As a kid back in the 80s, I was always fascinated that the fighter was based on the F-14. Then again, as the F-14 was pretty much the "star" fighter at the time featuring in several films and TV series.

Only wish they made them out of cast metal - like the 80's transformers. I got sick of pieces falling off so I just super glue ALL pieces into Gerwalk , jet, and bot.

I'm curious why the opted to allow rotating the pilot in the cockpit. If I remember the show right, yes it rotated but didn't the pilot also move into the head for Battleoid / Battroid mode?
I don't think the pilot moves anywhere. Like the VF-1, I'm pretty sure the pilot stays in the chest. I think this confusion is caused by the ability for the head to move out of the way and the pilot to escape out the neck.
H'lo. Thanks for all your Macross and the like. I need a little clarification. I just purchased a pre owned from Japan Yamato 1st release VF 0S. Compared to the Arcadia, I noticed a feature that the Arcadia had that my Yamato didn't. Is it correct that only Arcadia version has those panels that covers the gap in its upper chest? Thanks.
I remember the different modes as Fighter, Guardian, and Battloid modes. Is the difference because of Macross and Robotech? (I know they are basically the same universes but they are a bit different one was the one in Japan and the other was for the US.)
Yep, you nailed it. For toys that are released as Macross products I try to use the Macross terms, for anything released specifically as a Robotech product, I try to use the Robotech terms.
I still dont get how to get the arm to pull back and swing out from fighter mode to gerwalk mode. Im afraid that i might break it or something. Can anyone help?
+movefwdg Sorry for the delayed response, that stand was bought eons ago but I believe they're now available at flightpose.com. Be warned though, I heard they use clear rubber tips now that might adhere to painted surfaces.
ScorchedEarthToys Damn this is a nice toy but all I ever see are VF-1S', VF-1J's, and VF-2SS' for the most part. OCCASIONALLY I'll see a DX Chogokin YF models but those disappear so quick I noticed. Which are the most sought after the frontier series or the DYRL/anime' series?
I would guess that, in general, there is more demand for DYRL/SDF Macross merchandise than any of its sequels. I'm basing this on the theory that supply reacts to demand and there have been far more VF-1 toys, even in the era since Frontier launched, than any other Macross merchandise. Of course, within either group of merchandise there are toys that sell well and others that don't... usually due to how "heroic" the pilots are in the series.
It would make sense they make more SDF/DYRL toys since that's what most people are familiar with internationally through Robotech. The other shows just haven't been seen much out of Japan outside of anime importers (which must amount to hundreds of fans at best for most of the sequel series; Japanese video is horrendously expensive) because of the blocks on licensing and issues with licensing after Macross Plus. Macross II and Macross Plus were licensed for the West and actually released on DVD, too. The continuing legal challenges/court fights between Tatsunoko, Big West, and Harmony Gold are what keep the other shows away from view besides arguments some of the later series (Macross 7, Macross Delta) probably wouldn't do well in the West. [The SDF Macross point might be moot after 2021 when HG supposedly loses the rights to ALL the animation footage that makes up Robotech. Don't get too excited, folks -- Tatsunoko STILL controls the international rights to the first Macross series and that's where the problem really is. Robotech may end up completely a Tatsunoko project where the anime is concerned but the Macross licensing business still has to be resolved between Japanese companies that made deals decades ago. They straightened out the rights issues recently with Ultra Man in US court of all places, something similar may happen with Macross.] I saw enough of Delta and 7 to say I didn't care for those shows, period. They're really made for children. Delta was a ridiculous idol series that had less to do with science fiction than any other Macross series before it and I really don't need to see an anime version of "American Idol" at any rate. Macross Zero and Macross Frontier have some interesting developments but the original Macross is still the best of the bunch. DYRL has cleaned up designs (better-drawn, no outsourcing to the Tatsunoko satellite studio that drew the worst-looking episodes of the original TV series) and generally nicer animation than the original TV series but it's also something of a primer in why a 2-hour condensation of 27 episodes of TV plotlines generally doesn't work in a feature film.
+Jason Lam I'm a little tired of the VF-0 toys... I'll do a battroid back to fighter video though if/when the cannon fodder variant gets released... assuming the leg falling off issue doesn't come back.
+RayShadow278 I'm afraid there's no good answer there. Bandai recently made a 1/72 VF-1 transformable model but I'm not a modeler so I have no experience with it and from what I've seen, the response was pretty negative. The best toy in that range is the Hi-Metal R VF-1 anymoon.com/blog/?p=8199 though it is very small and lacks some deluxe features and, mostly sold out so you'd have to pay an after market premium which probably puts it above $100. The other 'budget' toys are pretty poor. I guess the Toynami 1/100 ($19.99-29.99) is better than the transformable Kaiyodos, Yamato V1, or Robotech MPC toys (particularly since the Yamato V1 and MPC toys go for closer to $100 in like new condition)..
I'm more an expert at toys than the background story, but my understanding is that the VF-1 was in the later stages of development with the kinks being ironed out on the thermonuclear engines when the VF-0 was rushed out as a test bed for the tech... so the VF-0 came before the VF-1 but just barely.
ambushrein 67 All depends on who your favorite character is, and your budget for collecting Macross toys, as they are quite expensive. 1/60 scale figures from Arcadia or Bandai DX Chogokin are considered top of the line modern Macross toys. A bit less pricey are the new "Hi-Metal R" toys from Bandai which are around 1/100 scale.
Robotech was adapted from three separate Japanese shows, Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada. Macross was very popular in Japan and had several sequels and a prequel. This vehicle was seen in the prequel, Macross Zero. So "NO", it's not from Robotech but it is from a prequel on one of the shows that was stitched into Robotech.

Yes, that's the one, the manufacturer is Arcadia. There's also a "Premium Finish" version that will be released late next month. Same toy but with more painted apps and a lot more expensive sold exclusively through the Arcadia website. The preorder window for that is closed so you'd have to wait until it's released and try to snag one. Retail price is over 41,904 Yen (after tax)
The regular release sold out shortly after release a couple years back. If you're looking for the premium finish version, Google can list several retailers that will help you out but prepare for sticker shock.
but where do you get them from? also how come a majority of reviewers never do the decent thing and [when comparing size] never use something everyone has seen like a soda can? or even a ruler? [the only one i have seen do this is jobby the hong]
This is a transformation guide so I just transform the toys. Isn't there enough varitechs in the market already? why don't they make more destroids to go w/ these Valkeries? especially the Destroid monster. I'm not tired of your videos but I am tired of these Valkeries, how many valkeries can anyone buy/want?
+Jack Daniel There is a destroid monster coming out later this year! The good news is that I'm done with VF-0 toys for probably a year. Upcoming stuff will include a Regult, a VF-2SS, and the Hi Metal R VF-1 toys. After that I might pull out something not Macross to mix things up (Votoms, Mospeada, or maybe even Patlabor)
I think the reviewer is not really familiar with the units that he is reviewing. Because parts must not pop out if you are doing the standard procedure.... but thats just my observation. I might be wrong. It is up to the viewer to conclude....
