Scripture often refers to the Archangel Michael as a “chief prince” of the heavenly. Michael will play a significant part in end-time events. Michael is not merely one of the angels but the head of a battalion of angels, though not their ultimate leader; that would be God.
Archangels are mentioned throughout sacred Scripture in their unique role as God’s messengers to people at critical times in the salvation process (Jude 9; 1 Thess. 4:16; Dan. 10:13, 21; 12:1). The archangel Michael is introduced as the leader of the faithful angels in their struggle against the rebel angels.
The Holy Arhangel Michael is one of the most celebrated of the Angels and bodiless powers; he is called the Archistrategos, or chief commander, of all the bodiless powers. According to Holy Scripture and Tradition , he has interceded for humanity multiple times and continues to serve as the Defender of the Faith. St Michael is most often invoked for protection from invasion by enemies and from civil war, and for the defeat of adversaries on the field of battle. He is celebrated primarily on November 8, the Synaxis of Michael and all the Bodiless Powers of Heaven; September 6 also marks the miracle of the Archangel at Colossae.
St. Michael, whose Hebrew name translates into English as “Who is like God?”, is the champion of the faithful in their strife with the powers of evil. All throughout history, he is the special protector of those who love Jesus Christ. He has guarded the chosen people of Israel, and will defend God’s holy Church against the battle of the Antichrist.
