Anglo Indians kaise dress up karte kaise hai? Mu kholke bakwas Karne SE pahle, sochna to hai nahi, bakwas Kare Jana hai! One can criticise the acting, but the mounting of a fictionalised comic book, can be anything... What nonsense does he speak? The table looks like American diner, go to Calcutta, you'll find similar seating style in multiple places! Anyways,a crass guy who spews garbage in hair raising volume 😅
Tom Alter was Anglo-Indian by ethnicity..but he was always a proud, flawless Hindi and Urdu speaking Indian..it's sad that the makers didn't even take the sentiments of the Anglo-Indian community into account, just so they could perpetuate their stereotypes 😢
exactly....the very nenowned that comes into my mind when we speak of Anglo Indian is Tom Alter....what a beautiful blend of his family into Indian culture...and his son is carrying his legacy forward...he may not be f=very famous but he is a good storyteller....
I am an Anglo Indian and mere Ghar main sab Hindi bolte hai. Hum Indian hai bhai 😊. And I was sure this movie would suck Archies the comics is not something we should adapt.
I agree with you as all my Anglo Indian friends know Hindi and other Indian languages .They dress up as traditional Indians in day to day life . They have parties and marriages where they wear westerns or Indian wear as per their choice.😂
I know some Anglo Indians who are into arranged marriages, practice Hindu rituals while also attending Church and their language, dress everything is Indian..
Adaptations are good when made with integrity as Sanjay Leela Bhansali did with Romeo and Juliet and gave us Ram Leela , it was a pure Indian adaptation! Also if you talk about new to the industry and being under the pressure of having a legendary father in acting , don’t forget how Babil Khan made his debut in qala and blew our minds ! So yeah this could have been the easiest role offered to them yet they failed lol😅
Babil actually has great acting chops tho so thats why he could pull off something like Qala, whereas most of the actors/starkids in Archies have questionable acting skills, they are suitable for something like Archies only lmao💀😂😂
I think Zoya Akhtar was very angry with whole bollywood institution being attacked on the issue of talentless nepotism. So she just out of spite decided to make this movie. She wasnt being serious.
I agree to everything Shan mentioned I studied in an Anglo Indian School the only one at my time in Delhi and the representation is so screwed most of my Anglo Indian teachers spoke Hindi and had always lived in India wore sarees and ethnic wear and also Anglo Indian Students had no difference in the way they were brought up kuddos to you Shan for pointing that out 😊
I beg to differ. Even back in the 80s anglo indians behaved & dressed more like Brits. I had teachers and also class mates who were anglo indian. And since this is based in the early 60's the influence would have been more as even the elite Indians at that time spoke and behaved more like the Brits as most of them had been to schools & colleges in London.
When I think of 1960s India. I think of actresses like Sharmila tagore and Waheeda Rehman and actors like Dev Anand and Sunil Dutt . Trust me , they also potrayed elite characters but there characters weren't so anglicized like this. More of a mixture of classical western and Indian look of that era.
I've been reading Archie's for almost 25 years now, and I can vote that Dilton Doiley is definitely not a Gay character. He's presented as an extra-studious, class-topper guy who spends most of his time inside his science lab instead of dating girls. But I've read in many comics that he went to dates and even asked for dating tips from Betty and Veronica when he liked any girl. The Cheryl Blossom series showed him attracted to Cheryl. I knew this movie would be sheer 'Gobar', but Zoya Akhtar should actually apologize to Archie's fans like us for ruining our teenage fantasies!! 😠
It's also the fault of people who call themselves fans of archies and still couldn't understand from the trailer what an absolute abomination this movie would be.
There is an unnecessary inclusion of lgbtq plots/characters in everything that involves Zoya Akhtar (atleast since the last 3 years). I don't know the agenda behind this but it is forcefully shoved into our faces.
Even when he has responsibility as a reviewer and to provide content, hats off to him.. I wouldn't even watch shorts of this movie but we all know this going to hit youtube shorts as meme... 😂
And actor like Tripti Dimri had to do 10-15mins outfit revealing cameo to become new national cursh of the nation . Despite proving her talent right from 2018… 😢 . This is sad reality
@@thunderclap2842 Leo, a Tamil movie was also a remake of an American movie called "A History of Violence". Although it's not the same as the original, the basic storyline is the same. But the movie was made in an Indian context, the people were Indian, the story felt Indian and was actually a proper adaptation. What they did with The Archies is just dumb and lazy. As Shan said, if this movie didn't have the mega star kids this movie wouldn't even have been made and no OTT platform would have bought it and nobody would have promoted it to the scale as this movie was.
Anyone with a working knowledge of post-independent India would know that in 1964 (which is the year the movie is set in), India was going through a tough phase. Political instability was rife after the passing of Jawaharlal Nehru, the morale of the nation was low after the defeat in the Sino-Indian War, and the threat of an armed conflict with Pakistan was looming large. To top it all, India was badly hit by inflation, and food shortage-insofar that we were heavily dependent on American food aid, and there was immense pressure from international agencies to devalue the rupee. Of course, none of this is reflected in the movie. How can Riverdale be immune to all this, especially when most of the characters were small business owners?
I was an AVID reader of Archies & DILTON DOILEY WAS STRAIGHT!! With a female love interest and was most intelligent scientist inventing teenager. I was shocked watching this 😂
Irony is when Zoya and reema asked about casting Nepo kids then she replied what about other 4 kids we also have casted them but she forgot to mentioned that they are just side characters , she never casted on the basis of acting talent because they are 1000 times better than Suhana , agastya and Khushi. Bollywood never going to stop doing this they always have complex and fear of talented actors . Same when Aalia posted about Animal she mentioned like almost nothing about Tripti Dhimri who is actually better than her and deserve best actor for Qala for this year for OTT but they even bought it and gave it to Aalia for Darlings pathetic
@@zuhasajid900 🤣🤣 are bhai when the movie announced from that time most of people knows she is Animal , 5 months ago when first poster released she posted it and was also mentioned in actors list , even she was in trailer so she wasn't a surprise , and aalia bhatt mentioned about all actors after its released when all people were talking about Ranbir and Tripti ,so its all crap that Alia wanted to hide because she is a surprise .
It almost feels like the powerful Bollywood families are conspiring to not let talented outsiders enter in this industries, so that the audience will have to rely on them for entertainment. They don't want the outsiders to get any limelight or popularity, because that will ruin their popularity and influence over the media and industry.
@@ShanPrasherexactly! It felt that movie made extra efforts in being pretentious. Reminded me of your Director skits telling the cast,... "Aye seedhe hindi kyun bol raha hai, thoda tongue twist kar accent daal"😂😂😂.
@@komalyadav2123 mdm India m 22 saal aurat ma ban jati h 😂 plz 23 saal ki aurat ko kid bola band kro vese hamre srk uncle aaj bhi 30 year old character role play karte h bhale unki age 58 h 😊
@@ShanPrasherhonestly, Ruskin bond has written in his short stories that his Hindi came with an accent. These are stories written 40-50 years back. So around the same timeline as this movie. So this entire narrative that Anglo Indians speak good Hindi may be true for today… but early in the 60s, very few could speak proper Hindi
Agastya has potential if he works on his hindi diction. Suhana and Khushi are giving Ananya Pandey major competition. All the plastic surgical procedures could not make Khooshi any better looking. Suhana is SRK with extra padded pushup bras and no acting skills.2 Non nepo boys has potential but they will not get the chances they deserve. So overall its all about sets and costumes.
@@pranjaldesai4968 Girls are judged everywhere in world based on their clothes. Even in the most developed western countries, girls are judged based on their clothes. So it is not an issue
@@raja-jl9os who told you? in so many countries girls are not judged for clothes okay. Don't normalise it. even in India, most of them don't judge, only people like you who are judgemental judge other people.
Again we are missing the important issue here. The issue isn't of rich vs Non- rich or elite vs Non- elites. If that would have been the case then the only difference would have been of luxury but the actual only issue is of cultural relativity.. Elites of all colonised societies aren't rooted in their own culture, for example while French, German elites would still be French, German, Indian elites are heavily westernised coconuts.. A poor German, middle class German and rich German can relate to each other. That's why Spanish people can relate with 'ELITE' because of cultural relativity not luxury lifestyle whereas in India the issue is not of luxury lifestyle but cultural relativity as we sae during films like 'CLASS' or 'ARCHIES'. All colonised societies, their elites are deracinated coconuts who aren't rooted in worldview of own civilization. Our elite speak in English, only worldview is of Anglosphere, hate their own culture because as Macaulay said 'Indian in blood only'
@@summiitt I don't think so that it's upto us coz premiere is not for common people. Look at the amount of actors showing up for this film. I think we do support newcomers otherwise those from outside the industry wouldn't have made it big.
Trust me. You will be the only guy left who is speaking the truth abt this film. They have purchased every single blue tick account on twitter and even Film companion type channels are uploading fake reviews😂😂. I did not believe in corporate booking allegation against SRK earlier at all, but seeing how they are changing audience's perception of this film makes me doubt him now
Anglo- Indians in actual life are more assimilated and integrated into Indian culture.. Whereas in Zoya's film, these are cut off people from mainstream. People who are westernised need not necessarily be Anglo- Indians.
And the anglos who have married Indians are regretting it everyday and now we go back to marrying our own caste. Anglo Indian have been brought up to be free and develop our own character but after inter caste marriages they have finally understood that it’s a mistake. Every Anglo Indian has moved out of India and now only 10% are stuck in India.
Just go ahead and watch it without thinking about these reviews which are done by people who have already decided that they are going to hate the movie and almost everyone with a slightly privileged family. Reviews are really spoiling our movie experience nowadays.
Americans will lose respect when they see Archies in India, NOT include them in their club. Fools. Dont we have our own homegrown comics , stories and narratives. Ye second America banne ke chakkar me na ghar ke hain na ghaat ke.
As an "English AND Hindi speaking" Mumbaikar from the suburbs, 90s kid, who has from his childhood only read Archies, Tintin and Asterix comics. who's every travel in train started with my mom buying me an Archies doube digest. And still has a stacks of those comic books, I was excited. But even the trailer made me cringe. and this review was the last nail - gonna skip it.
Thanks Shan..as always bang on point. Its stunning that they are living in a "creative" universe..as in the makers Zoya ..who btw is always copying the west...because as we all know the KJos and Zoyas of the world live in a fantasy western world as if their audience is all NRIs that left India 40 years ago. Adaptation is not an issue and or the complete random fantasy..but they seem to be suspended in any reality ....just like how Karan Johar showed Raichand House (in Scotland) as a palace 4 mins away from Chandni Chowk... or SOTU where this university existed nowhere on the planet. Its so crazy that they could have made this more "homely" ..instead they keep copying American attributes as if all kids in India are just like that...instead of showing authentic India where sure it could be similar but lets make it more in tuned with the country vs copying another country.. etc etc which is so random.... like what school is this? where is this school even exist... there is NOT even a school like this in United States ...nobody acts like this or talks like this. Its funny they want to show "modern" kids in India..but even modern kids dont act like this ...its a whole parallel universe they are showing that exists nowhere and im sure some ppl are like this ..I know South Bombay, South Delhi, South Calcutta ...they all the same but kids are not like this ...some are but MOST are NOT. I have many friends from India who are Anglo Saxan and or Anglo Indian like you mentioned...and we all talk in Hindi fluently and so do they... having accent is not a problem ...but creating something this crap is just so weird... like they want to be white ... you can be "modern" and speak english and have accent and still speak hindi and you could still show a normal school and what not .. its like they (Zoya, KJO) live vicariously in UK and or US and are so influenced by it that they dont know how to make something at home ..unless they make again a random out of the world fantasy of raichand house and or SOTU...these "creators" life in a complete parallel universe. I havent seen a worse set of young actors as this bunch..sure they are young and maybe some of them will get better with time..but omg what a random casting and what complete nonsense of an adaptation which is not Indian at all with any of its arc. But this is what OTT has become..before there was hope for new things..now these big media houses have infiltrated OTT platforms basically to show the same crap we see in bollywood with the same nepo kids and its not going to end. Netflix, Amz prime etc etc sold their soul to these big media houses and so called directors and now we are back to square one with the same bad content we see in bollywood movies and Indian cinema overall. Sad.
@Subtr0nic I agree with your entire comment but I don't agree with that thing which you said that entire Indian cinema I don't think so that overall Indian cinema comes into the Bollywood category because if Bollywood produce shitt content it doesn't include the entire Indian cinema because there are also lot of other regional industries in India which has the potential and are producing good content and they are not Bollywood because Bollywood is just the mainstream industry of India but not the entire Indian cinema and also I feel like other Indian industries don't have identity crisis like Bollywood have that they again and again forget that where they belong to and always fantasize something else only ...
They should not call this an adaption, better call this a remake. Almost everything is as Americanized as the original comic itself, just the retro aesthetic has been changed to more cottagecore. They've mixed the OG American names and "Archies" iconic stuff like Pop's diner so they're true to the comics, so why bring in the "Anglo-Indian" angle?? Just make a remake. Either that or a completely Indianized version. That way you won't trigger the comic's fandom nor the Anglo Indian depiction nor the actor's privileged backgrounds or anything that should be a problem.
The only film family till to produce consistent talent are kapoors ( prithviraj kapoor's family each one of them were able to establish themselves as the best of their contemporaries they are one clan which has acting in their blood
Zoya and Farhan Akhtar have always been sourcing plot points, character backstories, dialogue and body language from hollywood films. It looked cool in Dil Chahta Hai but the. novelty wore off quickly. Be it the Don films or ZMNDB or the boat movie, I get a Déjà vu of having already watched all this on HBO and Star Movies.
yo.. everything said... i have to disagree with you on one key aspect - archies was never about solving mysteries - they might have spin offs where they did solve mysteries. but the comics are just good old fashioned American teenager wholesomeness... so its ok for the movie not have a core story. so i think thats a bit harsh
Log bollywood ko itna seriously kyu le rhe h sabko pata h bollywood is just mediocre industry 😒 mujhe gussa tab ata h jab cheesy industry ko seriously liya jata h bollywood is just time pass industry
First one here.... Would love to say I'm a huge fan of yours. I've been religiously watching your content since the pandemic. Thank you thank you thank you so much for your honest reviews ❤️🙏❤️
I sometimes feel, how India has Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telegu film industry, there should be a parallel English film industry, Kam se Kam aise do naau main paer rakhkhey chalne wale movies nahi banengey
Remember Haider the adaptation of Hamlet. It was very well made and made justice with Indian culture but this Archies is so cringe even my Anglo Indian friends made fun of the trailer back then leave alone watching the film.
Truely agree with elitism element always existing in most Zoya Akhtar movies whether it was Zindagi Na milegi dobara or dil dhadakne do. They were always cruising Europe or in yachts and even they had a personal plane! Maybe the exception was Gully Boy.
Best archies adaptation of bollywood was jo jeeta wohi sikandar. Even tappu sena is better adaptation of arhies then this nepo babies multiverse of madness.
It is an irony of our times that sad portfolio reels like these make it to the front of our viewing platforms and promoted to high heavens yet good, at least more honestly written and made films like Jaanejaan, Kathal, Ghoomer, Pippa (and many more, these were just my favs from the year) don't get even a decent exposure.
Hahahhahahhahahahha I was waiting for this and it came out even before I had expected. Ab toh movie dekhna hi padega just to celebrate apna Shantanu 😂😂😂😂😂😂.
To play the devil's advocate, I think this movie will appeal a lot more to Western audiences. International Netflix accounts are promoting it as well and the response has been mostly positive there.
Yesssssss finally. Both Farhan and Zoya do make the elite u cannot sit with us vibe movies. But Farhan always acts in underdog man of the earth type romrs😜
Thats why I call you my Bhai.. I absolutely felt the same way about the movie.. Never seen a movie try so hard to be cool and end up looking wannabe. and Suhana was sooooo cringely cliched
Adaption is totally fine but at least they should have adopt in an Indian culture without changing the source material and plot , for example Agastya Nanda's character is Adarsh which is based on Archies character just like Pavitr Prahabakar is based on Peter Parker and other actors as Indian characters based on the og characters in a totally Indian environment. Also the actors have tried very hard to look white and westerner to appease them and that's the main reason many people didn't liked or are not interested in the movie.
Hamme sirf Raj aur Diamond comics padhi hai. Agar ye Pinky ya Billu par bhi bana dete to kuchh relate kar paate. Archies ko maine sirf newspaper ke corner me dekha hai.
Good review boss... Shan... the problem is they will force us to watch these nepotistic kids like Suhana by casting them over and over agin ... and eventually logon ko aadat pad jayegi yaar... it is sooo sad. Aur eventually they will end up in the cringeworthy Koffee with Karan show and ..... makes me want to throw up ...
To be very honest, people should not totally hate them because they are from film families, who wouldn't want to utilise if they get such a huge platform deserving or not... I saw Archies and everyone for their first film did a decent job I liked everyone the lead Agastya and Khushi also did a good job, the only cringe for me throughout the film was Suhana, I mean her expressions, her voice the way she delivered, everything was for some reason cringey... Only for her, I wanna say, if she isn't SRKs daughter, no one could have offered anything with that acting she did.
Don't worry they can only get away with few of this shit shows and their careers won't take off after that... The only sad thing will be this few shit shows could be seen as opportunity for a few lucky talented ones where this was just handed to this people
I grew up reading archies. All the kids in there except veronica and reggie were from middle class families. The eating joint was a small place near their school and homes. Could have been very easy to make this adaptation and keep it indian. However, I don't think that was the objective :D
Dude, People speak in English in Mumbai but that doesn't mean they have to portray same in Movies too...result of disaster has to be given to the director of the movie.
I actually started watching this film thinking it'll be a mystery or thriller or something on those lines. That was my impression of Archies. But what was that story? Like really? I'll watch TAPPU SENA any day over whatever you call this.
