I'm one of those who would like Sam to sing like before. But you have to understand something. He is a human being, not a robot, and this style of music begins to take its toll on your body and voice after so many years of shows, albums, tours, etc. Besides trying to market their music more these days one of the other reasons they do it is trying to find more comfort for Sam's voice. We already had enough of him in his best days of pure metalcore, now they give us what they can trying to sound like Architects, let's be realHe is one of the few who has managed to keep that raspy scream super high with those notes for so many years.
100% agree. What's important to me now is that they've immortalized the insane things he did during his prime. We can always go back to it.

All I can say is that when he sang back in May in Boston his voice was on point so he is 100% tired. Hopefully he takes care of himself and they get to rest for a bit.
Here's my 2 cents as a vocal nerd: 1. Their music in general is really tough to perform - it can be done safely with good technique, but it's a HEAVY workout. 2. Voices can change over time. It's been almost 8 years since All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us. That's more time than there was between Hollow Crown and All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us. 3. They play hourlong sets - when I saw them in Munich they played 25 songs. That's hard for vocalists and nearly impossible if you're going 100% on every show. If you wanna go 100%, you need more rest days or shorter sets. That might also be why the Royal Albert Hall sessions were so amazing - because he didn't have to perform the next day so he could just go all out. TL, DR: Not going 100% on every song, every night and adapting as your voice naturally changes is a healthy choice, if you wanna maintain a workable voice as a performer. (Also Josh was elite on guitar and backing vocals sicne he is an experienced frontman himself. Of course it's gonna be tough to fill those shoes.)
I kinda share your opinion on that. From what I've heard over the past years, Sam has some difficulties with some types of vocals (mainly the old ones) but the way he adapts and find new techniques and hit different notes, sometimes even more difficult, is fascinating to me
I love how you called Josh an Elite guitarist, cause he is, and so Tom was. That makes me think of the signature Architects kinda used to have and that’s the complex guitar work. A job only Elite guitarists like Tom and Josh could get done. I guess the band’s going to remain with that position empty.
@@alejandrorohen they have to invite some music genius at least on the album sessions. Someone super-creative like Jon Deiley from Northlane, because what they need is to re-establish themselves.
@@nosferhatu Phil Bozeman doesn't do the kind of pitched screams Sam does though. Phil's obviously incredible. His style of screaming is just mechanically different, because it rarely relies on a sung pitch being produced by the true vocal folds as much as Sam's vocal do.
Holy fuck what an awful set list. I so wish they’d just started a new band with a new name after holy hell. Fair enough to them for cracking on and trying something new but it’s just not architects.
The only moment I enjoyed from this shitty live performance. I'm an Architects fan since 2010 but this live is horrible. Sam vocals are so weak, sound recording is bad, stage presence is lame ... I know people are touring a lot and everyone can be tired some day ... I hope they will put better live show in the future
I fucking love this band and Sam is an amazing vocalist, always thought that. I started listening to them in 2018 right before holy hell dropped which in my opinion is one of the best metalcore albums I’ve ever heard. Sadly I couldn’t see them back then because I was too young (16) so I saw them for the first time last year on their Germany tour. Show was amazing, crowd was amazing, everything was on point. But now? Sounds like they need some time off. Don’t get me wrong, I also love their newer stuff but holy fuck back in 2019 I couldn’t believe what kind of sounds and screams sam could do, it was crazy as hell. Please get some rest, you guys really deserve it!
I can even recommend you to watch the newer show at Berlin in 2023. Despite Sam's vocals in 2018-2019 was really sick, in this show he was literally perfect: heavy distortion on screams and stable cleans. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KTEF3ogef8w.htmlsi=le7snOtVBJNOEEsC
Holy Hell was their last absolute belter album in my opinion. Man, that 3 album mid discography run of Lost forever // lost together, All our gods and Holy hell is GOAT’d.
@@georgebrett1738 agreed. But, you now, my first album to listen was FTTWTE. I listened to Tom trilogy only after that in the beginning of 2022, and then I listened to their whole discography without first two albums. So now, after countless listens of all their stuff I still surely say that FTTWE was really good continuing of Holy Hell, despite changing a genre and changing a sound it has really interesting ideas and elements that we could already see on Holy Hell. Discourse is Dead was even written in the HH era
I was at Tom's last show in Nuremberg. I've also seen them dozens of times live. I completely agree with what you say. Tom was the one who set the creative direction for the band. He had amazing ideas and the ability to bring them to life. He was the one who created “Architects tone” and brought 6th string Mayonaise to the table. He was the foundation, the basement for the band! Josh became a solid replacement. He was able to finish Tom's trilogy and bring some interesting ideas to the new albums. However, despite being one of the best guitarists on the technical side of things, Josh failed to create a new direction for Architects, and that's when he left. What can I say, after Josh's departure Architects completely lost the quality side of the band. The riffs are half-finished, the live sound is mediocre, and Sam's voice is in bad shape. I don't even know if he cares because in my opinion he doesn't. Architects are really stagnant right now. Maybe Fish's genius can pull them back together, but I doubt it. Architects desperately needs a leader. A good one.
@@Oryyyt Yeah, the very first pit really set the tone. Pretty vicious, I've never really had an issue with falling down / getting knocked over in pits and I it happened 3 times to me during this gig. Not surprised someone got hurt, but glad to hear he's doing okay!
@@dennismaes6319 That sounds like a good time actually. I wouldn't mind a bruise or 2 in an Architects set. But it's nice that they care enough to halt when the fun gets a bit out of hand.
@@dennismaes6319 there was an older women in front of me who didn’t wanna get in the pit so I just pulled her behind me, I don’t remember clearly what happened after her. Just that I ended in the ambulance. I’m glad the woman is okay too, the pit was unexpected that it suddenly grew like that too. Usually I’m a fan of mosh pits too.
As a huge, huge Architects fan... this band is a shadow of it's former self. What is that "screaming"?? What is that setlist? Really sad to see what they've become.
@@inspektorgadget1129 well Sam is getting older, and his screaming style is very demanding. Performing day after day kills his voice if he tries to replicate studio quality
I'm gonna see architects on brutal assault in august and i'm already dissapointed... what the hell is wrong with Sam's vocals and the back vocalist? When he sang in Abbey road or in Royal Albert Hall he was incredible, and it was only 3 years ago, what's going on?
It just seems like he can't handle his screams and mixes here (Hereafter as a great example). Cleans are decent but his new style that has a completely different vibe from the studio version... Nah. Every "bleeding out like a devil in disguise" phrase in Giving Blood ends in Sam dying out of notes. I mean it is a style but why? Why use it here? This style doesn't belong here imo...
I'd disagree, his lows are very basic false chord growl almost everybody can do with minimal practice, his low screams he used to do back in the days sounded much more interesting
People hating on sam's vocals don't get how vocals work :D Live will always be different than studio, and he actually sounds good here, its just that his technique is different that it was once. His higher pitched singing is more comparable to some older metal bands. It's still on point. note wise its pretty good too. maybe it sounds a bit thin, but im pretty sure that also has to do with the recording.. you can't really encapsulate the real feal of a live recording with such a recording, but tbh this is one of the best live performance videos ever
To add to that, the person making the video seems to have gone the distance and actually removed most noise from the crowd, which overlaps some frequencies in the vocal. however that makes the video better so its completely fine
Idk my theory is that he tryied to switch to a different screaming/distortion technique and it didn't go well. Maybe he was brainwashed by some shitty vocal coach that his technique was dangerous though it reallt wasn't.
He talked about having issues a few months ago, my guess is that as he evolved in clean singing he has been struggling with the way he used to scream, he said he is currently working with a coach. He’s been sounding amazing this tour, this wa probably an off day
@@alonehades100 I mean, the screams sound good and all, but his high cleans sound weird, like in Seeing Red, but i do hear a difference in his cleans in general, not bad necessarily.
I've wondered this last year, I'm not sure. He's definitely dying his hair brown though. If he'd had a transplant you'd think his hairline would be further forward, but it's overall looking thicker. Hard to tell.
TLDR for all the vocal people: Back in january Sam told us at the show in Denmark, that he for some months have had Mental issues and breakdowns that has effected he's vocal range and performance to a degree where he dosnt feel confident to perform live. He got a vocal coach to help him and pushes through shows to keep the flame of the band alive.
His screams in this are surprisingly bad. But they have been on tour for a bit, so giving him the benefit of the doubt. I know when I saw em here in Myrtle Beach they were 10x over better couple months back. Almost sounds like he didn’t warm up his highs?
@@Rednax_Official I agree, I've been to two concerts in the last 12 months and his voice is much better live than in many RU-vid videos. I have no idea why that is
Can't miss the turning point vocal notes at 30:15 , perfect pitch! Must had some fatigue or else before that obviously . Top10 anyways since Qc City show at l'agitée. Such a small venue looking back. Greatest HC breakdown ever at These Colours Don't Run, everyone went apeshit ahaha RIP
nothing wrong with the performance or vocals. It's a live show, it's never gonna be perfect, also these outdoor festival videos always sound like this with the mix all over the place
Gneuu gneuuu gneuuu, The performance is very good, it's just that it's made to make it's way through a sound system that is not what we have at home. Same for letting the audience sing it is unpleasant only for those who listen out of context. Go propose something else or better, and come back afterward
@@Dysilik no way this is the cope; how is the only time people are blaming the sound system is when the actual performance blows, while there are so many amazing soundboard performances, even Architects pre-covid were amazingly mixed and all that my thing is that sam sounds straight up bad on the highs for a long while now, and them touring ts still doesn’t let him either address anything, or even rest. i saw them a ton of times pre-, and like twice post- covid, and there was a noticeable change between the vocals, 2019 Sam was probably the biggest force of nature I’ve ever heard, but this isn’t it dude
Vocal processor. Corrects pitch in real time. You can set the speed / percentage of voice correction manually. That’s how it sounds if you use it on screams as well and not just on clean vocals. Nobody is talking about it and it’s hilarious. He is a great singer, but his sound technicians shouldn’t encourage real time pitch correction for screams, it will always sound weird due to their baggage of harmonics. They “should” use it only on clean singing and set it with a bit less speed / pitch correction …he occasionally sounds like “travis scott” which for sure is not the sound they’re aiming for when it comes to an Architects live performance (vocally).
Sam used to be one of the best allround singers but this sounds terrible. Clean singing covered in auto-tune and multiple vocal layers. No mid screaming and just terrible highs. They really need to take break and let him fully recover. I'm gonna see them at a festival in a few days and not looking forward at this point 🫤
Oh god, they should just really take a break... At this point, it´s just sad. Avoiding all the screams, all the harder songs, pointing the mic towards the audience half of the gig, walking around as if someone forces you to be there. I love their music, even their newer pieces, understand the evolution and am really happy that he, hopefully, feels better mentally, but at the moment, I´m not so sure they are worth seeing live (saying this as someone who saw them some months ago).
Do you think is because of the touring musicians, cause I think someone else is playing drums? I think also the guitarist are touring musicians, but I don’t get the same vibe like the other concerts
It’s sad to see, I saw them in 2017 in a small theatre and they were one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen. Sam Carter even came out and did security for Stray from the Path because the security guards gave up and we’re letting kids crowd surf over the barrier and land on their backs
I saw them in Chicago in May and he was way more into it and sounded so much better. Love sam, but I think they need to get him a vocal coach or a new one
Sam carter Aka- Oliver from bmth rip off, kpop bts member and modern day lesbian popstar! Congrats guys youre now woke.... round of applause 👏👏👏👏👏❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍 cant wait for you guys next album when you become hip hop rapper wannabes 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Sam is killing it and singing for his life, is it perfect ? Of course not, nobody is, but that's the beauty of performing live. Other people put that shit on tracks and call it a day. Nothing but respect for these guys.
Sounds great in my opinion, it's not easy to put your voice through what he does every night and to be pulling off screaming and singing for an hour , voices change with age also
There are a LOT of comments about Sam's vocals. I will happily jump in to defend him. They've been touring a lot, newer stuff goes back to the heavier vocals, but I don't think this is the issue. Sam has guested on some killer live stuff throughout 2023 and 2024 and nailed it every time (Spiritbox Yellow Jacket being a good example) To me he just sounds tired and like he's over done it. I also felt like his cleans were stronger than years ago. My only wish is that Metal bands stop using autotune live. Architects, Bad Omens (all the fucking time) - Please just perform live...
Sam is an elite vocalist for a decade. Not that much can stands tall aside, but time flows, voice changes, get tired, could possibly be modified, plus if you're keep challenging it over and over like he did. Hard to admit his performance is very poor right there. But I do trust deeply in Jordan Fish. He actually transformed a trash shit singer like Oliver Sykes into a great one, adapting production, learning him how to warm up and rest daily. Sam will be back at his peak soon, trust the process
Their sound has changed a fair bit but, I still love them. Too much negativity out there now. It’s a reflection of life stages. They can’t keep making the same album. Spread love for the good ones ❤

Im always sad about they dont play these colours dont run :/ that one started me in this kind of Metal + safed my life through a hard time.
Going the BMTH way I see. I understand, Vocalcords, Change in People, Life, Money, a lot but wow, this just ain't for me anymore. I saw them quite a bite through the 2010's and the last Time I think pre-covid, 2019 ? I think. That was already, not what I remembered but I don't know, some classics at least, this is, just, might as well call it Safeitechts. Good for them tho.
The highs sounded like he needs a breather, the cleans and lows sounded banging. The crowd, and subsequent high placing on festivals shows its not RIP though.
Not sure if it's true, but he sounded this awful in another festival and I saw many people saying it was because of the shittty mix, but maybe they were just making excuses for their favourite band. Anyway, Sam really needs to get his hair stylist fired
Seems like they are following bmth path. I mean: High note helped as jordan fish used to do Scream parts replaced with high vocals But the first track, with that chorus, too similar to bmth
Some metal singers just dont know how to properly scream and blow their chords. Chino from Deftones perfect example. The correct technique will save your vocals.
I think this would be amazing!! However my only complaint is that they played nothing from LF//LT… best album imo! But this still smacked, would love to see them live!🖤 he does sound like Bryan Garris from Knocked Loose when he does his highs.. not a bad thing lol
Don't know about the comment on Sam's voice, for me it was grateful! Just love this show, hope someday they will come to Brazil, then I can be there in person!
Why everyone is explaining that it was only this show that his voice sounded crap. I have been checking their live show videos and his sound has been going downhill like a year already. Sam knows it himself also, because they aren't playing any old songs anymore really.
Their show in Antwerp was better in my opinion. It was a shame they were on the same slot with Brutus.... but looking at the video and since I went to their show in Antwerp, I'm glad I saw Brutus
His clean singing still sounds amazing, as do his new lows. Just his highs sound a bit worn out in this concert, 20 years of screaming your lungs out will do that - very few vocalists have that much logevity
its possible that they are either particularly challenging for Sam to hit nowadays...... or perhaps they're tired of playing them.... maybe they only pick songs from their library that are both fan favs and Sam can still hit decently. I dont think he could pulloff Nihilist now, but a song like Doomsday is easier for him to still hit. could be a bunch of different things im only speculating.
His cleans are amazing and all those sorts of screaming, I don't know what you guys talk about, it seems like we have a lot of vocal coaches in the comments, you giys have no idea what you're talking about
Yikes i love this band but he needs to take a break or re learn how to scream in a healthier way. Ive been screaming everyday for 9 years and this is very very unhealthy sounding
For all of those has an a bad opinion about sam`s vocals. The voice isnt a piece of wood is a instrument full of muscle and soft tissue not the same every time he sing for logic reason ,fatigue, sickness, bad mood and a large etc. the same when you go to the gym the body not always respond the same way. sam in a overall perfomance is a beast since 20 years. learn to relax and joy.
