@@roxrequiem2935 Well, it's an island that gnomes used to breed Half-Ogres for use as bodygurds/muscle. It involved a lot... No, a LOT of male ogre to human female rape. So yeah, fuck gnomes.
It's funny that you're surprised about how long the manual is, because a large amount of manuals back then were like that. Especially for RPGs. The Baldur's Gate manuals were massive. Even MGS4 had a really good manual with lots of unique stuff, although not as long as that.
Honestly I miss the days where you got these kinds of manuals with games. It was basically just an excuse for game writers to go crazy with lore in a way they weren't permitted to with the actual game. I still have my OG Starcraft game manual. Its written better than the game is.
@@matrix3509 Homeworld is well-known for that as well, great lore. It's impressive that the games were just as well-written. Except 2, but 1 and Cataclysm were just as well written as the lore within their manuals.
16:39 that was ridiculously common back then tons of games came with in-universe manuals, or manuals that had entire long bits dedicated to in universe writing.
2:15 Listen, i play Charismatic characters. When the eternal dragon of doom wants to destroy the world. It is my duty to sacrifice my dignity and body to postpone the end. There are many ways to be a Hero.
Regarding that Benatar quote. There is a pretty large discussion in ethics whether denying someone's chance for existance is unethical or not, depending on various axioms. Naturally, the quote only applies to *not having children*, not to murdering your existing ones. Although that distinction is something that often comes into question in the aforementioned discussions.
I think I still have a physical copy of this (Yes including a physical manual, it is a couple of centimetres thick) I spent so many jour in this game, the world is fantastic. Now I want to by a port of it.
ah yes Ac: Syndicate the game where you free the children...for like 10 minutes until they are put to work in another factory. Not exactly a long term solution there.
8:26 It's very interesting that you brought up David Benetar here. He is indeed pretty based. I've been listening to interviews he's done as I've looked more into pessimistic philosophy.
I've read both The Human Predicament and Better Never To Have Been, it's incredibly interesting. A rarely seen perspective for sure, but one I can identify with
Scooby Doo: Night of 100 Frights for the PS2 had one of the best and most enjoyable manuals for any game I ever read as a kid, so much so I would read it casually, like you would a real book. Unfortunately I lost it one day and was never able to find it again.
Nah, people stopped going after Sseth and instead went after his discord mods. One in particular had to face weird calls to his girlfriend and her family, and having CP faxed to his employer. That's why Sseth puts an expiration date on all discord servers he makes.
His videos are full of dark humor and second degree. The problem is, even if most reasonable people either watch his content and have a good laugh, or don't like it and choose to not watch it and ignore it, there is this part of humanity that thinks that everything they don't like or disagree with, should not exist. Funnily enough, this kind of people, which, at least in France, claim to do it to stop fascism, have a fascist behaviour by definition.
In regards to the gnome hate, it is more than justified if you have played through and understand the context of where half ogres come from. The phrase "The queen birthed 3 before she died." should tell you everything you need to know.
So, one thing about the edgy final boss philosophy: Arcanum is a harsh world, and yet it is one where an afterlife is not only confirmed, but genuinely pleasant to be in. To the point that spirits are pained to be contacted, and people are usually unwilling to come back to life.
The manual is just an example of what game manuals used to be like. You'd get litteral bound booklets that were 50 to a hundred pages long and like 75 percent of it would be background lore. The original tribes manual had an entire history of human development for over 200 years.
"Now I'm not going to say that my people practice human sacrifice. Okay, I'm not going to say that," Chillzone looked me directly in the eyes at this point, and his hand rested upon my collar, "But we do. We absoluitely do and I did not say that, and Sseth did not say that, but we 100% do."
The thing about the antagonists philosophy as well is that he's kind of right. The afterlife does exist in Arcanum's setting, and is pretty great. One of your companions who can die and be brought back to life even says the antagonist has a point in that, just disagrees with the idea of forcing everyone to go along with it and that life isn't all bad.
i suggest the brothers karamazov or i have no mouth and must scream for such a topic as live is suffering . at the end they are just a take to a broader answer but i think it helps with having more perspective so long your not already dead depressed of course .
Good old arcanum, where you can make a character so dumb he cant even get the NAME of the very first follower you get right.. yeah they went through a great deal with dialogue in this game. A whole set of dialogue around one spell? there is ALSO different dialogue if not smart enough or depending on your race and/or tech/magic alignment. Too bad combat itseld is, well.. bad. I never once before faced a game where I feared more my own character shooting himself in the foot with a handgun (despite being built to be a gun user) more than I feared the actual enemy.
For those of you who are curious about the Gnome hate, go watch Mandore Gamings review on Arcanum he goes more indept on the story. Trust me after finding out what the Gnomes did you'll completely agree with Sseth😢.
I treid to play ARCANUM after this but it was to dated for me and while i like the fallout 1 and 2 map exploration type stuff a combat in this game was hard to stomach.
Lol, putting aside any sort of discussion about sexuality; you do realise people used to think that "swordfighting" with your best bro was right up there on the depravity scale, right? 😂 Honestly I don't get why people don't realise the reality of our situation. That at some point, future generations will likely look back at us in quite the same way as we do when we look at history. 🤡 Regardless of the subject, I wish humanity were a little less arbitrary...
