"But finally it is work that you have to deliver and work that mostly goes over hundreds and hundreds of sketches and hundreds and hundreds of tries. Believing that inside each one of us, yourself, myself every person you see, even the most modest person with whom you have to deal, there is a source and this source can deliver quality and can deliver or never will stop to deliver so far as you don't stop working for it." WOW. This carries over into and craft. Don't be discouraged - keep going.

i was first introduced to the works of Calatrava while i was working on a grad school project of a twisting building with an atrium. It was really another dimension of thought process while working on something like that. For sure his mind is so dynamic.

He is a truly corrupt person, check the disaster-the slippery bridge in Bilbao, the flood-prone opera house in Valencia, the over-budget bridges in the Netherlands. And of course, a huge egomaniac, check what he did in Oviedo. Not proud of this assh**e

@@enriquemunizdominguez5584 I totally agree. He's a great smokeseller, basically. Most of his works are enormous and useless structures which not only come with overcosts, but also most of the times with serious structural issues which ridiculously rise the maintanance operations and cost, and the viability of keeping the construction maintained or even just tear it down.

The future as you rightly sai is greem, his masterpieces are not future at all not only because the do not watch at the context around or the material. Go on and never stop at one point, become a better architect, use his work as fuel to do astonishing things inspired by someone who didn't know very much how to do those things properly. Best luck

Sure he inspires me yet but there's a giant web of resources everywhere about styles and examples... green is fine but somehow I wouldn't like to see it in every single area of a building. Balance is what we need. Anyways my mind right now is with robotic and space engineering.

For years I have been a fan of Calatrava. What a great man. A true artist. One of the great minds of our time. Visited his work in Valencia several times. Also the Liege train station, Lisbon train station, works in Barcelona and Zurich. Not only the architecture is great. The painting of the bulls inside Palau Reina Sofia or the details like the doorknobs. Impressive work. A shame the Montjuic tower and Bac de Roda bridge in Barcelona are in decline.

I like his work. What I don't like is when things go wrong and that's when domes started to have leaks, ceramic falling from the roofs or bad planning choosing materials like the bridge in Bilbao with glass flooring in a city that rains constantly, well ,maybe he had a master plan and invested in hip prosthetic replacements... Or forgetting to make and access to wheel chairs in the one from Venize..

Agreed, But I also think that's what happens when you try and produce something unconventional. Anyone can design a concrete box and have all of the problems you have mentioned be completely eliminated, but then whats the point? Also, as more complex geometries get introduced into building projects the better we'll get at dealing with the problems that arise out of it. Takes time to create something beautiful.

When architecture became sculpture, the wrong way. When the architect designs forms before functions, the same forms, again, again and again. Come to Venice, try the aesthetic experience of tumbling down from the artistic glass bridge, "drawn" by the great architect, with only form in mind, it's the best way for learning what architecture is, and what it's not.

Calatrava was one of the first contemporary architects to revive the “expressive modern” style of Saarinen and Oscar Niemeyer. While others continued to rework brutalist modern Calatrava explored fluid and playful forms. He’s made important contributions that have enriched the appeal and emotional element of design.

The thing is we need both in our cities. We need both buildings that are strictly pragmatic to follow their own function but we also need buildings that are making a statement for example using a visual expression. It’s in order to represent how progressive or modern the city is. It brings more business, it brings more tourism, it gives more diversity. Some buildings need to be romantic, some not. Cities, and we, need both in order to live in a attractive surrounding.

One of the most hated architects in Spain, mainly because of some polemics he've had. I study in the same Architecture School as he did, and there is no any recognition of his work, even teachers incite you to hate him. We live in a country that envy is beyond a lot of people, and this can be a reason, but don't worry Santiago, me and a lot of people really appreciate your unique work.

At a great cost. I was at Oviedo recently, and I felt so bad when I saw what he'd done to the city centre. I didn't have to take a second look at that horrendous building to be sure it was Calatrava work. I love brutalism, and even Calatrava's style tbh, but the way he often works, designs and delivers putes him as a jerk, an encandilator of politicians who seek to gain popularity at the people's cost, whose situation he takes advantage of by rising costs in manners which result, at best, meaningless, if not just cause the entire unviability of his construction.

Granted some of the structures are very pretty to look at, unfortunately, I think he's one of those 'style over substance' architects. Is another sexy object essential? I ran out of time to explain in full here, but those who get it will understand what I mean. Just like Zaha Hadid, they fetishize certain looks (in these cases, curves and spine-like shapes), and just mindlessly replicating those looks for every structure, regardless of the native landscape and culture, function in question, longetivity (physical, visual and spatial), and most importantly, meaningfulness.

A brilliant artist I'm sure but only a mediocre architect in my opinion. His work is too one dimensional, a true architect can marry sculptural beauty with structural efficiency, programmatic logic, environmental sustainability, material suitability, etc. I don't begrudge him doing his work, it's beautiful, but would-be architects are misled when they see his work and think it is good architecture, it is only good art, architecture must be more.
