Impressive that a heavy duty door can be built only with dowels. Great work

Very nice. I’m an experienced woodworker (45 plus years; mainly serious hobby but sometime small business). My, how methods have changed in those times. Use the most efficient methods that there are - particularly adhesives. What Chippendale would have done for PU or PVA glues! I’m just starting on building 4 doors and frames all in the Tudor arch stile. There are all going to be internal and totally out of timber. For stability, I shall be using a lot of MRMDF. All the curves are complex and so I can’t use the router compass method. I’ve taken a photo of a style and had it approved. Then I used BigPrint to blow the pdf up to actual sizes (3 different sizes of doors and frames). Now I’m just starting to take a trace from the big print; then make a master MDF template and then make the real things. Im able to use the existing internal doors as the core of the new doors - with both sides covered and mouldings applied. It’s all straight forward if you take each step by itself and maintain absolute accuracy. Success for me is accuracy and consistency - that comes from experience and patience.

Hi. Thanks for your comment. Yes i agree if you have a good plan and take it step by step usually it works out good. Good luck with your build Regards.

Beautiful! The process is very useful, for some reason I assumed you could just build the frame and then add the side light later... apparently not. That means more work for me but it makes sense that it would be stronger this way.

Beautiful arched door. I love the original design. What is that jointer/planer combo? I'm in the market for one. I'm subscribing because I love this door, but I agree a voiceover would be nice with some tips on making it.

Hi. Thanks for your support. Im using a Electra Bechum HC260 planer/jointer. This particular one is quite old. Built in 1985. As far as i know Metabo took them over. So matabo makes similar newer models. This one of myne can plane up to 260mm. A little limited but it really works great for what im doing. My latest video on folding panel doors i have done a voice over. Still new at making videos but i will keep on improving. Regards

@dankieplankie9840

Hi. i do take orders but depending on where you are, shipping costs on a door like this would be extremely high and climate changes could possibly cause warping as i am in a dry climate area.

How much would the frame alone cost to have built by someone such as yourself? I have been looking high and low and not even finding much online about it. I have an 1800's arched oak French door I'd like to install in a chapel. Finding someone to do the frame has been futile. Central Texas in case anyone is out there. I was contemplating learning to do this myself…but alas. I am a realistic to a point. I hate to add blasphemy here, but is there anything pre cut manufactured out there that might work in a pinch? At the end of the day, we need to get this done. Thank you for such an inspirational thing to watch…

Hi. Thanks for your comment. I am all the way From Namibia. To build a frame and ship it halfway across the globe and somthing is a bit off that would be a real Bummer and the cost alone for shipping something all that way would not be justifyable in my opinion. I do hope you can find someone to build you a frame. This was my first time attempting something this complex. It was a learn as you go effort.But I do think it came out pretty nice in my honest opinion. i Also could not find much info or guidence to build arch frames and doors. Good luck finding someone to build it. Otherwise take up the challenge and build it. Its mostly lots of pondering how to achive the objective. And then lots of hours making it happen. cheers

if you dont cover then blade up on that jointer one day tour hand is going to slip and your going to lose most of your hand, and also i carnt believe you let go of that crosscut saw mid cut the pass your hand right infront of it your crazy. besides that you did a amazing job it looked awesome at the end, can i as how you allowed for the timber movement with all those rails in between the stile on the door i imagine they grow a tone if / when they take on any moisture which they eventually will
@dankieplankie9840
@dankieplankie9840 3 года назад
Thanks for your concern. I did not buy the planer new so i did not get al the part for it, including the cover for the blade, but i do try to be as careful as possible working on the machines. I did leave some space for expansion between the panels, Hopefully it will be enough for expanding and contractions. The doors are inside a building, so it is not exposed to extreme conditions. Regards

A couple of things One, a bit of machine wax on your planner/thicknesser would help the job no end Secondly, I’m very surprised you glued all those panels together as normally you would fit bottom, bottom and mid rails and let the rest free. Are you not concerned about seasonal expansion and contraction?

Hi Stanley. Thanks for your comment. This was my first nice door build and it was quite a learning "curve" for me. Where i live we do not have extreme cold winters and the doors are well protected inside. I did leave the 3 panels separated. I also did consult with some other people that should know alot more than me, and they seemed fine withe the way I did it. Will probably do a few things different next time. So I do hope they will last for a long time. Im still new to professional Woodworking and learning withe every project.

Beautifull door and great skill but i believe this door is not going to last long. It doesn't seem that you considered wood movement and it will be prone to cracking twisting and all of that stuff. I hope i am wrong.

Here in the UK there is no way the frame would be dowelled, it would be mortice and tennoned.... Likewise the door, at least the top and bottom rail, and probably the lock rail also.
@MatSmithLondon
@MatSmithLondon Год назад
Probably correct, but is there any reason why not to use dowels now?
