Arcadia collapses into administration with 13,000 jobs at risk - BBC News

More than 13 thousand jobs are at risk after the retail empire Arcadia went into administration.
The group - which includes Topshop, Burton and Dorothy Perkins - had been seeking a new injection of cash following lost sales because of the coronavirus pandemic.
However a former boss of Topshop - Jane Sheperdson - has told the BBC that the group's problems go back much further than the pandemic.
She has alleged that Sir Philip Green, Arcadia's chairman, had failed to invest in his retail empire and had made its downfall inevitable.
Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by business editor Simon Jack.

If the £1.2 billion which 'Sir' Phillip Green plundered from Arcadia was recovered and distributed between the 13,000 employees, then they would each receive a pre-tax redundancy package of £92,307. However, that would deprive him of a second yacht which would be totally unacceptable, right? Far easier to put them on £380 a month universal credit and make them feel grateful for what they have.

Long standing history of being vile to employees. I said 10 years ago, after hearing first hand stories, that his style was that of a dinosaur. Nobody runs companies that way anymore. Meanwhile he and his horror of a wife are laughing in Monaco because the UK can't touch the money they bled and stole from their staff and country. Interpol should be after these criminals.

My sympathies to the staff but not to the businesses! Yet another case of insufficient investment and too slow to adapt to changing trends! Maybe Sir Philip shouldn’t have siphoned off that £1.2bn dividend to his wife, and maybe he should get out his chequebook before expecting other people to!

Paid no tax - business in the wife's name. How many times can you sell in your own shops and concessions near-by? All high street businesses sold their freeholds to investment companies, rentals kept going up and up, trade went down because of online companies with fewer overheads - recipe for disaster. High street rents, followed by rates need to find their new levels of sustainability. Ridiculous rents were charged before the downturn of the high street All unsustainable. The selling of freeholds has meant that companies have no assets to raise money from. Hotels have gone through the same problem. Investment companies have seen continual increases in rents. They need to take notice of their small in ads. Investments may decrease due to tradingconditions. This is a knock-on problem.
