just looking to play. The video shows examples of the cost of actual machines vs obtaining a smaller scale cab at a lower price point if youre just wanting nostalgia without the cost
You must be in Alberta....... I saw that listing on for miss Pac Man in Cochrane. I just got lucky on a space invaders deluxe original cabinet on local marketplace super happy about that. I just went down the rabbit hole haha but I want OG dedicated cabs. The problem is finding someone to work on them. I personally want a Robocop and Bad dudes, ghouls n ghosts or ghosts n goblins just to name a few. I get how arcade 1up are more convenient for space but I have seen to many videos knocking the quality. I would just end up doing mods and upgrading all the parts and not sure it's really worth the hassle. If I could get the MDF cabinet panel pieces cut I could simply just build my own and I may do that down the road.
@TheCornerCade I watch a lot of arcade channels haha. I have a main channel Unacceptable Fringe and I used to cover arcades when I was starting out but I cover Canadian politics for my job and didn’t want to mix the two. This second channel is a good way to be able to talk about the fun stuff too and a mix of some other culture war/ entertainment drama stuff along with the occasional tech and live streams of gaming once I hit the required subs! Glad to see you popping in Danny!
I think the problem is usability. Arcade machines are the size they are because they are designed to be used by adult human beings. Everything is placed at the right height and spacing for an average adult to use comfortably. Make it smaller, and everything gets thrown off. You wouldn't want a game controller that had been scaled down, because they are designed to fit human hands, and scaling it down would break that 'compatibility' with the human hand. The 1UP machines have the same problem. You can get a riser to try to compensate for this to an extent, but it's still not right. It doesn't feel anything like playing a real arcade machine, and at that point, why bother when there are other ways to play these games? When the 1UP machines first came out, I thought it was a great idea. That was until I saw one set up in a store. My daughter was 7 or 8 at the time, and it was about the right size for her. It was on a riser too. I guess they look nice enough, and are a nice conversation piece, but they only really have novelty value in my opinion.
No joke. Look I like arcades as much as the next guy but after selling my retro collection and seeing my kids flock to the machine given to me, I wanted to give them something to keep them sane during lockdowns. In Canada we were locked up essentially for almost 2 years and when a new machine came out, building it with my kids and then enjoying it as a family kept everyone excited about what was next and for my kids to experience an emulated feel of what an actual arcade felt like.
