Arcane begins in the city of Piltover during a time of unrest. The topsiders who live on the ground above, and under the sunshine have a firm control on the folk who live beneath. Vi and Powder are two young girls who have survived a conflict between the two groups and now try to make their way in the crime ridden underworld. They are joined with Mylo and Claggor in a theft to steal valuables from a laboratory only to have a mysterious item explode and send the full force and weight of the Enforcers after them.
All four are under the car of Vander. A man with a violent and unknown past who has taken them all under his wing. The gang returns from the theft, successful, but are ambushed by another gang and barely manage to fight them off, only for Powder to lose the loot in the scuffle. Vander attempts to stave off the Enforcers from fully moving into the underworld to little success. The episode ends with the audience seeing a dark and shadowy man with a purple substance declaring that his plot is afoot!
Arcane begins the season with a fantastic first episode. There is action and character and style from the very beginning. The writers have done a fantastic job of making a seamless blend of action inside the push and pull of tension while also showing off and defining the characters. In this video I go over how the story is able to accomplish this and completes the most important job of making us curious enough to see the second episode.
